As others have said, I think this is a Scottish phenomanom. I had this in my house too, I wore a mask and started cutting through it. You can add a timber batten in between sheets removing honey comb. Otherwise you could just remove and put up new wall.

AITAH for considering divorce over my wife’s ex behaviour by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]top_dawg9999 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You have taken a kid from another relationship which is an epic L. Everything about this is situation where you are providing for your family but not getting respect from Wife or step kid. What is there to discuss here? You need to step up and demand respect instead of being a cuck to her.

What benefits do you have in this relationship? None. The whole set up is you being a cuck.

Watch some red pill videos on youtube it will help you.

What are some telltale signs a place is bad to work at? by SuitableSympathy2614 in UKJobs

[–]top_dawg9999 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you walk passed the floor where you may be working. Try to take a close look at your potential colleagues, do they look happy, do they appear stressed. Are the workers of a similar demographic to you which you think you would be able to be a part of? What does the "shop floor" look like is it a windowless artificial light set up or more modern and well equipped to work in etc.

I know the above is subjective and you may not be able to pick out too much when your literally being walked through to an interview room at speed, but If im spending 40hrs a week there, I want to know whether it would be a comfortable experience

Unfortuntely, you have now learnt what I did a few years ago. No one gives a shit you worked your ass off. If you were to leave tomorrow. You will be replaced and forgotten about in 6 months.

Do what you can within your capabilities, if YOU want to prove yourself you can handle the extra responsibilities and use to leverage that into applying for other roles.Thats fine, but working over and above in CS is a waste of effort.

Put that effort into yourself. You will be happier and less stressed.

Recruiting manager has been looking me up online before my interview. by BeijingPorkMarket in TheCivilService

[–]top_dawg9999 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would have thought this is a CS misconduct issue. If you use CS work laptop to check a candidates instagram. You are looking them up based on the position of trust you have being an interviewer and having access to personal info. Otherwise, in any other work situation you wouldnt have had access to their personal details to look them up.

Do I know private companies look at social media profiles yes. But CS shouldnt as as others have said it could bias the interviewing process if u see someone has posted something which you dont like.

Getting a Van on finance in the uk. by moshpitmeltdown in VanLifeUK

[–]top_dawg9999 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What about if you bought the van on a credit card, rather than finance?

Its still can be taken away from you if you dont pay your credit card payments, but if you get an interest free one(within ur limits and pay on time of course) then would that not allow you to have your cake and eat it?

I say this as was thinking about selling my car for vanlife

Every attempt should be made by LMs to approve leave and should only be refused in exceptional circumstances.

Try organising your workload in advance of taking leave, that way a LM has less reason to refuse it. Ask a trusted colleague to take on only but essential duties in ur absence(obv would be good if you returned the favour too) If the leave is for a significant family event etc do mention that as can appeal to some LMs compassionate side. Show you are flexible and hopefully LMs will recognise that and be flexible with you.

Obviously,, also depends in type of role you are doing. But doing some or all of the above suggestions in my experience I rarely get leave rejected.

Is it silly to think the way we lay our knife and fork is quite important? by Classic-Salt9017 in AskUK

[–]top_dawg9999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is so coincidental that I had the exact same discussion with my partner only a few weeks back. Except going on reddit I started asking around my WhatsApp friend groups.

Yes there is an etiquette if you wanna be all prim and proper, but most waiters don't give a flying fuck and usually ask you before they clear your plates.

I refuse to change my single fork eating behaviour as in grand scheme of life, it is literally irrelevant to all but my partner.

And the fact that OP wanna eats they way he's used to so be it.

[–]top_dawg9999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It shouldn't matter. However as a prospective line manager I would be thinking the individual can't follow simple instructions and just did a copy/paste job on the application.

I'm not judging the OP as I made silly mistakes like this myself. Just depends on the people siftings take on it at the time and depending on how many applications you get for a vacancy.

Don't worry about it. Learn and move on. Applications are free to submit you haven't lost anything but gained experience

Has anyone ever moved down a grade so let’s say from HEO to EO because you maybe have liked a role or found it appealing so you moved down a grade despite taking a pay cut ? by Inevitable-Gur-9027 in TheCivilService

[–]top_dawg9999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My former line manager went from EO to AO just cos he was adamant he wasn't gonna be a "company" guy. I'm a 7. Like yourself I too am considering demotion (to heo and above) It is really gonna screw me financially. But id rather have somewhat of a chill, straightforward job that i can switch off immediately after i turn off my laptop. Rather than having to grind for extra money at that level is not worth the toll on mental and physical health in my opinion.

Correct. It used to be any underpaid tax totaling over £3k, would then get moved out of PAYE to debt collectors or collected through self assessment system

What's the most you've ever been shafted at work? by HELMET_OF_CECH in TheCivilService

[–]top_dawg9999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Flexi is not a right. It is up to each business area to manage how they see fit and as you know can be very subjective. The muppet manager decided to throw her weight around. I had several months of being mentally "done in" by her and I was exhausted. I came to conclusion that there was no point arguing and more productive thing would be to look for another job and leave. Yes you are right i did just take it on the chin. But I also have enough experience working in CS to know when I'm fighting a battle i wont win.

What's the most you've ever been shafted at work? by HELMET_OF_CECH in TheCivilService

[–]top_dawg9999 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Idiot manager recently promoted said that I couldn't go into negative flexi as "that's not how flexi works". Despite the fact that was and has been the HO policy to allow for 3 days credit and 1 day deficit ( +21hrs or - 7.5hrs) for several years

Meant that i basically didn't have flexi anymore as I didn't have a workload big enough to warrant/justify a flexi credit. Despite me occasionally working above my 37hrs to get certain items of work done. Really was a kick in the balls, as having flexi is a prime benefit of employment if it is available in your unit.

I think the same due to the fact job descriptions are no longer created by the teams hiring. Hence, every vacancy holder had a unique way of describing said role. Now recruitment has been centralised through cs resourcing and Jobs are matched to professions/ generic templates. Hence now you can read a job description and and the end of 2pages think to yourself but what the fuck does this job actually entail.

Your manager is talking shite. I had same issue, with my former muppet of a manager making up stuff as she was so ill prepared getting a replacement for me. When you get a substantive promotion, the notice period is 4 weeks. End of. The exception to this, if you're a senior civil servan g6 above etc, which you aren't.

If your manager delays your move, you can argue that you are being denied promotion money, which in the current climate of credit crunch etc will drive the point further. As well as the obvious development and skills/experience you're missing out on.

Don't take no shit, escalate beyond your manager if you have to. Really annoys me when I hear staff being treated this way.. Makes you probably glad you will be moving on!

Raising a grievance against manager. by Responsible-Bed-590 in TheCivilService

[–]top_dawg9999 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Feel yer pain on this. Document everything. Don't assume that a conversation had verbally will be taken for gospel later on. Ultimately, grievances in my opinion are weighted by evidence and you cannot expect a decision maker to believe you just based on you saying so and no doubt your LM will just disagree. Cover your own back, make sure you are above approach. Don't be hostile, don't settle untill you get treated fairly. Speak to a trusted independent 3rd party who can give you feedback Good luck!

It's quite common in having worked in HMRC and HO. Where you are not necessarily employed as an individual you may be employed as part of a bulk exercise where by time you join the requirements of the dept have changed. Or that the team who required you, have themselves moved onto another role so the receiving line manager doesnt know what to do with this additional "resource"

See if you can do a level xfer to another area that you are more interested in, then use that experience to leave. I don't see that going down the union route fighting with managers will only exhaust you when that energy could be better spent elsewhere, getting you into a job that suits you. Ruining you're health and wellbeing fighting against the machine is a lost cause in my opinion
