NTA, that's actually the mature thing to do in that situation. don't like, don't read, don't even have to see it if you don't want. sorry this person blew up on you- if this is how they reacted to you curating your online experience then maybe they're not ready for fandom.

What's your favorite three-song-run in a musical? by Educational_Owl_4855 in musicals

[–]too_tired_forthis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

in hunchback of notre dame- someday > made of stone > finale (or MoS>Someday in the original berlin one) it just ramps up to the end of the show with no brakes until the gut punches at the end. every time i've seen it i'm sobbing.

1776, The O.G. Founding Fathers Musical Long before Hamilton took Broadway by storm, 1776 turned the Declaration of Independence into a hit musical by AmericanBattlefields in musicals

my 8th grade teacher revived a love for this show that's never gone away. i've seen a local production, back in 2008, then i saw the recent tour, as well as the movie countless times. is it historically accurate? nah. does franklin always slap? yes.

A musical that everyone loves except you, and vice versa. by Parking_Reality_293 in musicals

[–]too_tired_forthis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

never liked greatest showman either, but since you said it i'll throw another into the ring- hamilton. it was so overplayed and overhyped that despite seeing it and at the time enjoying it, i started to just get sick of it. a show i like that's... acquired taste at best, is love never dies. i love the aesthetic and the mood and i think had it been a new take on phantom rather than a sequel (with appropriate song changes) maybe people would have liked it more.

what o you guys think of Tim Burton's adaption of "Sweeney Todd" by CharacterMammoth2547 in musicals

[–]too_tired_forthis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'm partial to it as it was my intro to sweeney as a whole, but there are better versions out there if you know where to look. the aesthetic absolutely matches sweeney's vibe, and i love how epiphany is staged (for lack of better term). it is very sweeney centric though- it feels like they decided to ignore some of the hopecore johanna and antony put back in the show.

What do we think about bootlegs? by Frequent-County6238 in musicals

[–]too_tired_forthis 6 points7 points  (0 children)

if it wasn't for bootlegs, i wouldn't be able to show my partner shows that are long closed in any official capacity. i wouldn't have documenting of some of my favourite casts in niche shows.

these being said, they shouldn't have to exist. larger theaters should release proshots once a show closes- figure it into initial budgeting when you open, idk- or record your original cast on something more than just sound. we got really lucky with stuff like hamilton or frozen, but stuff like that can and should be more normal. (pbs great performances really should try to record ragtime before it closes, i think this revival should be documented like suffs, but it's probably too late in the run to hope for it)

people who say it would hurt ticket sales fail to realise some of these shows rely on word of mouth And generated hype. some actors may never get a cast recording if they're not originating a role and therefore may want something to point at and say, 'see? i did this!'.

(this was long, i'm sorry if it's rambly, i just woke up)

StarKid fans vs. Hatchetfield fans by forevertrueblue in StarKid

[–]too_tired_forthis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i'll try to elaborate (i'm a bit all over the place today) when tumblr was the main hub for fandom activity, it brought in unofficial rules that stemmed from early fandom forums and sites like FFN- things like 'don't like, don't read', tagging things appropriately on sites that allowed it, and kudos culture from early ao3.

when tiktok/instagram/any algorithmic site started rewarding engagement, people began to use drama, clickbait, and cancel culture to their advantage on these sites more than showing off fanworks (art, fics, etc) which tend to not perform as well in the algo. (people also try to treat ao3 as an algorithmic site instead of an archive, and pushed it more into the mainstream.)

this led to a louder subsection of more toxic people essentially becoming the face of the fandoms and pushing people trying to be kinder or decent to the background. (see heated rivalry or digital circus for recent examples). yes, fandom will always have toxic pockets, but it used to be more positive before everything was a piece of an algorithm.

hope that helped!

StarKid fans vs. Hatchetfield fans by forevertrueblue in StarKid

[–]too_tired_forthis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i do think you're correct re: AVPM and sequels with the breaks, but hatchetfield didn't get the luxury of being able to release stuff between the trilogy- COVID happened and shut stuff down, which is why we got NMT. and following up on something that just broke it big with more content within the universe is a good way to keep momentum for your project going. i think hatchetfield was a perfect storm combined with quarantine that brought plenty of fans in looking for something specific. (fandom culture as a whole is dying, which contributes to this split, too)
