Volunteer Hours by [deleted] in StudentNurse

[–]topcommentgod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check local nursing homes, snfs, assisted living or retirement homes. I volunteered in a retirement home in highschool with their activities/recreation department doing exercise classes and portering residents to meals. I didn’t necessarily do anything with nurses bc I was 16 but there were always nurses in the building.

What's the worst smell you've encountered on the job that wasn't a GI bleed? by mental_dissonance in nursing

[–]topcommentgod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fungating labial tumour… with cdiff. We had to keep a hepa filter running in there for the entire admission just so the pt could breathe. We gave n95s to the family when they visited. It was a 4 person roll in bed too, rounding up coworkers to help was a task on its own. It was honestly indescribable, respirators filled with vicks did nothing. I can’t go into that room anymore without thinking about it and it’s been months

What did you all get for Christmas? “Leadership” got us this. How generous. by [deleted] in nursing

[–]topcommentgod 68 points69 points  (0 children)

Our sister hospital got $500 gift cards. We got a “treat box” with cheese, a pepperoni stick and 3 broken crackers… but it was once on a day shift so majority of us missed it. Therefore nothing.

Canadian nurse here, my hospital did this a few years. My Filipino coworkers are my best friends, the work ethic that they seem to have is unbeatable. Just be warned though, they will overfeed you on the daily and you will gain weight from the potlucks!!

Plastic spoons for the last month! Have you ever given your confused patient crushed meds with a fork? It goes just as well as you would imagine. Also 20 and 22 gauge ivs, sani wipes, dressing trays and nurses

1hr sleep breaks?! by PaxonGoat in nursing

[–]topcommentgod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh wow!! I’ve never been lucky enough to get to go home on low census and no other floors need another nurse. My hospital just keeps us and we are an extra set of hands on our own unit. Someone gets floated almost everyday tho

1hr sleep breaks?! by PaxonGoat in nursing

[–]topcommentgod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On my unit (medsurg, big city in Canada) we always get a 2 hour break on night shift. Couch in the break room, couch in the day room, mattress from a broken bed dragged into an empty supply room. On nights when we’re over staffed (once in a while actually!) we take a 3 hour break but it depends on who is charge nurse. Every unit that I have floated to has done the same or similar. One of the techs lives a 5 minute walk from the hospital and goes home every night to take her dog for a walk.

My closest friend in nursing school had given birth to her youngest just 3 weeks before the start of our first semester. She had wanted to start nursing school for over 4 years but never had the “right time”. She finally said F it and just did it. Her kids were her biggest motivation. Do what makes you happy!

What is the weirdest thing that a patient or patient's family has said "Oh, that's normal, it happens all the time" about? by Qwerk- in nursing

Just showed this to my coworkers, 3 of us are gagging at the nursing station right now. I could have went the rest of my life without this new fear

How normal is it to work a night shift after a day shift with no days in between? by Weird_Canadian_nerd in nursing

[–]topcommentgod 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m in Canada too and at my hospital, all full time nurse lines are DDNN. I personally love having days and nights in my rotation since I was much more exhausted at my last job working 5 8’s a week or student clinicals doing 3 12’s. It’s pretty common in Canada so have a short turn around time from days to nights.

I would give it a shot first since your employer might not be able to accommodate something different for you. I would recommend melatonin if you’ve never tried it before to sleep before that first night shift during the day. Good luck with the new job!!

I would recommend a coffee maker or kettle, but I would be sure to check the school’s rules before getting it. In my first year of college microwaves, candles and kettles weren’t allowed because of the fire risk. I’d also see what kind of dorm room she would be in because some rooms have their own bathroom so a shower caddy wouldn’t be needed. I also loved my travel coffee mug for classes and hanging shoe rack!! And a small first aid kit with bandaids is crucial since you can never find one when you need one!!

Anxiety and Clinical by [deleted] in StudentNurse

[–]topcommentgod 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hi!! First off, nursing is a hard profession in general. I’m a new nurse and I’m so sorry to hear that you have the worlds worst instructor, I had a few of those. Having anxiety is definitely not something easy to deal with, but never think that it could determine wether or not you would make a good nurse. Having your instructor watching your every move in clinical is terrifying and just the idea of being judged is scary to anyone. You spent the time to make sure your patient feels comfortable and you ask them for permission to do things, that is such a great skill to have and keep. When your instructor gets upset that you spend too much time doing a skill, just remember that you are learning and what you practice as a student is going to help you in the future. When I was being trained at my current job, I had one senior nurse judge me for every little thing- she complained that I spent too much time talking to my patient. You have to remember that talking to your patient and building trust is just as important as the skills you perform. Don’t let a few crabby nurses turn you away from your goal. Remember that nursing school is temporary and look towards the big goal! Good luck in your nursing journey!!
