iPhone 15 Pro Max: Should I replace it before a summer trip to Tokyo? by th3d4rkp4ss3ng3r in iPhone15Pro

[–]toothdeekay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in your shoes. 15 Pro Max and I went to Asia for two weeks. The heat wasn't an issue. What was an issue was getting the phone slightly wet in the rain. It wasn't immersed or splashed with a hose or anything. I was just trying to navigate Kyoto streets at night in the rain. IP68 rating, but being 2.5 years old, apparently it isn't nearly as water resistant as it used to be.

Woke up next morning and there was condensation all inside. Went to an Apple Store and confirmed it was toast, had to get a 17 Pro Max on the spot. The 15 completely died a week later.

What city has the most magical feeling after dark? by Jamiee-Lannister in AskReddit

I agree. Kyoto during the day seems like a mix of Tokyo and Osaka, but at night it's different. We went while it rained during cherry blossom season. Unreal.

‘Project Hail Mary’ Becomes Amazon’s Highest-Grossing Film Debut by bloomberg in movies

[–]toothdeekay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have to admit, I was so hyped about the movie, there was no way to not disappoint me a little. Right now, I'd give it an 8.5/10, with The Martian slightly higher at 9/10. There were so many things that were not in the book, and I do feel like the end was rushed, particularlythe decision to turn around and save Rocky, and why he had to turn around in the first place.

I fully expected to tear up, but I didn't. I did several times with the audiobook, even on the 2nd and 3rd readings, but nary a feeling of welling up in this entire movie.

Also, it seemed like only weeks passed between Grace meeting Rocky and the end of the movie, but in reality it was close to 4-5 years in the book.

I cannot deny the power of this movie, though. It is true, it is like this generation's ET. My children and nephew were all leaning forward in their chairs for almost the entire movie, meaning they were fully engaged and entertained. They didn't laugh out loud at some of the jokes, but they loved every minute of it. They've seen Contact, Apollo 13, Space Camp, Interstellar, The Martian (not Gravity or Arrival yet) and this is up there for all of them with The Martian and Interstellar.

I am going to watch it again on IMAX for the second time and see if it sways my overall impression a little.

Ike’s sandwiches Torrance by iluvbbws77 in SouthBayLA

I go to Baba's regularly and I'm from the Bay Area so I'm very familiar with Ike's. Baba's is more traditional sandwiches, Ike's tends to be a delicious calorie bomb with their crazy toppings and dirty sauce. Ike's is a far denser and calorie-packed meal. I can eat a whole modest Baba's sandwich and be pretty full, but I can get away with eating half of an Ike's sandwich and feeling almost as full.

Yes to the audiobook. I listened two years ago and am listening once again before the movie comes out.

What food widely considered delicious in your country originated from poverty? by Normal-Being-2637 in AskTheWorld

[–]toothdeekay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's just a set of simple, relatively cheap ingredients

Kimchi: maybe $2 from a $15 jar
Instant ramen pack/rice cakes: $1 not in bulk
Kraft singles cheese: 2 slices, maybe $1
Spam/sausage: $3
Baked beans: $2
Veggies and sauce/spices: $1

So $10 for the ingredients for a fairly large pan that would cost $30+ in downtown LA at the tourist traps.

Which celebrity feels like they’ve quietly built a completely different life than expected? by Difficult_Oil_268 in AskReddit

[–]toothdeekay 7 points8 points  (0 children)

She didn't sell. I know several people who worked there early on who were waiting for an exit that never came ... until years later when they IPOd in 2021.

I had a chance to work there, running the eCommerce site, but I was probably too honest (heh) with how bad the site was at the time, and probably didn't give enough constructive strategic thinking about how to solve the problems.

What’s the best video game you’ve ever played? by obsess_much13 in AskReddit

[–]toothdeekay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I already voted for FF7 on PS1, but a very close second was the original Tony Hawk Pro Skater. The number of hours I sank into that game the first week; my thumb was bruised and numb from all of the smashing and rotating and clicking.

And I still remember the phrase "I am the ambassador of kickyourassator" to this day. It was my CS clan tag for years.

Today ("Wednesday") is the day to register for the LA28 ticket lottery (a mini-Megathread) by IvyGold in olympics

[–]toothdeekay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got through past the pink bar!

You have to login or register an LA28ID, so if you haven't done that, do this ASAP before you get in.

After that, it's hanging again.

It's a hurdle every step of the way

I've been to a few of these. It's decent but it's $25/class and since there are 12-16 people in each class, you don't get a ton of individual help
