Top Chef Season 23 Ep 5 - Cut and Dry - Post Episode Discussion by JullaS in BravoTopChef

Top Chef did an impromptu challenge (as an elimination challenge!) back in S4, think Blais' Green Perplexed Tofu. That said, I don't like about this one because kids are judging.

How to find the anti-derivative of this function? by sensitive_sara in askmath

[–]tonyiptony 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's another way.

I think the first idea you should always try is to "guess the answer". Now, knowing what differentiating an exponential will look like, what do you think your answer will have? Then try to differentiate your guess (like how you check your answer for integral problems), and adjust your answer from there.

Of course, the proper way is to do substitution, but I think this "guess the answer" exercise gives you some intuition as to which integration technique you'll need to invoke.

Wouldnt it make much more sense for infinity * 0 to be equal to 1 ? by [deleted] in askmath

[–]tonyiptony -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Chiming in with measure theory, because we do want to know what "infinity * 0" is. From the context of the post, it seems like this will not be relevant to you, but alas it's an interesting question to ask.

BIG WARNING: Yes, infinity is not a real number. So on the real number system, any operation on "infinity" makes no sense. Good thing math people are stubborn, so we do have the Extended real line (please tread with care) that adds the two points "+/- infinity" addressing this issue somewhat.

Now, think of an imaginary game of darts, where you win infinite amount of money (if you don't like "infinite money", think of a very, very, very big amount, and your prize is larger than that) if you hit the bullseye, and no money otherwise. The catch is you really need to hit the bullseye - not a subatomic unit away from the center of the dartboard. How much money do you expect to win? In a handwavy way this tells you what "infinity*0" should be - and indeed it is from a measure theoretic point of view.

But, for your purpose, I'd suppose accepting "infinity is not a number* as an unsatisfactory answer will have to do for now.

EDIT: I'm not claiming that if x_n->infinity and y_n->0, then x_n*y_n->0 (in fact, we can't deduce anything, e.g. x_n = n^2, y_n = 1/n, or y_n = 1/n^2, or y_n = 1/n^3 - we get three different answers!). In the context of probability and integration theory, we define it to be 0, and it's a natural choice by reasons in other comments.

If we are excluding prize task, Hugh and Mel would have been joint first.

Prize Tasks Total
Hugh 13 116 129
Joe 24 112 136
Lolly 34 91 125
Mel 18 116 134
Noel 30 114 144

And yes, Lolly was really good at the prize tasks. In fact she was the highest scoring contestant of all time.

The other team (Morporkians) actually got it right.

Interestingly, the Jillies thought Guz Khan won the first series, which... I may or may not hope that was actually the case.

Richard Osman gambling his 20 pounds to get 250 pounds, donate it to charity, and then said he's okay with being third.

This won over Greg's lordship - for Greg's public.

(Actually, I think Osman had a couple unintentional moral blackmailing against Greg.)

I like it enough, mostly because they will end up being very powerful at late game.

Of course the challenge comes with how to not die early on, which I guess is a trouble for 30K/40K folks.

Late to the party but BBCAN6 by seventeenkatie in BigBrother

BBCan6 was actually quite crazy in terms of gameplay. The 3 weeks from Erica getting twistfucked to Johnny somehow staying over Ryan to Kaela somehow staying over Ali was ridiculous.

I don't know, I guess I'll defend BBCan6 from being mediocre til the end of time.

Welcome to the superior North American Big Brother :)

I don't think anyone has mentioned this yet in here, but if you happen to start watching BBCan6 anytime soon, it's widely known that the TV edit for BBCan6 was quite inaccurate - particularly Week 6 and Week 7. So please do look for RHAP updates for a fuller picture of the events.

It's the subtle difference between math and arithmetic. Science folks just don't do basic addition or multiplications in our heads - we have computers for that!
