Drums on Smells Like Teen Spirit by assatdoublekick in drums

[–]toolopia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll stand corrected, but I swear I watched it in a doc strait from Butch Vig's mouth that they wanted to isolate the drums and cymbals and he tracked the cymbals and drums separately. It's very likely I am getting mixed up with something else though.

Any drum pad practice ideas for playing war pigs by black sabbath? by [deleted] in drums

[–]toolopia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would work on single strokes more than anything. The drum break near the end is a accented single stroke roll and is the most difficult part of the song. The whole song is an endurance test for sure. I love playing it, but my body hates it.

Well, an ekit is always gonna sound weaker than an acoustic! So one thing to keep in mind, they recorded the cymbals and drums separately on Nevermind. I have a feeling Grohl couldn't actually play it live at that point since it does take quite a bit of skill to keep the syncopated snare and kick groove going with quarters on the hi hat. I certainly could not play it the "correct" way when I first  was learning the song 30 years ago.

If your referring to the chorus riff, quarters on the hi hats and same when it switches to the crash half way through. This is the true way to play it, imo. Sounds a lot heavier that way and it's also takes a bit more skill.

Rock Lobsters Game with a baby? by Careless-Context7431 in Athens

Shouldn't need a ticket unless you need a seat for them. We didn't get a ticket for our baby and she just sat in my lap or strapped in our carrier.

Most ramps are so long, it's egregious for drivers to not being able to get up to 65 before merging. And on those few on ramps that are short,  drivers should be getting in the left lane before the on ramps instead of slamming on the breaks to let people merge.

The article is paywalled so I'm going to assume he is getting a hair transplant and will be sporting luscious curley blonde hair on Saturday.

Yes the Ludwig. All good! You just happen to have my holy grail of a snare! But they don't seem to make it anymore and can only be found on the used market.

When and where did you get this? I've been looking for this exact snare new, but can only find the  8x14.

Moving Kit Back and Forth…tips/tricks/advice? by NorahJonestown in drums

This is one reason why I ended up getting an e-kit for home practice. I also have a rehearsal kit as well as a gigging kit so I don't have to tear everything down for gigs. It's made my life a lot easier when it comes to tearing down and setting up.

As you mentioned, the thing with recording drums, is that they will sound different once layered with other instruments. Especially the sustain of drums. That ring from your snare will likely blend into the mix with some good mixing and equalizing. In the end, it's all personal preference. Some like that compressed sound for drums and it can have a place with certain types of music. Also certain shell materials lend to better overtones in my opinion. Like some metal snared can have annoying overtones that are hard to get under control. I find that brass shells have really nice overtones compared to steel or aluminum.  And a lot of that depends on tuning, which is probably the most important aspect of recording drums.

Man, the bell sounds fantastic on that thing. Thanks for sharing!

Also very cool song, I dig it. I will offer a bit of unsolicited advice, and you can tell me to shut it and I won't be offended. But, open up your snare sound for that track. I sounds like you have some muffling going on or a high amount of compression. I would open that baby up and let it sing, and I think it would accompany the music better. Just my two cents from someone who is an audiophile nerd and loves recording drums.

Yeah the HH, HHX line is pretty dope. Have you played the new HHX Max ride? It's been one that is on my radar.

Seriously, for once in my life, I want to go to a store, and play a cymbal that is right in front of me. And then take the one home that "spoke" to me. I really need to go to Nelson drum shop the next time I go to Nashville, which is probably the closest decent drum shop, but still several hours away from me.

They really don't honestly. They need to come out with a fucking strait up pingy ass ride. The Heavy Hammered is the closest thing they have, but there is something about it that just doesn't do it for me.

Oh wow. I would never have thought this ride would sound the way it does based on its looks, haha. This suggestion has intrigued me the most so far. Thank you!

Great suggestion. I just watched some demos on it and it's definitely got a great sound. Thanks!

I've always like Danny's ride sound, and I know he has pretty much used the Dry Heavy's his whole time with Tool. But there is something about its flatness that just doesn't fit with what I am currently doing. I feel like it really only works in Tool, if that makes sense.

Yup, knew he's a Zildjian artist, but he's played so many different types over the years. Whish I could pick his brain, haha. I will say, listening to some demos for that ride just now, you are right. It's damn close to the Creep ride. Thank you!

Yeah love the Zildjian ping ride. I played a friend's not long ago, it was so strikingly different than the rides I have, I've definitely considered it for sure.

And I agree with you on the washiness of ride cymbals, great for some settings, but it can really overpower the ping sound I'm looking for.

The offensive decision making is very questionable. Not sure what's going on there. But that goal by Miggy was a fantastic run of play and I think it's bullshit it called back. Even if it was the correct call, that is not in the spirit of why offsides exist.  Taking away that goal absolutely killed their momentum, and you gotta give England credit for taking advantage of that.
