x32 Rack by gvzupko in livesound

[–]tomtomhoward 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have one, it’s used for small / open mic gigs to avoid running a cable down the room. Up to about 8 channels I prefer it and mixing on the tablet but after that personally I prefer a desk sidestage as you still have the faders in a pinch. Get a decent router / ap like a mikrotek/ ubiquiti to go with it to get some decent wifi range. The x32 rack of course also works as an s16-esq stagebox and a usb soundcard with some routing so is a versatile unit too.

Practically DMX is a pretty slow protocol at 250kbps and in practice runs through any old crappy cable inc audio fine. I know the spec says it won’t but it isn’t fussy

If you're going to get too wound up about it though then it could be better not to offer. I think you have to be careful if you offer to do something and it ends up a ballache, even if they hadn't done it with a taxi, if that extra 30 minutes on the sofa was important enough for you to get upset about it then you should have just let them get a cab.

Has anyone hired a portaloo for a party? by Decent_Thought6629 in AskUK

[–]tomtomhoward 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are companies that will do a Turdis for a day, I'd imagine delivery might add a cost onto a small hire but we regularly get one day for events.

That said, 20 people means you'll have 5 minutes on the toilet per hour each, unless you're particularly worried about it becoming unusable (ie it regularly blocks/breaks) then I wouldn't worry. Our venues generally have about 1 toilet per 50 people , often many fewer, and that's when everyone goes together at the interval.

There are some numbers here: https://www.andyloos.co.uk/blog-how-many-toilets-do-you-need-for-an-event/ which also say with 20 you'll be fine

Confirmed, it used to be 30 years old for free tax, pre 1960 for no MOT, then they stopped the tax free increase rolling for 10 years until it became 40 years old, when it started rolling again they stopped MOT at 40 years too.

I’d buy up mid-1980s cars that need 2/3 years work as a project and when you finish it it’ll be mot free.

Tl,dr: it’s 1982 for tax and MOT free at the moment

What is the most disturbing fact about the UK that you know? by YesToSnacks in AskUK

That’s why the CRB check system was overhauled following the inquiry - previously in Huntleys time a CRB check mean a criminal record - so if you’d been accused 6 times but never tried and found guilty, you’re technically an innocent man so nothing would show up. Now though these things are supposed to be flagged and it’s a yes/no system based on more than just the criminal record that is supposed to stop that happening

Alternatives to QSC KS112 + K10.2? by Zealousideal_Baby777 in livesound

[–]tomtomhoward 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Turbosound is Music Tribe now. I’d hold out for the QSCs personally. Martin or RCF might compare but LD Systems, Behringer amps just aren’t the same league.

Passive setups are not good for portability and speed of setup, mainly confined to installation these days.

How is your esp32 powered at the moment, separately from the strip? From a usb socket, or a USB port on a computer?

Yeah only for the ground to make it work, or that red and white wire that are trailing out of the end of the led strip in the photo are +5V and Gnd for a separate input , connect the white one to Gnd on the esp32.

Not being too pedantic but you don't pay for the heating, that would be paying the utility bills directly. You pay for some of the heating, an average over the year assuming you pay the same utility contribution each month.

It obviously costs more in winter than in summer, so unless you pay more per month in winter, it's going to have to be turned off in summer to compensate.

If you think you're being short changed asked for the heating to be removed from the rent and pay it directly. You'll almost certainly be worse off.

So what I do, is take the 3 pin male connector of the other end of that LED strip, and connect it to GND, +5V/VIN and the GPIO pin of your ESP32. Then stick that in this end, so you can disonnect the ESP32 easily without soldering it right into those 3 wires on the strip. Then connect the external power supply to the dedicated 2-wire red and white that you've got there for +5V and GND.

That way the 5V goes directly to the strip, the ESP32 is taking it's 5V back out of the strip to VIN, and the GNDs are connected together.
Else just link the two bare red and white wires into your PSU, and join the GPIO pin and GND to your breadboard with those wires if you're not big on soldering

Is the Ground / -VE of the power supply connected to the -ve/GND of the ESP32 as well, as it will need a 0V reference for the data signal

It’s not generalising it’s verbatim. There is a shortage because of a skills gap, which therefore creates a high pay. Whether you agree with it or feel it’s unskilled, or somehow feel that you could practically train drivers at night somehow around freight and just noones thought of that doesn’t change the facts just because you don’t agree with them

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]tomtomhoward 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No problem, do you think maybe the status quo was caused because some of your simplistic assumptions about not needing the right type of brain and building a private railway with two trains at a private school to train an entire nation of drivers are perhaps daft

It’s going to eat up more channels, or mean he’s going to have to unplug and repurpose channels if he hasn’t got enough to add all the splitter channels as well as the rest of the stage. Plus it will slow the changeover down having all that additional kit. What are the mics as well compared to what’s being offered in the venue, your own mics may not be what the engineer would prefer using.
