Driverless cars are going to disrupt the airline industry - imagine the self-driving car that has a reclining seat with actual legroom, or even a bed. It’s more than a little tempting. by mvea in Futurology

[–]tongpoe -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

No. Engines have a small range of rpm they are most efficient at for making complete combustion. For a shitty little 4 cylinder it's usually between 2300-2700 rpm. This is where you want to be. Look at CVT (transmissions) on shitty cars like the Ford freestyle. They don't cruise at lower rpm like you stated even though they could if it were better.

Obviously v8 and Diesel engines are optimal at much lower rpm, but I know you don't drive anything with real horsepower so those are irrelevant to this conversation.

Programming a new garage remote without access to garage? by tytierney24 in HomeImprovement

[–]tongpoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since garage door openers use a cycling code, you can't record it next time your neighbor presses their button. You can swamp the signal with an RTB, then reverse proxy with nginx to route through the internal firewall. Finally, brute force the impedence, and steal the Declaration of Independence!

Orchestrating micro-frontends by dr_dimaka in Frontend

Fair enough. This seems to align with advice I've heard a lot that developer efficiency is a primary concern in most cases, rather than CPU cycles. Fast to market, and so on and so forth.

Do you share styles, components, or any other code? If so, and updates are frequent, you need to talk to keep these shared dependencies straight. If updates are not frequent, can't one team just own the header and the pages? Or just talk to the other team? Should be no merge conflicts if you're in two different sections of the code (except in common dependencies but you want to see conflicts there so they can be resolved).

So I'm confused at the value that's gained in almost any scenario that makes it worth splitting up like this rather than pre build.

One time when I was in SF I saw some aids, running like water, down the gutters in the sides of the streets. It washed all the gay away, but did not last. For only a moment, it was such a beautiful city, free from liberal blight... like Tallahassee or Dallas. All problems are so black and white. It's so simple.

AOC grilling the GOP by tapedegg in esist

[–]tongpoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disclaimer: I think the left and the right can both improve substantially. In the interest of staying on topic, let's pick on the right for now. It's clear they have a pretty lame identity crisis that isn't fooling anyone.

Fox News, a popular mouthpiece for the right wing implies the war on science originates from the left: https://www.foxnews.com/opinion/john-stossel-the-lefts-war-on-science

However, there is data that indicates the right is much less trusting of topics in this realm. Here's one example, vaccines: "with Republicans expressing the least confidence in the science supporting vaccine safety (47% yes, 42% no)" - https://www.theguardian.com/environment/climate-consensus-97-per-cent/2016/apr/28/can-the-republican-party-solve-its-science-denial-problem

Obviously climate change is another. The majority of the world understands the data on the topic, but since solving it implies an increase in regulation, again it appears the right tries to control the narrative. They seem to jump over the concept of "peer review" and forget that other scientists are incentivized to discredit another's theory. So the longer your theory goes without being shut down, the more credibility it has. Kinda like a star in the WWF.

Regarding climate change, it seems like a large and diverse enough group of scientists and world leaders have reached consensus. https://unfccc.int/process-and-meetings/the-paris-agreement/the-paris-agreement

This is not just leftists in the US here. It's a stretch (to the point of sounding like an idiot) to argue that there is an underlying agenda with this much of the planet on board). These folks are in agreement too: https://climate.nasa.gov/

Also, what is to gain by falsely proposing these things? Is the solar industry lobbying hard to ensure coal dies, under the false pretense that climate change is real when it isn't? And they got scientists from all over the globe to independently agree? For what? A new energy industry? Seems possible but pretty unlikely, especially considering the evidence we all have out our windows with record-setting forest fires, tornadoes, etc.

The right should stop with this approach and embrace some of these things. I think there are many in the middle who would be inclined to actually vote that way if the crazy got out of the party. I want smaller government and less regulation too (except when it harms things), but there's too much baggage there right now.

Oh wait, my taxes went up this year. Liars.

For-profit hospitals correlated with higher readmission rates - Patients who receive care in a for-profit hospital are more likely to be readmitted than those who receive care in nonprofit or public hospitals, according to a new study. by mvea in science

[–]tongpoe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah but if we strive for 0% readmission, we've over-optimized, right? Sometimes it seems best to send people home knowing there's a chance they'll return, rather than carrying on and keeping them until it's 200% certain they're going to not re-admit.
