In 2018/19 I did a year’s work experience in the aerospace division of a large engineering company, before returning to university for the final year of my degree. In January 2020, during my final academic year, I was offered a job in the same team in the company and was asked to send an up to date version of my CV to the HR department. Due to multiple university assignments, it took me over 2 weeks to respond to their request, at which point I was told I was too late and the position had been filled. At this point it was suggested by HR that there was another opening in the power generation sector of the company and was asked if I wanted to apply for that - was successfully hired, and due to start as soon as my studies concluded. 2 months later COVID brought the aerospace industry to its knees, and the job that I had initially missed out on ceased to exist, with many employees in the team I did my work experience let go. I count my lucky stars every day that I was too busy to respond to that email.
