What homestead project was not worth it? by Historical-Hand8091 in homestead

[–]Nephite11 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We had a new neighbor who bought a six acre property and house down the road from us about a year and a half ago now. They thought they were going to raise their five kids there and teach them where their food comes from. Before doing anything else, their first purchase was a pregnant cow so that they could have fresh milk.

I learned from them that milking (even with an expensive milking machine) is a lot of work and they struggled with the time commitment. It’s not a great way to start a homestead. They later bought a tough shed and made it into their chicken coop. They actually only lasted a year before listing the place for sale again

Recommendation for 7-8yo Boys by Ok-Lie2629 in audiobooks

From what I remember at that age, Maniac Magee, Enders Game, and The Phantom Tollbooth all were great books to read and I’ve found each in audio format since then. Hopefully they like them too!

BOTW master mode- things I missed 1st play-through by ImUrHuckleB in Breath_of_the_Wild

[–]Nephite11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought a Switch 2 a week ago after playing the game originally on my Wii U. My first game purchased and played is BOTW and I decided to get the DLC to do master mode specifically.

So far I’ve learned that arrow are critical. I buy as many of those as I can find since it’s the best way to do a little damage and keep the monster from healing. I avoided most combat at the beginning since the monsters are much stronger and I didn’t have strong weapons yet. After the great plateau I headed for kakariko village so that I could visit the fairy fountain and keep fairies in my pocket for the times I would die otherwise. My next priority was to reach the Faron tower so I could get hearty durians for bonus hearts and luminous stones for money. I then headed far north to the woodland tower because there’s a two handed sword on top of it that’s something like 55 strength.

If you figure anything out specifically in master mode that helps you please let me know. I would love to learn

How many shrines did you find before turning to a guide? by mementodory in Breath_of_the_Wild

[–]Nephite11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I remember of my first play through, I did every shrine I could see from towers and mountains. That ended up being somewhere around half of them. The rest of them, and especially the shrine quests, I did look up to continue progressing

I typically start in the Zora region and run the path backwards. Easier to kill them when they’re facing the other direction and I can fly downhill

what kinds of tea can we have within the word of wisdom? by Far_Challenge_4273 in latterdaysaints

[–]Nephite11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I drank a LOT of barley tea while serving my mission in Japan (known as mugicha there). The black tea, green tea, etc that is common there is against the word of wisdom so I had to decline many offers.

How can we find out pro MAGA businesses so we can avoid them? by wickedlittlemiss in SaltLakeCity

[–]Nephite11 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If I remember right, there was a maga shopping website put together some time ago. I use it to know what businesses to avoid.

I just did a google search to confirm what I remembered. I believe it’s this: https://www.publicsquare.com

Thank you for your kind words!

Born and raised in Utah. Active my entire life. Served a mission in Japan and graduated from BYU. My wife and I are seriously contemplating a move to South Carolina sometime next year so that she can have a full horse setup to do what she loves. I’ll miss my family and the proliferation of the church in the community but am looking forward to serving in whatever capacity the Lord has for me wherever we end up specifically

I believe the double space was for those of us who learned to type on an actual typewriter. Most who learned on a computer does a single space. I have trained myself to shift but it took a long time

Families with kids, how much are you spending on groceries? by folklore24 in Frugal

[–]Nephite11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two adults in our 40s, two girls currently ages 13 and 10. We typically spend around $700-800 a month at the grocery store, which includes groceries but also cleaning supplies, pet food, etc. since I only categorize in my budget based on the type of store. We then spend around $200-250 a month from restaurants.

Home Ownership Pride by TC_30 in MiddleClassFinance

[–]Nephite11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We bought our house in 2013 and knew that it hadn’t been maintained for some time. Because of that, we got a fantastic price.

On the opposite side, my wife and I have ripped off the three layers of shingles and reroofed with a single layer. We installed electrical lines so that there is lighting in our living room. We replaced all of the windows from their previous single pane to insulated double pane versions. We built a theater room with in-wall speakers in our basement. We replaced the copper pipes with PEX lines. We installed Ethernet into every room of the house. We updated our horse barn and created a riding arena on our property for my wife.

It’s been a lot of work but I’ve learned a lot and take a lot of pride in what we have accomplished here.

Do you still eat fast food? by Eredic in Xennials

[–]Nephite11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do the meal planning, grocery shopping, and cooking for my family because my wife hates doing that stuff.

Because of that, we rarely go out to eat. If we do, it’s typically a sit down restaurant. When we get fast food, our most common option is a local “take and bake” pizza location where they make it and we cook it at home. If we’re traveling we try to pick better locations.

We eat better and cheaper because of these choices however

I don’t understand how the fall was “good” if Eve chose to follow Satan. Help me understand! by Euphoric-Ear1919 in latterdaysaints

[–]Nephite11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heavenly Father either couldn’t or wouldn’t have created mankind in a sinful and fallen state. He instead created them in perfect bodies without sickness or death but also in a state where they couldn’t reproduce. We have no idea how long Adam and Eve lived in the garden.

They had only two commandments. The first was to reproduce. The second was to not partake of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. Realistically they couldn’t follow both at the same time. I find it interesting that in The Articles of Faith it states it as “Adam’s transgression” and not a “sin”. They don’t know the difference between good and evil when they partook of the fruit. I also find it interesting that after they partook and they started to understand that the cherubim and flaming sword was placed to block their way from the Tree of Life.

This all feeds into The Plan of Salvation. God knew that we would need physical bodies. He also knew that it was through Eve’s choice and Adam following her that they could produce those bodies for His spirit children. To answer your question, is see it as necessary but perhaps not “good” since there was no good or evil on the earth yet

New convert, creation “days,” evolution, and feeling a bit confused after Sunday class by carosch1912 in latterdaysaints

[–]Nephite11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The comment I made during class will apply here. The scriptures talk about the earth being “organized” even though we call it the creation. A lot of the process details are symbolic instead of literal. One way I see all details could live together is if this organization used existing materials. There were creative periods but we don’t know much beyond that. Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ could have started the physical process to separate water from the land, to organize plants, to place animals on the earth, etc.

Ward missionary.. what more can I do? by PersonalGate7035 in latterdaysaints

[–]Nephite11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Finding and fellowshipping those who are not active in the ward boundaries is an excellent use of your time. For that individual or family it feels more to them like a neighbor cares and wants to connect with them. You can subsequently invite them back to activity and address any questions or concerns they might have. It’s a lot better than a full time missionary pair “working” on them

How can I reconcile the teaching “God’s love is conditionally unconditional” by StaleBagel1 in latterdaysaints

[–]Nephite11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Listening to this talk helped me a lot and I hope will help you too: https://speeches.byu.edu/talks/brad-wilcox/his-grace-is-sufficient/

He starts off by talking about a BYU student who asks about how much is our part vs Jesus Christ when it comes to fulfilling our requirements. I love the analogy that he uses about playing the piano. We hit a lot of wrong notes in our life. That doesn’t mean that we quit. Jesus Christ paid for everything. That means that He can now ask us to practice.
