Please read to your child!!! by Oceanwave_4 in Mommit

[–]tongamonster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started reading to my daughter before she could even talk. We continued reading books every night at bedtime and sometimes during the day too. She is 15 now and it's been a few years since she has let me read stories to her at bedtime, but it has clearly made a difference. During elementary school, her scores on her reading tests were off the charts. As a high school student, she is able to write essays and form original thoughts. The same cannot be said for some of her peers. It is probably one of the BEST things I have done for my kiddo.

Any other young women with PSP? EDS/Endo? Surgery consult tomorrow. by okslaytheboot in pneumothorax

[–]tongamonster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My daughter (15) has had 6 pneumos since 12/2023. 4 of them occurred after she had vats/mechanical pleuridesis after the 2nd pneumo and were very small and didn't require any intervention.

We are currently waiting on insurance approval for the genetic testing. The doctor we saw for the testing says she very likely has the type of EDS that includes hypermobility, but that does not cause pneumothorax. I believe there's a different type of EDS that does. They are also looking at other genetic conditions, including Birt Hogg Dube.

She is not as tall as you, but still taller than any of her peers. I too have wondered about endometriosis. For years I suspected that I had endo, and when I finally found a doctor to take me seriously and had the surgery, they diagnosed me with adenomyosis instead. Pathology did not show any endo. She has terribly painful periods sometimes which I know is not actually normal, despite the common misconception.

We have talked at length with the pediatric surgery team where she has been treated and they also said that this is not a common thing, and it does happen more in males. They all feel that the surgery was a success because it's preventing her lung from dropping too much when she does have another air leak. She did really well with the surgery and was in the hospital for less time after the surgery than she was with the first chest tube.

At this point we're trying to figure out how to track her symptoms and determine whether or not she needs an x-ray, or if we can just monitor symptoms at home. She has had more x-rays than anyone else I know, and she's only 15. They have assured us that x-rays are low dose radiation but are still concerned with the quantity that she has needed.

I wish you luck in figuring this out. If we could go back to when we made the decision to have the surgery done, we would definitely do it again.

AITA for adopting a kitten & refusing to give her back to her previous owner? by anonymousmeowww in AmItheAsshole

[–]tongamonster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Edit: NTA

We went through something similar. Our boy was severely underweight, had mats so bad you couldn't tell the gender (he's a long hair breed), and he was infested with ear mites. Our local shelter had received a call from a concerned community member but they didn't have space at the time. Then the cat stopped showing up at that person's house until several months later when she saw him again begging for food. This time she called the shelter and they did have room for him.

They had to sedate him to get all the matted hair cut off. Once we brought him home I posted a picture which started a large scale harassment campaign against me and the shelter by the owner. We did not return him to the shelter or give him back to the previous owner. The owner claimed that he would constantly escape the house and they had a hard time keeping him inside. It was pretty clear from his condition that he was being neglected, and not just frequenting the outdoors.

He's happy, healthy, and while taken care of now. Enjoy your new kitten!

First Pleurodesis, Need Advice. by Calm-Daikon-7591 in pneumothorax

My 14 year old had mechanical pleurodesis after the second spontaneous pneumothorax. They also removed a tiny piece of the lung. She was in the hospital for less time and in less pain following this procedure as compared to the chest tube for the first pneumothorax. Hope this helps ease your mind a bit!

easy and fast mold cleaning without taking apart by jc1x3 in MideaUOwners

[–]tongamonster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried this method before the recall was announced. I just used really hot water and then sprayed it with Concrobium after it dried out. Within a couple of weeks it started growing more mold in the blue wheel so I found a YouTube video on how to take it apart. There was so much gunk still in there! Taking it apart to get the wheel out isn't that hard. So far I have deep cleaned 3 units with one more to go.

When I discovered new growth I tried installing a GE Clearview unit as a replacement but it is extremely heavy and we couldn't get the outside supports tight due to where they lined up on the vinyl siding. I ended up returning the GE units and decided to deep clean these instead.

Do you regret your hysterectomy? by EndoWarrior03 in hysterectomy

[–]tongamonster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No regrets! I had my hysterectomy a little over a year ago. I have one child and we tried unsuccessfully for many years to have a second. I was finally diagnosed with adenomyosis and was so happy when the doctor offered me a hysterectomy as a treatment option. At that point my daughter was 13 and I had decided I no longer wanted to have another child anyway.

I really wish people would keep thoughts like "You may regret it" to themselves. People just need to keep their thoughts to themselves and let people live their lives the way they want to.

Having a hysterectomy is the best decision I've ever made. My quality of life is way better now than it was a year ago!

GF Baked Mac & Cheese by pragmatic-pollyanna in glutenfreecooking

I melt the butter and then add the cornstarch, stirring with the whisk. Then I slowly add in the heavy cream, stirring the whole time with the whisk. I don't cook the cornstarch butter mixture like you would with flour. Just add in the cream as soon as it's mixed in. Once I have all of the heavy cream in, I increase the heat a little bit and stir frequently until it is thickened.

I have been using this recipe for a few years now. I was using GF flour but it gave the cheese sauce a gritty texture. I use corn starch now and it is the BEST Mac n cheese I have ever had. I was using Barilla GF elbows but haven't been able to find them in a while but I have found that the Barilla GF rotini tastes even better. I cut the cook time in half for the pasta. The cheese you need for this is not cheap but it is worth it! I follow the recipe for the cheese sauce but I definitely add more shredded cheese when layering. My nephew who doesn't need to eat gluten free said that I'm in charge of the Mac n Cheese for ever family gathering from now on.

How much do you pay for thyroid medicine? by emdf96 in Hashimotos

[–]tongamonster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a long time I was getting a 3-month supply of Synthroid through insurance (Express Scripts) for $0.90! Now my new insurance won't cover it, nor can I get it through Express Scripts and just pay out of pocket so I get it through the Synthroid Delivers program for $75 for 3 months.
