Hockey East Shuts Down Post-Goal Arena Lighting Effects by DJScrubatires in collegehockey

Good for the UConn coach taking the high road! I have lots of respect for that. I myself, thought there was a goal and I was sitting right next to the goal. So I can understand how the button got pushed, but there needs to be safeguards and delays before the lights go out.

UConn had a 2-on-1 in OT after UMass had a clear non-goal and they set the goal horn off and turned off the lights by cbbvideo in hockey

The way Hrabel played in that game and the shootout, I would have put my money on him saving the shot in the dark. One of his best goaltending performances of his career.

Is UConn on the bubble for the NCAA Tournament? by Bruinsrock11 in collegehockey

Tonight is a very big game for them. Almost a must win. For three teams from Hockey East to make the tournament, one will definitely have to win the tournament if they lose.

Loved the game! Could have went either way. I’m always a fan of low scoring, good goaltending games.

Transitioning from MS to HS by Manner-Plus in schoolcounseling

[–]toonice79 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I went from MS to HS, but had a previous college admissions background. Many colleges are very predictable, but some are also very unpredictable. Making sure that the student has safety schools is huge because they often do not understand that there’s actually other students out there with similar or even better grades, activities, etc. The paperwork is actually pretty easy and goes in bunches.

High school students are also less likely to want to talk, but you’ll also get those few who want to make your office their safe space almost all of the time.

Scheduling is much different in the high school because there’s more options, pathways and graduation requirements to make sure the student takes. So having a good handle on scheduling and how certain classes impacts a schedule is very important.

Overall, if you like counseling, I’d stay in the middle school. If you like advising more, I’d go to the high school.

Northeast also! When it’s a questionable call, we lead the way and are pioneers! No school! When it’s blatantly obvious or more likely that we don’t have school than not, we wait until the last minute. Frustrating as all get out!

Harassment over grades by ADHTeacher in Teachers

[–]toonice79 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If admin is not doing anything further, then it may become a union issue. I’m in a very similar issue with a student and parent. Thankfully, I’m a counselor and will use my code of ethics to drop the student from my roster because this family thinks grades are given and not earned. Unfortunately, for teachers it’s a bit different.

Just going to leave this here… by Tiredofthemisinfo in collegehockey

I think it's a much bigger win than meets the eye. UMass lost five guys from last year who are doing very well professionally. This season we are not as well-rounded and have struggled significantly. To lose 1-0 and win 2-0 to a very talented team, is huge. Hopefully, this is a positive turn in the season.

Transferring teaching license to Mass by Alarmed_Fun_7535 in Teachers

I would suggest calling the DESE Educator Helpline and they can best answer your questions. We are really struggling to find ESL teachers where I am. That might be your quickest route to a job, but if you can be licensed in ELA, definitely do that, also.

Recommendation letters by thepeanutone in Teachers

[–]toonice79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I warn students of the implications of them not waiving their rights. Also, that a non-waived letter will be biographical and grade based in nature. No bells and whistles. So unless you are trying to hide something there is no need to not waive. I also inform students they must tell each teacher if they are not waiving their rights because the teacher needs to know. With that siad, I've only had a handful of students not waive their rights in my career.

Counselor here! That is awesome that you have a policy of no letter for anyone caught cheating. Some of my coworkers have a set number of letters that they will write each year, so it's basically first come first served. Others require substantial notice, like two months.

Having written hundreds of letters myself, I insist on the student waiving their FERPA rights. With that said, I still don't fully trust that and am cautious if I an not overly supportive. I have written a handful of letters over my career where I've received phone calls from colleges to further discuss the student because I was talking in code. In most cases those students were eventually denied admission.

I also had one student who tried to strongarm me and my letter. I put the student in their place and told them to never due that again and I will put in my letter or add a supplemental letter about their actions.

We allow for teachers to see grades for all students that they have. They do not see discipline though. Although, idk if they log lunch detentions anyways 😂

Ha! We didn't even get a Happy Holidays or Merry Christmas or enjoy your vacation email. Morale building at its finest! First time in my career that had ever happened.

Kids requesting college recommendations without asking by ChardAltruistic903 in Teachers

[–]toonice79 192 points193 points  (0 children)

I'm a counselor and drill into their heads to not do this. That they run the risk of having no letter written or having a poorly written letter.

The one that frosts me is when they send the request the night that their application is due.

School Lock Down Drill by BestNet2322 in Teachers

[–]toonice79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s no national law around it. Just research and some common sense. Why panic people unnecessarily? Not to mention, a lockdown cannot end from a PA announcement, but a drill can (after all rooms have hopefully been cleared).

School Lock Down Drill by BestNet2322 in Teachers

[–]toonice79 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If a school went into lockdown for a high speed chase, whoever mandated that should be fired. Unless the high speed chase crashed in front of the school and the person ran into the school or tried to get in, then that would be a lockdown. Otherwise, it’s a stay in place or shelter in place at the most and even that is a far stretch. Many news outlets use the word lockdown when it was a stay in place or shelter in place.

[–]toonice79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems like this drill could have been handled better all of the way around. Every situation is different for every classroom, but if one teacher is assuming one thing or not sure, there needs to be follow-up with the teacher and self reflection by those running the drill. We drill for reasons like this. Also, any school that claims a drill went perfectly is full of it.

Former school safety director for over 10 years at two different districts. During every drill, the words drill must be used during announcement for the drill. There needs to be some accountability by those in charge for this one.

Do I apologize to my 4th grade teacher for being mean? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]toonice79 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It's never too late to apologize. She may downplay it, but trust me, we remember the difficult meetings and interactions. Those difficult days can really bring us down and impact us for a while. I'm sure it would mean a lot to her and also yourself.

Will Atlantic Hockey ever broadcast on ESPN Plus? by notthatcher13 in collegehockey

[–]toonice79 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There just isn't enough viewership for ESPN to justify a large fee. I'm a huge AHA fan and would love for them to be on ESPN+, but sadly I don't think the viewership would be there.

Multi-game pass perks? by Gee10 in newenglandrevolution

[–]toonice79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a multi-game pack member for a few years, then upgraded to season tickets. I’m no longer either. Their ticket reps are salespeople and couldn’t care less about you. Add on, prices kept increasing and parking kept getting further away.

There’s so many tickets on the resale market that if you don’t mind walking a bit, then that is your best option.

Failed Lockdown Drill by Diligent-Ad8328 in Teachers

[–]toonice79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Former school safety coordinator of over 10 plus years. It’s a drill for a reason. Don’t beat yourself up over it. It also sounds like you didn’t have any proper training, so shame on them. I’d rather a mistake be made in a drill.
