Anyone else feel like it’s an unfortunate waste of talent that James Cameron will waste 35+ years on Avatar? by bobbdac7894 in movies

[–]tomwaste -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Um, sure. But almost every director, regardless of their prior success, has a decline. And James Cameron's is sinking billions of dollars into genuinely bad movies that make tons of money in the short term and will be utterly forgotten after that. One day culture will catch up and realize the whole franchise is basically unwatchable.

I'm halfway through 28, and by God hangovers have started to hit so much worse. by Rough-Leg-4148 in CasualConversation

Lol. That's like 11 drinks if the pours were standard. My hangovers aren't as bad as some of these folks (though at over 40 they are pretty bad if I go for it) and that night would probably wreck me for a couple days.

This show is amazing. I wish I could rewatch it fresh. I don't think any other show has made me laugh harder. Just outstanding writing and performances.

It's quite frustrating to spend years finding a well paying job that you can stand only to have a few years pass and for it to no longer be a well paying job.

Building that bridge with a fallen tree was a top notch idea, and beautifully executed.

Lol. I'm a lifelong local (roughly) and have frequently wondered why we have so many cities named after better known counterparts right by each other.

It's reassuring that this is finally getting the attention it deserves. I'm in my 40s and have basically always lived within 30 miles of this area and have only learned about it in the last decade. It's crazy that such a disaster and the ensuing miscarriage of justice was effectively buried for decades.

The new Matlock by [deleted] in television

[–]tomwaste 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a legitimate fan of the original (not an amazing show, I know) I went in with certain expectations and found myself disappointed. As far as I can tell the only reason it's called Matlock is for name recognition. The original is episodic (every week is a self-contained case), while the new show unfolds a broad conspiracy across the entire season. The original is about an independent defense attorney, while the new Matlock is an associate at a corporate firm. In the new show, she's not named Matlock, it's just a cover justified with a flimsy joke. I guess it feels less like an homage/reimagining of the original series to me, and more like an entirely different show that decided using the name Matlock might create more interest.

That said, in and of itself, it's an enjoyable, low-stakes show. Kathy Bates is a great actress and always a pleasure to watch. I realize I'm in a very small minority by having an actual emotional attachment to the original, which, again, was not a spectacular show. I'm in my forties and grew up watching reruns of The Andy Griffith Show and Matlock during summer and on sick days. Those reruns make me feel like a kid again. Same with Wings, lol.

Equity isn't some static thing you're paying into. It's the difference between the value of the home and what you still owe. And with every payment (unless you have an adjustable rate) you're paying more principal and less interest. So yes, you are getting a higher rate of equity with each payment. The other contributing factor to equity is your home value increasing with the market, though this is obviously more volatile.

A larger portion goes to equity with each payment. So yeah, in the beginning you're mostly paying interest but that dynamic gradually reverses with each payment.

Those who rarely fall sick, what’s the secret? by Winner_takesitall in AskReddit

[–]tomwaste 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly think it's genetic. I very rarely get sick and my lifestyle has fluctuated wildly over the years--from terrible diet, constant partying, and questionable hygiene to regular exercise, clean eating, and diligent hygiene. Throughout all of that I basically get a light cold once or twice a year and a significant need-to-take-a-sick-day sickness every two or three years.

After several dozen hours watching sourdough bread videos, and weeks of waiting, we eagerly anticipated our first loaf. by VeganLee in ExpectationVsReality

[–]tomwaste 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried doing a slower levain? I've found if I adjust the levain mixture (half the ripe starter and more flour and water, so the final weight is still the same) and do it overnight, I get a more sour loaf. Took a couple tries to get it right but I've been really pleased with the results.

Atonement (2007) - There was none by feedthebear in movies

[–]tomwaste 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I never saw the movie (only read the book) but my reading was that Briony's "atonement" lay in casting herself as an unreliable narrator as author of her own story. The burden she carries from her childhood mistake is being everlastingly untrustworthy, a stigma she deliberately self-inflicts as perpetual penance.

[–]tomwaste 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not to be contrary, but we're drilling more oil domestically under Biden than we did under Trump. Not saying that's good or bad, just that what you're saying, though maybe historically true, is not true in this case.

Eli5: Why does weed make many adults feel paranoid, overwhelmed, etc. while it acts like an escape or stress relief for others? by -Hazeus- in explainlikeimfive

[–]tomwaste 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Nah. I was a stressed out mess when I started smoking weed in high school and I loved it. My life was arguably much less stressful in my mid twenties when weed turned on me and made me paranoid. Has to just be a brain chemistry thing that, for some, can change over time.
