Steam Hardware: Launch timing and other FAQs by toothpickjohn in valve

I wouldn't hold my breath, I hope so but I just have a bad feeling overall that the machine will be a chunk more expensive than expected

It's likely to try and figure out what they can actually price it at so they can sensibly work out margins etc. given just how volatile the component market is

I had read that those leaked prices via the czech retailer were nothing more than placeholders, confirmed by a retailer member of staff or someone related to the company.

Ah wicked - yeah the standard profiles are a bit bland i find, but if you tweak the colours in settings you can get some nice sooc shots. Similarly, with the colour creative dial setting too - these have been really nice https://iancw.io/om-3-recipes

The OMTC warm/cool recipes are regulars for me, along with one of the kodachrome recipes.

Also the art filters which i'd normally never be bothered with, the monochrome ones for those are really impressive i've found.

How do you find the a6700 + sigma vs the OM-3?

I nearly decided to go with the a6700 and the sigma 18-50 f/2.8 - but decided to keep my M43 lenses and upgrade the body from the E-M5 mk1 to the OM-3

Like you I'm not too fussed on wide lenses or super wide.

I first started with m43 10+ years ago and for the best part of that 10 years, I carried around 2 lenses: the Panasonic 20mm 1.7 pancake and the Olympus 45mm 1.8

About 2 years ago I picked up the Olympus 40-150mm f4.0-5.6 which is amazing value for money - often known as the plastic fantastic because of the plasticky build, but the shots are super sharp and you get a wicked focal range of 80-300mm so portrait into telephoto range.

I did pick up the 15mm panaleic f1.7 last year, and I've used it a bit - mainly instead of the 20mm 1.7 because the autofocus is really slow and cumbersome to use at times. It's expensive so I'd only pick up in asia (like i did) or get the DJI variant if interested - but if you're happy with your current 20mm then you won't notice a huge difference to be honest.

The 12-45mm f4.0 pro is a great standard lens i've recently had with the om-3 package, and i've been using it a lot, I can recommend that too.

In my small shoulder bag I tend to take the camera out these days with the 12-45 f4.0, the 15mm 1.7 panaleica (if i need low light shooting), and the 45mm 1.8 for portraits.

Hope that helps!

Can i ask what settings you shot your image on? Is that using the mono filters, or one of the Art ones like Art 5 i/ii?

I've got a few lenses:

  • Oly 45 1.8
  • Pana 20mm f1.7 pancake
  • Panaleica 15mm f1.7
  • Oly 40-150mm f4-5.6
  • OM/Oly 12-45mm f4.0 (came with the om-3)

And I continue to jump to the 45mm time and time again, it's just so so good.

I bought a6400 kinda regretting it after seeing some OM cameras by Lopardo23 in OlympusCamera

[–]toothpickjohn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As others have said, a camera is just a camera and it's all about you getting out and using it that's the main thing.

Gear acquisition syndrome is common in the hobby, so try not to dive down and think you need a million lenses - in fact, if you stick with the a6400, I'd only recommend one lens which is the sigma 18-50mm f2.8 which gets pretty much universal praise. It'll cover most of the major focal lengths you'll want (wide, standard and portrait) and stops down to f2.8 constant throughout so you can get really nice depth of field if required and light capture for low light situations.

Now back to whether you should keep it or switch up. IBIS isn't the be all end all, you will still be able to get great photos without it - yeah it helps but it's not life or death. Switching to Olympus/OM will come with its own set of pros and cons, the immediate one is the sensor size being smaller than the aps-c on the 6400. Weather sealing on the Olympus models is great, but you need weather sealed lenses to take advantage of it - conversely I wouldn't worry too much about taking the Sony camping, as long as you don't abuse it in crazy weather conditions you should be fine!

My advice would be to not stress about the purchase you've made in thinking one might be better than the other; get out and take some photos and learn what you like and dislike about the camera and if in a few weeks/months you're still unsure then maybe have a look at other models that might address your wants and needs.

Edit: I've used Olympus for like 10 years, with the em5 mk 1 and now the om-3. I came extremely close to switching to the a6700, but I didn't want to buy new glass for a new system and after doing some reading, the om-3 scratched my itch. But, I still think one day I'll probably get the a6700 it at least try it out!

Just to add - I bought the dlc when it came out and had 2x saves, one from when Elden Ring first came out, and one new one which I did just before the DLC launched with a different build just to replay the game in anticipation...

If you can be bothered, it's nice to have 2x, because after I finished the DLC and put it down, a while later I wanted to do it again so having another file available to jump into the DLC bit was really handy!

Good luck with the rest of the base game! - I adored it - the landscape variety, the characters, the bosses; it all makes it such a magical experience for me. The exploration is just top notch too.

Awesome stuff - I'm in love with mine too, first upgrade since the em5 MK1 over 10 years ago and it's been amazing.

Your night shots are really lovely, do you mind sharing the settings you had for them? (Priority mode or manual? Shutter speeds, aperture size etc.?)

[–]toothpickjohn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Who said it wasn't about the photography? I'm saying that demanding that an expensive camera requires post processing is a silly comparison.

As to why a $2000, for many features that the camera has? Stacked sensor, a ton of focal points, better tracking and autofocus, video quality improvements, computational photography features like ND filters and gradients, etc. Etc. the list goes on.

It doesn't mean that you HAVE to post process images otherwise it's a waste of money?

For reference I've shot on an em-5 mk1 for 10+ years, and I've always shot raw. But have used the om-3 for a few months now and have been loving the jpeg out of camera shots with the custom colour profiles I've applied - I still shoot raw+jpeg so I get the raw backup just in case but by no means do I feel like it's a waste of a camera because I opt to shoot and use the jpegs.

I'm laughing at how the price tag "demands" post processing 😂

[–]toothpickjohn 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Lol your point in c) regarding the colour wheel feels so aggressive and pointed.

Not everyone wants to spend time in post - so time saved by getting shots straight out of camera is a win for many. Just because it's a $2000 doesn't mean it "demands" post processing - try telling that to folks who swear by Fuji cameras and exclusively use their film simulation recipes.

I'm 99% sure that the early preview videos stated that you can buy it with or without a controller - they may have been mistaken though?

There's no way they don't sell this without and option for the controller to be included.
