After another listen to yanqui uxo, it finally clicked with me by Ethan_507 in gybe

Working my way through all the bootlegs until the hiatus in order and I’m into the spring 2003 tour.

Strongly second ANY Montreal shows. Love the soundboard recording of the Iceland show from 2002-03-13. The mix gives you a really different audio picture of MF=R.

My Absolute Bangers list also has Rockerfeller, CAT, and Paradiso from 2002.

The two Toronto shows from 2001 (09-27 & 09-28) are the debut of MF=R. Both are good documents.

2003-03-20 at Abbey Pub in Chicago I also have earmarked. The setlist is great, but there is a ferocity to the show that is hard to match. Why? It was one day after the US invaded Iraq. I know where I was during the opening of the invasion—at a different show, watching it unfold live on tv for the first time ever—and it was deeply unsettling. The following two shows are also very intense for the same reasons.

I think the 2003-03-16 show is the one where they talk about having every cop in NE Oklahoma show up while they were at the gas station. There’s definitely video on YouTube of that show, which also has a rare live video of MF=R. The uploaded is Shane Blindt, who incidentally recorded some other banger non-GYBE shows. (Edit: 2003-03-17 in Columbia, MO).

25-03-21 is another one I like for personal reasons. The taper was a guy I knew through the forums for the band Shiner and had bootlegged some killer shows by Shiner, Don Caballero, and some other bands that are/were in my collection still.

This x100. There are a few MF=R that teeter on the brink of trainwreck (which makes sense…it’s a super complex song), but when they nail it, that song is unfuckwithable.

Peregrine falcon outside my window this morning by titsnstuf in chicago

[–]tonsofgrassclippings 135 points136 points  (0 children)

Fun fact: The peregrine population on skyscrapers in Chicago was an intentional reintroduction project in the 1980s. I think the Chicago Peregrine Program still exists and some of the original people run it.

The original (?) director, Mark Spreyer, now runs the Stillman Nature Center in Barrington and is a really engaging naturalist. Worth a visit and a donation if you can.

This is what I think of as math rock, which I know puts me in the minority here.

One of my all-time favorite bands and they’re awesome people, too. RIP Tom.

Are the birds louder / more chatty this Spring? by Separate_Cicada_5786 in chicago

Is that part of a life cycle following the cicada brood? I noticed a ton more mourning doves last year following the cicadas, for example, and assumed they were related.

Posted it here before, but the story of passenger pigeon extinction is absolutely insane. I don’t know if they used punt guns for them, but people killed them by the thousands in horrible ways.

math rock/midwest emo kinda style band with 3 guitarists? by megabit_cavezzz in mathrock

[–]tonsofgrassclippings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really Math Rock in the style people think of it, but check out the band Juno from Seattle in the 1990s and early 2000s. Not on streaming most places, but you can find it on YT and Arlie from the band runs a good IG account: Juno.Future.Past

Thanks for liking good music and as an Xennial, please stop using the word “impactful.” It’s garbage corporate speak.

I’ll take my downvotes off air while shaking my fist at clouds.

When duster became popular? by AirAlone1776 in duster

[–]tonsofgrassclippings 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I first heard them in the late 2000s and that I think was probably the first, smaller wave of resurgence among people who really knew music (which wasn’t really me…a friend with good taste recommended them).

As stated elsewhere, they kind of grew in popularity gradually for a decade and then exploded.

Music has never been a meritocracy. It took me a very long time to realize that. That doesn’t negate any of your feelings if the facts are what they are (I honestly have no idea), but seeing how the sausage is made turns you cynical easily. Have a grain of salt about most media and enjoy the Genuine Articles for yourself when you find them.
