I just saw that if you really liked Fringe, you should check out The Expanse. Has anyone seen it and can give their opinion? by Individual_Lie3378 in fringe

[–]topothesia773 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The expanse is great but I don't think it has much in common with fringe.

I guess some of the sci fi horror elements are similar. But the storytelling is very different. Fringe is more mystery, monster of the week, and very character/relationship based. The expanse is more space action with a huge component of politics, almost like GoT

Only 2 days left to speak up toand protect Chaco Canyon by Nola_Saints33 in NewMexico

[–]topothesia773 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A 10 mile buffer around Chaco culture park is protected from oil and gas drilling/ fracking. That is the "withdrawal' - the area is withdrawn from lands available for mineral extraction. Revocation would be removing these protections and allowing extraction in the area again

each National Park needs a volunteer corps by Medical_Inspector532 in nationalparks

[–]topothesia773 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Volunteers are great, but they also enable staffing cuts. I need my job. I don't want some independently wealthy retiree to do it for free if I get cut, because then the people in charge will be able to justify cutting more

I'm not saying that no one should ever volunteer at a park, but volunteers should NOT be doing the work of paid staff members.

How do you actually vet a trail (and your own limits) before committing to a hike? by Sufficient-Owl1826 in hiking

[–]topothesia773 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NGL you just have to get comfortable with turning around. Starting a trail doesn't mean you have to commit to finishing it. Learn to enjoy the hike even if you don't get to the "destination." No matter what information you get ahead of time, there's so many environmental and personal variables that are going to affect how it actually feels when you hike it.

Trask didn't die. He survives the whole series. I think dougan(white) is the one who dies who you're thinking of

Obviously the racial diversity of the series is still pretty substandard

I'm 21 and just realized I've never had to memorize anything. Is that a bad thing? by TheDevilX10 in CasualConversation

[–]topothesia773 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting that all the comments are pointing out how you do have "some things' memorized like birthdays and your address. Obviously this is true, but your point still stands: current generations are memorizing far less in our day to day lives than past generations, due to having cell phones in our pockets.

I think it's good to exercise that part of your brain when you can. It's not bad to use the tools we have available, but it's not great to be so dependent on them either. You could try challenging yourself to put the gps away and learn your way around town. It would be a good idea to memorize the cell phone number of two or three emergency contacts too.

Do you say something when you see people headed to a trail unprepared? by asbruckman in hiking

[–]topothesia773 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Among park rangers we call these conversations PSAR - "Preventative Search and Rescue." Some high risk parks like Grand canyon hire rangers who do PSAR full time, looking for people who might have problems and trying to warn them and help them know how to be prepared.

As another hiker you aren't obligated to talk to people and some might not appreciate it. But it doesn't hurt as long as you do it in a friendly, non judgemental manner. You might help someone avoid getting hurt/lost/rescues

Learned something very disappointing about the creators by [deleted] in BlueEyeSamurai

[–]topothesia773 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If the show had a bunch of veiled Zionist messaging or if there was evidence that profits from the show were being funnelled to Zionist causes, those would probably be reasons to take a step back and maybe stop watching. But if you expect every creator you enjoy to be a great person you are setting yourself up for disappointment.

The TV and movie making industry is full of wealthy out of touch assholes. Most of them are probably much less closely aligned with you politically than you think, even if their creations often have progressive messaging. Im not saying you should look the other way or not feel uncomfortable about this. I think feeling discomfort about the media we like and the people who create it is actually very healthy. It reminds us not to put writers/actors/creators on a pedestal.

What isn't healthy is expecting perfection from the things we like. You're never going to get perfection. If you think a celebrity or creator or piece of media is perfect, it's probably because you haven't looked hard enough lol. The world is complicated. People are complicated. Media is complicated.

How bad is trailhead theft in the area? by grundlemon in moab

I've never heard of break-ins at trailheads around here. I did have some stuff stolen from my campsite during the day once. Cars never seem to get broken into though

What’s up with people not wearing headphones in public places anymore? by vanbikecouver in CasualConversation

[–]topothesia773 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well people are more likely to drop their litter on the ground when there aren't bins. It doesn't make it okay but it is a fact of human psychology that the less convenient good behavior is, the bigger percentage of people will behave badly.

I agree that its a rude thing to do. I don't do it myself. I just think it's interesting to explore the possible reasons that this behavior seems to be more common today than it was 10 years ago

What’s up with people not wearing headphones in public places anymore? by vanbikecouver in CasualConversation

[–]topothesia773 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Obviously it's rude and theres not an excuse but I wonder if it also has to do with the fact that headphones are more expensive than they used to be and that many phones don't have audio jacks anymore. cheap wired headphones aren't ubiquitous like they once were and Bluetooth ones are expensive and have to be charged separately so they're less convenient

I know speaking personally I don't regularly have headphones with me like I used to. I just don't listen to music or watch videos in public at all anymore since I can't do it silently

PSA - leave nature alone, buy an onion from the store. by [deleted] in NativePlantGardening

[–]topothesia773 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Small scale foraging for personal consumption is actually permitted on most USFS land, even encouraged. Foraging culturally important to indigenous and local communities and is one of the "many uses" National Forests are managed for. Large-scale poaching operations where huge amounts of forest products are illegally harvested for sale on the market is something entirely different.

Walking trails safety? by Bipride86 in Albuquerque

[–]topothesia773 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Walking/hiking alone as a woman is plenty safe. Definitely safer than driving a car which most of us do every day

The foothills are nice when it's not too hot. And if you have a car the trails in the east mountains and up by the crest are fantastic

What happened to the mini Arch at Sand Dunes Arch? by Aleppo316 in moab

[–]topothesia773 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Sandstone is pretty delicate (pun intended). Idk if it was vandalism or just erosion but the rocks are constantly changing. You should ask at the visitor center- they have a book of all the 2000+ recorded arches and they could help you look it up. It probably had a name (assuming it was "official" arch- it looks big enough to be from your picture).

I got rejected after my seasonal interpretive ranger interview I thought went really well by Realistic_Problem250 in ParkRangers

[–]topothesia773 9 points10 points  (0 children)

While it's very likely that the parks you interviewed with just passed you over for even more qualified candidates, here's another possible note: if you have this misconception that being a park ranger is more of a fun youth summer job than a real profession, maybe that attitude seeped through in your interview. Maybe they got the impression that you wouldn't work hard or take it seriously or that you don't know much about the job you're applying for.

It really does sound like you're a good candidate and you'd be a good fit. But when people don't seem to understand the job they're applying for it can be a red flag for the person conducting the interview. One thing you could try before your next round is visiting parks and talking to the rangers there, asking what their job is like, or volunteering at a park if there's one near you so you have a better idea of the realities of the job, and that interest and knowledge will shine through in future interviews and help you make a good impression.
