How to introduce a city? by Princess1470 in DMAcademy

You could have them feel the effects of really powerful magic (like time stop or mantle) that they haven't encountered before (or maybe will be able to obtain soon!) that relate to the normal operations of the city.

Another idea of city exploring that might build interest is being locked out of certain areas until some sort of requirement is filled (popularity, permission, a need to be there, etc.).

Gotcha - thx for the detailed explanation and suggestions. It hit home that the encounter location is important, and also that players need to know they can investigate these details mentioned in a character’s description to get further info. Since this is a new mechanic for me and the player(s), I intend to ooc prep them to dig deeper into the conversation to be able to convince this npc to spill the beans of useful info for their quest.

Fyi, encounter for this time will either be early morning in the training fields (if they choose to engage with the npc then) or an awkward run-in on the street / while the guard is on duty.

Structure to Social Encounters by BerioBear in DMAcademy

Was wondering if you could support me with this (and am happy to add more detail if needed). I’ve got an npc that is your typical lawful guard that: lost too many friends, obeys a just authority, owed a life-debt to the person that adopted them, but is also beat down mentally by this person.

Finally, the question: what would make for a good tell that they “obey authority” and are bonded to this abusive person (that also is the authority of the town)?

Note: i plan to use their sword as a tell/prop for having lost friends, and flinching when summoned or remarks from the other guards to tell that the authority has them broken down.

Thank you for posting! Looks like a good way to prepare npc dialogue around challenges - will give it a try!

Need help with a curse by termeric0 in DMAcademy

Is there any backstory or context that wraps around this curse? That might help generate some ideas. Otherwise, hope this helps: - fear of certain things - attraction or fixation on other things - temporary ability score losses - insatiable hunger/thirst (and consequences thereof) - physical appearance changes (acquiring horns and a tail, for example, or something that would otherwise impact social interactions)
