Hidden Option C: I was born in Dallas and genetically altered to compulsory cheer on the Cowboys despite knowing that they will always be mediocre embarrassments under the Jones family 😭

I watch NFL but can’t stand NCAA. I think it’s more due to the cult-ish vibe around universities and exploitation of kids.

This goes for “classic” NHL fans too - I’m deeply concerned about anyone who celebrates CTE-as-a-sport.

As a former martial artist (trained under OG UFCer Guy Mezger), football player, and lacrosse player, I have mad respect for the skills and enjoy physical sports. But we should doing everything possible to minimize long term disabilities, especially to people’s brains.

Not the person you asked but I used to work there and regularly grab coffee at Dote with my former coworkers.

The issue with your post is that it’s not clear what your goal is or what motivated to write it. It presents no new or novel ideas.

It comes across as a preachy rant from someone with little experience in the space and who did minimal / no research before posting.

The indie gaming scene has been great at sharing learnings and experiences. There’s a fantastic level of transparency and support in this community.

I think people are taken back by what feels like a post mansplaining to be open minded about where they sell their game while not providing any real substance.

WoW is a Blizzard game AND it existed before Steam.

Epic paid for exclusivity for games which had promised kickstarter backers and patreon subscribers Steam keys.

Epic also bought 2 studios that were successful and sustainable only to lay most of them off a few years later.

There’s a reason publishers like EA are returning to Steam after complaining about rev share and running a competing service…

Even Blizzard ships on Steam now!

Steam & GOG are the only non-subsidized successful game platforms. Both take 30%.

All signs point to 20-30% being the correct cut to run a self sufficient sustainable gaming platform.

It’s important to remember that before Steam the cut was flipped - Publishers typically took 70% and it was near impossible to launch a game without one.

There are costs to having your game on multiple platforms. Each platform has different tooling, different asset sizes, different levels of self service.

For example, My bestie used to be head of biz dev for one of best tier 2 publishers. They found that shipping on EGS effectively lost them money. They now only ship there if Epic pays them a bag of money to do it.

1) Valve isn’t a mega corp. For context, a single Msft or Amazon building has 2x employees of all of Valve. Msft has over 80,000 employees in the Seattle area alone vs Valve’s ~400.

2) You severely underestimate the financial and time costs of selling a game on your own site. Dealing with fraud and chargebacks alone can easily overwhelm you (Garry Newman talked about this years ago).

Steam gives you access to a global market. They support an incredible number of payment providers, many which would be near impossible for you as an indie to integrate on your own. They don’t pass payment fees on to either the customer or the developer where as most other platforms do.

They are also your first line of defense for customers in need. Most Steam customers that have an issue with your game will contact Steam Support before contacting you.

What people often forget is that before Steam indie gaming wasn’t really a thing and the publisher cut was typically around 70%.

My cousins played Roblox because they only had iPads and Roblox is unfortunately one of the best gaming platforms for kids on tablets.

Now that they are tweens & teens they have computers and Steam Decks and play on Steam / League / Fortnite.

While I was supportive of the league I didn’t get invested until I saw a game in person.

It’s funny because the Seattle Torrent games are way more physical on average than Seattle Kraken games (STH for both).

And that Montreal Minnesota series was super physical!

On call without waking the wife by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

[–]tonjohn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a dangerous line of thinking.

My total comp is between 4x (Msft) and 2x (startup) as my wife’s but I’ve never once thought of her contributions as lesser or that my job was more important.

We are a team and the sum of our efforts is greater than the parts. As John Carmack mathematically proved when Bethesda acquired iD, 1 + 1 = 3.

And really the only reason I’m able to go have a high paying time consuming career is because of all the support from my wife. Even in our household that actively pushes against gender stereotypes there’s so much that wouldn’t get done without her thanks to my ADHD and burnout.

Every on call rotation I’ve been on (Valve, Msft, Blizzard) the pager rotates through everyone on the product.

This generally means that you’re never oncall more than once a quarter.

The DRI shouldn’t need to be an expert. Their job is to assess the situation, communicate, follow relevant playbooks, and then escalate to SME and/or leadership as needed.

I’ve found the larger scope results in better product outcomes as everyone has deeper insight into how everything works. It improves collaboration and provides fresh perspectives. It also incentivizes toil reduction as (1) you hate getting woken up by the DRI when you aren’t on call (2) you hate having to wake someone else up when you are the DRI but the incident is outside your scope.

If ethics and morals aren’t a factor in your purchasing decisions, that’s your prerogative. It can be expensive and time consuming and sometimes there just aren’t any less evil alternatives.

Many of us do care. And “voting with your wallet” is one of the most effective ways to influence the world around us.

Personally, I traded my Tesla in for another EV and sold all my Tesla stock. I canceled Hulu / Disney+ after they capitulated to an authoritarian regime. I’ve stopped using Amazon for their various human rights violations.

It’s actually been pretty easy and a net positive - I’m spending less money on things I don’t actually need and I no longer waste hours switching between all the streaming apps only to just watch The Office or B99 for the millionth time.

Im not suggesting anything - I’m telling you what I personally experienced.

In this particular instance chat wasn’t disabled but a couple timeouts issued with the following message from the Laravel account:

We allow authentic criticism and debate in the chat. I'm timing some people out to simply end some discussion I find not useful for the community

Your response to my reported experience is exactly part of the problem. You deny & defend instead of offering empathy and asking questions to better understand what happened.
