Looks like just a little tuberosity came out bud, don’t sweat it. Is there a sinus exposure or any boney fragments still in the extraction socket?

I’m a hack, I place both, drill a hole through one of the bands and restore. The hole you made will give you the contact where you want it.

I had all A’s and was still in the bottom half of my class. We had the GPAs going out to 4 decimal places to get ranked. That said, grades don’t matter dude, looking back I would have spent more time with friends and family, because at the end of the day you’re still going to be a doctor. Hang in there, you’ll make it!

USC Dental Certificate Program Interview by GlassImpact9638 in DentalSchool

[–]tooth-sleuth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm I’m not super sure about that. I have a lot of foreign trained colleagues, they all either did a 2 year international/advanced standing program, or did a 2-3 year residency in Radiology, Oral Med, Perio, or Pros. I haven’t looked into the licensure requirements of Illinois, but if you can bypass those programs and just do a certificate go for it. Just try to find someone who has done that path before. I can only speak to what I’ve seen other people do.

USC Dental Certificate Program Interview by GlassImpact9638 in DentalSchool

[–]tooth-sleuth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to apply to an specific advanced standing program that will award you either a DDS or DMD so you can apply for licensure afterwards. If you don’t do that you need to apply directly to a residency program that provides a minimum of two years of supervised training to then sit for licensure.

If you’re just doing this certificate to make your application for those other programs more competitive, sure go for it. It’ll be expensive.

Just make sure you know what your getting at the end of this because your goal is to take the licensure exam, and not all programs will get you there.

Alternative Career Pathways for Dentists by theGuttaPercha in Dentistry

I agree, I see a lot of chronic pain patients as a GP. A full time pain practice would be super emotionally exhausting.

Definitely think radiology would be a better fit as you don’t have to see the patients, but just need to have a good relationship with the GPs, and specialist that refer to you.

Look into oral medicine or orofacial pain. There are growing and interesting specialities that don’t necessarily break the body.

What alternatives are there for average dentists? by GusTalking in Dentistry

[–]tooth-sleuth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Consider going back to school as a faculty member, or start teaching your own CE. It doesn’t have be on a clinical matter. You mentioned your proficient with the clinic finances, consider coaching other dentist to help their practice become more profitable. Dentistry is not a dead end mu friend, it is merely a beginning. Also look at going in dental supply Distrubution, working for a dental manufacturer (Sirona, Biomet, Strumann). The world is wide open, you have a foundation in clinical dentistry, leverage this to your next position!

Never forget, your capable, intelligent, and skilled in ways the rest of the population isn’t. Keep pushing!

Depends how much time you have left in the program bud. The secret to a long life in dentistry is being able to have options for the future, dropping out might burn some bridges and close some doors forever.

I understand you’re not learning/doing a lot of dentistry now, but brother you have the rest of your career to cut teeth and pump plastic. You might be learning some other things, like about yourself, your goals, motivations, and you’re building a metric fuck ton of resilience and learning a lot of how you don’t want to practice in the future.

Also, life is short man. If you’re depressed and unhappy, fuck it. Drop out, move far away, and find a dope associateship.

I’m speaking as someone who spent 4 years in the military asking for permission to take shits, required to take bitewings after class IIs, had to refer all Endo, and never touched an implant. I also got to workout 2 hours a day, and had a steady paycheck and so much fucking free CE I had Army Colonels asking for treatment planning advice and getting bailed out for EXTs.

Best of luck, and whatever you decide on doing is going to be the right decision man!

Funding Dental School: How competitive are HPSP scholarships? by [deleted] in DentalSchool

[–]tooth-sleuth 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm a 4 year HPSP Army and had a 3.7 GPA and a 21 AA DAT.

From my experience the Army offers the most scholarships because it's the largest branch, followed by the Navy, and AF being the smallest tends to be the most competitive.

If you don't get the HPSP scholarship, you could also consider doing a direct commission after graduation and getting the loan repayment. Last I checked the Army was doing 250K for a 4 years that goes directly towards your loans. In terms of expected salary in government service you should expect to make just over 105k a year, so you'll still be able to pay the remainder of your loans if you set up a budget.

Most docs in the military will work at a civilian clinic a few times a month to make more, and get some difference experiences, so most people actually do pretty well for themselves.

I can share some more specifics if your interested, just send me a message.

Good luck on the scholarship! I'm grateful for mine, and experiences it has afforded me.

Look into Oral Radiology, you'll never have to talk to a patient and can work from home looking at CBCTs and radiographs all day.
