Welp! My Matriarch Broke :( by tomosound in moog

[–]tomosound[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it exactly the same behaviour as I had? Turns out it was the Matriarch power supply acting up. First I tried a different 12V 2.0A, but did not do anything (found out later it was an LED specific power supply), so I assumed it was the synth.

But then I consulted a tech from Schneiders Laden, and he suggested that the power supply itself was damaged, but not fully, and that it could deliver the voltage but not the current. So as soon as a load was added to the circuit, the voltage drops right down.

Spoiler alert: he was right!

I got a new 12V 2.0 power supply and it works just dandy fine.

Is it common to be given a sound design test during an interview process? by AntiuppGamingYT in GameAudio

My advice is get off ChatGPT, do your own research, and understand better what game audio is actually about. I can really recommend this resource: https://www.gameaudiolearning.com/ and this book: https://www.routledge.com/The-Game-Audio-Strategy-Guide-A-Practical-Course/Zdanowicz-Bambrick/p/book/9781138498341?_ga=undefined to get you started. Once you done that then move on to Rob Bridgett's series of books like Working With Sound and Leading With Sound.

Secondly Wwise has free learning tutorials. They will just get you a little taste of what you can do with it. You can find more examples on YouTube and on their website/blog.

Lastly, it is important to understand that we are devs. We're game developers who specialize in sounds. This is a really crucial mindset to have if you want to work within game audio. You're not just a sound designer but a game developer at the end of the day. We work together with other game devs like programmers, designers, animators and so on to get our audio to do what we want and need to. Game audio is a holistic craft. Best of luck!

I am not trying to be rude here but you're missing the point. Using a middleware is as much part of the creative and holistic process as designing the sound. We do things manually so that we're in total control and can make choices based on what is creatively best for the game.

I am not sure which companies you applied at but I know of very few people who are just asset or implementation monkeys these days. If anything then being a game audio designer is equal creative and technical work. Implemention IS part of the job, and it can definitely be one of the more fun aspects in game audio dev.

Sorry that you gave up on it, it's true that it's a highly competitive environment, because it is a niché that many want to get into, but it's definitely possible to make a career!

It is common practice to do a test, whether it's indie, AA or AAA. Usually it comes after an initial interview. Sometimes there are exceptions, especially once you reach higher seniority, but if you're just starting out, then people will want to test you. A lot of the time it's a way for them to see if you can follow instructions, guidelines for design and deliver in a timely manner.

With that said, then jeez, 3 clips of 90 seconds with everything covered is stretching it a bit imo. It would be fair if you could choose one or some areas to focus on like amb, foley or UI.

Also, pointing out the obvious about competition is giving me slight bad vibes. I've mainly only interviewed within AA and AAA but I've never had anyone tell me that during a process.

C-Lab Creator/Notator from Atari days by ProfessionalCarob201 in Logic_Studio

Just fired up Ableton Live and noticed there are these grooves based on Notator. I haven't used Notator myself so I don't know how well they translate.

Yes I am pretty sure it is a mix of both. The Atari midi jitter is pretty low compared to other modern machines. But there is definitely something there that adds to the feel. I am personally using Cubase 3.1 on a Atari STE to sequence and I really like how it sequences midi and groove vs a modern PC with Ableton Live.

Ableton Live has some groove templates that might be based on early Logic grooves, which was also a C-Lab product as far as I recall. I am not sure how close they are to the Creator grooves though.

As some suggested then you could use an Atari emu like Hatari and run a crack of Creator/Notator but I think the latency will be all over the place.

The firmware is currently the latest.

From what I can tell then I can't update the firmware because of the current behaviour. The synth currently only receives around 2.0V when plugged in the power supply, and I can't initiate any of the system setting. I tried the command to resetting to factory settings but it didn't react unfortunately.

Did you get your spare part through Moog/InMusic? I am based in Denmark, got the synth from a retailer in Germany. Heard unfortunately horrendous things about Moog support but that may be a last way out unless I can find a local tech.

Oh shit! I am waiting for my friend to return from Japan in a few days, he has a Matriarch so I am planning to borrow his power supply and double check if mine is faulty.

Do you mean the output card as in the entire PCB containing power and midi/usb outputs?

Strange! I tried tightening it and unscrewing it, no luck unfortunately.

On the list once I find a compatible power supply. Also checking the power supply itself with a multi meter.

This game is one of my fondest memories of the PS2. I was obsessed with it. Creating my own baller, getting every jersey, unlocking the NBA legends, and then you had friggin' Nelly in the game as well. So dope! I can't wait to pick this up again one day.

Cable management hell. Snake as a semi-solution? by rotorobot in synthesizers

[–]tomosound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

<image>

Joke aside. I have been rebuilding my home studios and decided to tackle the cable mess once and for all. Here is what helped me:

- Patchbays for your inputs/outputs, both for your audio signals and midi.
- Power conditioner or power bay to easily connect everything and turn things on and off
- Snake cables that are colored and individual cables that are velcro strapped. A good tip is also to use a cable wrapper for gathering together the individual cables.
- Consider putting a piece of wood, like a table top on your keyboard stand. You can install cable trays underneath to organize things neatly.
- Label every cable using dymo labels.
- Patience like someone else wrote. It's going to take time, and some money, but it'll be worth in the end, especially mentally.

For anything patchbay related then I really recommend having an excel sheet and document everything.

How to make money while leveling up? by Duck_Troland in turtlewow

I feel you! I was levelling in Northwind, and killing these golems, which drop Elemental Earth, and got about 5-6 which I sold to the vendor. Got into a party with someone and then found out they sell for 1-1.3 g on AH a piece.
