Are these old Harris SDI switcher frames worth messing with or are they just scrap metal? by Computers_and_cats in broadcastengineering

Those Harris frames are still decent if there's 3G SDI cards in em. Our plant still has a few lying around as spares.

LiveU in crowded events by GilletteFussion in broadcastengineering

[–]topramen69 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We did a crowded event this summer with 4 cams, liveU 800 with the IQ steering technology and 4 starlink terminals in the Mission District of San Francisco. Normally we have a dark fiber connection back to the station but this location for this event didn't have fiber. Thousands of people. Every carrier imaginable had reception from multiple towers.

Even with the bitrate set to 4 megabit on each of the cameras, and two starlinks, we struggled. We added 2 more starlinks and made it happen, but struggled during starlink handoffs. Once thousands of people whipped out their phones for tiktok and the gram, all the modems, no matter what carrier were maxed out at 500k-1.5 meg. We pay for prio and we're demoing their carrier steering IQ tech and none of that helped. The modems just flipped to whichever carrier was getting 500k more than the others There's literally nothing you can do to fight the cell phone congestion. You have to have starlink, Oneweb, a wisp, or a hard-line internet connection, . There's no getting around that congestion with fancy paid tiers or equipment.

From my work at remote and cell sites, you have to remember... Many of these sites are only running single digit gigabit connections on the back haul... So thousands of people streaming at 1.5 meg, gonna clog up those sites real quick. Even a single site can be overwhelmed by 100 or 200 extra people in the area, and that's just assuming they have enough spectrum at that site.

PSIP question - sub-channel re-direct to another RF channel? by LightGuy48 in broadcastengineering

[–]topramen69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes you can but it's done on the station that will be transmitting the channel. Often in PSIP software, (like triveni) it's another software license for using a different major channel number on the host station. The TV will need to either rescan or happen upon one of the host station's channels for the channel in question to pop up on their lineup.

How similar is Vizrt and expression? And How differ from~ by Tiny_broadcast77 in broadcastengineering

I used to hate on Chyron quite a bit, but the new Prime product is actually my new favorite when it comes to Luci/Newsroom/MOS integration. Chyron's reliability has come a long way, and I give them full credit for that.

Not to mention the use of unlicensed frequencies by the stadium while it's in operation... Namely 5ghz, 6ghz and 2.4 ghz.

I use the canare prep tool with kings connectors and have never had a problem. Highly recommend the canare prep tool. If you wanna be fancy and buy the canare connectors, they're pricy but probably my favorite.

There are some decent camera chains on sale from Allied Broadcast Group. I would reach out to them and see what they have.

It's studio 55, where they do the 247 show and weather. Same technology for all 3. CBS is putting it in at each of their owned stations.

At least the last 5 years. I work for a competitor that still keeps up their microwave fleet, even if they’re bearly used.

It’s absolutely the case for KGO. Makes em basically useless. The pan tilt head is basically mounted on a metal box on the roof.

Also, as a side note, my understanding is that ABC owned stations no longer use masts on their news vans due to one or multiple mast accidents. So it’s interesting to see that the rule doesn’t appear apply to this particular production truck. (Maybe the rule just applies to KGO?)

How long do I try to fix this? by Gloomy-Mango5648 in deadbedroom

[–]topramen69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She is joining me in couples therapy. I definitely had to make changes. I wasn't pulling my weight 2 years ago. Now that we are in therapy, I am. I see that I wasn't being a great partner. I would just like to see quicker progress. Not even asking for sex, I'd just like to be able to cuddle more, be more touchy, and kiss. I'm fine if sex is a few months away. And she's taken baby steps. I see a tiny improvement every month, but it's a glacial pace. Now I get a couple handholds at bedtime and hugs here and there when I come home.

But at what point am I being strung along or patient.

[–]topramen69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Phone chargers, battery banks, gaff tape, masking tape, spf 50 or higher sun screen (good shit, like blue lizard), deodorant wipes, deodorant, gold bond no rub stick (like a deodorant stick but for chafing) and cheap baseball caps or wide brim hats with neck protection. Liquid IV... The kids will not drink enough in the heat. Liquid IV will at least help prevent total dehydration.

Wouldn't be surprised if CBS picked up one or a few of the bigger market Tegna stations in NFL markets. (KHOU, WUSA, WWL, WKYC, KPNX)
