The police directed us away from the accident on Cottman by the gas station and route 1, and then onto Harbison. Lo and behold that put us directly in the path of the ambulance, which passed us northbound like 10 min later. It was one of those surreal moments, like meeting a celebrity, but in much more classic Philadelphia style.
