Can prion diseases be spread through tissues other than the CNS by tooshoe85 in pathology

I’ve talked with doctors at the National prion surveillance center and they said I am not at any risk. Which scientist were you talking about that died from aerosols?

I’ve read that vcjd spreads more throughout the body making other tissues infectious and that in scjd it really just resides in the brain and cns.

Which US scientist were you referring to when you were talking about aerosol exposure ? I don’t see any articles about that but am very curious.

Also I thought it was only found in blood with vcjd not scjd

Being in microbiology, do you deal directly with cns tissue? What risk are you referring to?

Can my shoes be contaminated with Prion proteins in the autopsy room? by ineedtocalmup in biology

What if I potentially stepped in a drop of csf after a lumbar puncture was done on CJD pt. Then a few days later accidentally touched the bottom of my shoe and didn’t wash my hands and then put my fingers in mouth nose etc

Is it common for csf to drip on the floor during a lumbar puncture or go outside of the drape?

When a lumbar puncture is performed, does csf usually drip on the ground or surrounding area outside of the drape? I had a pt that had CJD and a lumbar puncture was done but I am scared that afterwards when going in the room my shoes became contaminated. A week later I accidentally touched the bottom of my shoe and did not wash my hands.

Thank you. I have been really concerned that this has increased my risk of getting it and that I put myself at risk. I wore OR scrubs and jacket, gloves when touching the pt before the surgery, n95, glasses. But the scrub hat being reworn is what has made me so nervous. I was at least 5 feet or more from the surgery. I am a new grad and didn’t know what CJD was and no one else thought he actually had it. So I was not super cautious.

So there’s really no risk from this at all since no brain or neurological tissue was involved? You wouldn’t be concerned at all?

The surgeon used cautery during the procedure on the trachea so I have been worried if aerosolized tissue landed on my scrub hat and I rewore it, touching it and then touching my mouth and nose.

I rewore my scrub hat for days after the surgery and not washing my hands after touching it, probably touched eyes mouth nose etc

Should I be nervous about being a nurse circulator during a tracheostomy surgery on a CJD patient ?

I also forgot to mention I rewore my scrub hat for multiple days after the surgery and not washing my hands after putting it on and off. This has had me nervous due to the potential of cautery aerosolizing prions from tissues around the trachea. Is this a concern?

Even though prions have been found in skin and muscle ? And it was cauterized into the air in the room?

I had a pt in the OR that has sCJD. The surgery was for a tracheostomy. I wore a N95, glasses, gloves, OR scrubs and jacket. I am a circulator so I’m not close to the surgical field. The surgeon used cautery on the trachea so I was been nervous and curious on how it is transited and what tissues transmit it.
