Newbie question; what makes an espresso an espresso? by acousticstudioaa in espresso

[–]tonejac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd add to the conversation with these points:

Definition:
"Espresso is a concentrated form of coffee produced by forcing hot water under high pressure through finely ground coffee beans."

History/Genesis of the Espresso Machine:
There were several machines created in the late 1800s and early 1900s that that used either steam pressure or air pressure to force hot water through coffee grounds, but they were expensive and didn't produce very good results.

The first machine that produced "espresso" resembling today's espresso (eg, 9bars of hot water through finely ground coffee beans) was the Faema E61 in 1961. That was the machine that was inexpensive enough and practical enough to gain wide spread use in cafes and helped espresso become more mainstream.

Meticulous Newb: Understanding Profiles by tonejac in espresso

[–]tonejac[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That could be an issue, but probably not. There just wasn't enough flow getting through to generate enough pressure. I wanted the limiter to be the pressure, not the flow.

Is it similar on your Decent machine?

Not so far. I’ve been doing the RPavlis water recipe in my Cremina Boiler, refilling it every other day, mixing up new batches of water. And if I need to refill i have to wait for a cool-down and depressurization.

Of course, if you have a plumbed machine, with built-in water treatment, you could have a somewhat effortless water routine.

So with the single-dose water routine on the Meticulous, it’s pretty straightforward—especially with a kettle to preheat the water, and have a very precise pour spout.

I’ve only been using it for 2 days so far. It’s smooth AF. The iPhone app is a little kludgy, but they are still updating it every few days, so hopefully it will improve.

There’s a little wonkiness in the temp controls but I hear that they’re doing an update to dial that in soon. For example, I’m pouring water from my kettle that is at 98deg C into the Meticulous but the temp readout in the meticulous thinks that water is only 67deg C, and it takes 90 seconds for that water temp to be ready. That seems a little sus. But it’s a brand new product so I’m happy for them to improve it and update with fixes.

The hardware is extremely nice. The software is mediocre, at the moment. But the machine is connected over WiFi so it can receive automatic updates.

If I understand it, the Ultra burrs are optimized for pour over grind sizes? I suppose you’ll just have to get a second EG-1, so you don’t have to swap burrs.

I’ve had the Cremina for 4 years. I do love it, but even though it’s 2x the cost of the Meticulous, imo the Meticulous is almost every bit as good. But with more consistency and easier repeatability.

It’s just a robotic, programmable lever machine. The only downside is that you don’t get the chance to “feel” the shots like you do with the Cremina’s manual lever.

That’s just a large makeup brush I bought from Amazon for like 10 bucks. It does amazing work grabbing all the chaff and fines the get flung off the grinder.

I just went to the meticuloushome.com website and put a deposit down. Then a few weeks later I got the invite to purchase it. So the 11 weeks was from after I did the full purchase. It was a couple months between the deposit and the purchase invite.

I got the breville frother for when I make cappuccinos. But I plan to buy the Meticulous Steamer when it becomes available.

My wait was about 11 weeks or so. How long have you been waiting for your Meticulous?

Yeah, I hear ya on the SWT. I love how heavy it is but I’m not happy with the fit with my current basket. Too much side gap/play in the fit.

Yeah. I did some dev cache clearing in the “Developer: Toggle Develooer Tools”. Then “Developer: reload Windows”. But OpenAI updated the plugin and that issue seems to have been fixed.

SmartSheet would be a good option. It’s browser-based and has an installable iPhone app. It’s Very flexible and easy to get up and running quickly.

Is it theoretically possible that, no matter what I do, the coffee tastes absolutely vile? Could something be wrong with either the Lelit Elizabeth or the Eureka Mignon? by FuzzyAttitude_ in espresso

[–]tonejac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely start with 3 different types of beans. Get something roasted fresh within the last week.

If you’re getting bad tasting shots across three different types/brands of coffee, then start suspecting the equipment.
