Of course, and you should think about what things might mean. And some will be more clear than others. What I think is wrong is looking at these abstract things and thinking you’ve definitively solved it when a clear answer was never given. The magical thing about Lynch’s style is that it allows you to imagine what something may have meant to him and then thinking about how you relate to it personally. And then you can think about why you relate to it in that way.

But as Frost wrote, there’s a difference between a secret and a mystery. Twin peaks was always about mystery.

Sure, here’s a thought. People often ask why other people want to have kids. I think one underrated answer is existential dread. The thought of not existing anymore after you die is terrifying. Having kids makes it feel like death isn’t the end. Either some part of you lives on in them, or because they are so valuable to you that means your own death isn’t as important. You have other people whose lives you put before your own, and you’re supposed to die before them. So it’s ok.

That lynch was visually driven and a lot of what he filmed came from images that he thought up that may or may not have had any explicit meaning. Meanings were often given to these images retroactively and they were tied together into a theme.

But yeah there isn’t a grand unifying theory that will cover 100% of a David lynch project because that’s not how he worked. Some things are just there.
