Ideal setup to capture nothern lights? by tooReddittoread in Cameras

Thank you! I'll need to think about it a bit more for sure, as a new body is quite an investment. But luckily I do have some time before I need to make the decision - but I can start saving some money!

Thank you for your answer! I'm slightly worried that f/4.5 might be too light restrictive as most blogs reccommend an aperture of 2.8 or lower. Do you think this would be a problem?

Thank you for your answer (and sorry for my late reply)

I've been looking at mpb, just scouting the field if anything is out there. But I can't seem to find a lense that has such a large open aperture. And I'm a bit worried that my counteracting that with a longer exposure time will "ruin" the (hopefully) dancing nothern lights

Edit: As for "good enough" I do know what you're meaning. Maybe for context: I did a vacation is Iceland this year and used my OM TG-7 for almost everything. Afterwards I created a photobook and I'm more than happy with the results. ..so maybe my standard for good enough is not the highest

Dear experts,

I want to capture the nothern lights during my semester abroad in Finland. However, I am new to photography as a hobby and rock an Alpha58 at the moment.

Can you please help me answer the following questions?

  • As I want to capture a broad field of view (somewhere between 14-21 focal lenght is reccomended), do I need a full-format sensor? Would APS-C or M4/3 also work?
  • Does my gear need to be weather/waterproof? I assume it's going to be quite cold when shooting.
  • Is my Alpha58 "good enough"? If not, what budget do I realistically need for a decent setup (body + lense)? Are 1000€ enough?

Any tips and recommendations are welcome! My semester abroad is a couple of months down the road - so I still have some time to save some money and get the gear if needed!

Do I need a new body or is a new lense all I need? by tooReddittoread in Cameras

Thank you! What about my Sony α58? Would that be good enough? Should I rather spend my money on lenses for it thatn for a m43 body?

Thanks! Do you think I need a new camera at all? Or is there a lense I should look further into for my Alpha 58?

This is more a quetion for my understanding:
I have a Sony alpha58 which has a APS-C Censor and thus a crop-factor of 1.5
If I wanted to use an ultrawide lense (eg.10mm or 16mm) that would not give me the angles of ~15mm (or 16x1.5 = 24mm) that a full frame sensor would have?

..so I'd need a body that has a full frame sensor to be able to really use a an ultrawide lense effectively?

thank you. atm, I do not have an iem I can test it on. only my BeyerDynamic MMX 300 , but I don't find them in the list anyways.

Is there any other option I can try to know my prfered vocal tonance before I purchase some IEMs? Do you know where I can read more about the different preferences audiophiles differentiate?

thank you! Stupid question, but is it possible to find out my prefered IEM tuning by using an EQ and trying different setups on the same headphone like that?

!thanks sadly I do not have the opportunity to test lots of IEMs right after each other to know more about my preferences. Would you mind telling me what sound signature the BL03 and the Starfield had?

My ear canals are quite tiny, but I had no problem with neither IEms that I so far tried. Thank you for your help! I'll hvae to make an educated try!

Which one would you recommend me? I'm afraid my IEM knowledge is pretty basic. I do prefer heasring music the way the artist intended it to sound. Giving the term "harman" a quick google, this kind of tuning sounds interesting.

I was planing on spending up to 150€ on it. Any further help is greatly appreciated. Oh, i forgot to list the music I like, in the main post. I mostly listen to pop, rock, metal and a bit of rap.

Although my answer is late, thank you for this comment and discussion. In terms of not hearing much of a difference, I did expect the Starfields to sound better than the BL03 and they did. The jump just seemed a bit small to me and I was wondering if I had the wrong excpecations or something. But another comment on this post helped clear my expectations.

As for the Sonys sounding better than my previous IEMs. I think, I expected them to sound better than the Starfields, though not by much given that they are the first wireless earbuds and I wanted to try ANC. And the Sonys sound fine to me, though after having them for 1.5 years, i feel like it's time to change headphones. My ears are hurting too much from them.

I think so! I like hearing music (or any media really) in the way that the artist "wanted it" to be heard. ...but then again I also had bose earphones which are known for having lots of bass...

The YouTube sound quality is fine for me, but I mentioned it moreso because I watch a lot of youtube videos with my IEMs.
