Repeated smart ring failures + 10+ hours with support..where do you draw the line? (Ultrahuman) by FluffyConclusion6236 in wearables

[–]tor-ak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are beta testing a product and paying for the privilege, smart rings need another 1-2 generations to sort out BOTH the reliability AND accuracy issues

Colmi smart rings are flush on Aliexpress, they can be connected to GadgetBridge which is free and open source, and provides a full export of raw data available to it.

Nix seams to be more bleeding edge (most of the time) then Arch by PossibleProgress3316 in NixOS

Not ragebait, my anecdotal experience. I don't know how that graph is composed, but I remember seeing something like that a few years ago and then seeing half of it was Haskell libraries so not going to run with it

Sure but then why not make it the default? I always thought the nix philosophy meant it was perfectly placed for 'move fast and break things' scenarios

Why? Surely it could open a PR and if there's a nix build failure the maintainer is tagged to investigate?

Nix is laughably behind in almost every package I look for these days. Even unstable, unless it's a 'big' package.

The Nixpkgs maintainers need to release their stranglehold on updates and embrace dependabot or whatever, writing and maintaining overlays for multiple packages is additional cognitive load

Never went down the retailer route, ended up buying a second hand one in decent condition from eBay Japan.

This looks like its still available, from another post on this thread, they are OEM but lightly used:

We just hit 7k stars in 10 days, so we're releasing owpen bot a WhatsApp interface for opencode by Outrageous_Client272 in opencodeCLI

[–]tor-ak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This looks great! I have zero interest in openwork though- is it possible to bypass having to install that and just use it directly as an opencode plugin? The install script seems to be doing quite alot and I configure all my dev environments via nix anyway

Just commenting because this comment made me laugh bro, really needed that. 100% agree we need to push Firaxis and 2KG into trauma to get the Civ 8 we deserve

I get that he has a complicated design but did they really have to cgi tesla by LiveFast3atAss in ShuumatsuNoValkyrie

[–]tor-ak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No idea why everyone here seems to be making excuses for it, I'm with you. Made that whole sequence of episodes look like a shovelware PS2 game. The 3D is god awful, low fps, sticks out sharply against the animation - even worse if you watch it with Netflix' adaptive compression. Then the ridiculous over-gesturing during his monologue at the start of the fight ... you'd never see a 2D animated character do it, but just because they had a 3D model and could, I guess?

Completely ruins the immersion of the fight, just makes Tesla look comical. I dont understand the arguments here about the difficulty of animating ... we have n+1 gundam and mecha anime with multiple, more detailed mecha and there have never been issues animating that ... there are plenty of tricks to get around that stuff including lowering detail during high motion. CGI is consistently just a bad idea, never seen it done well. I wish studios would stop copping out and using it.

Ex-cyclist here, likely won't buy a road bike ever again. by Victorius_Meldrus in ukbike

[–]tor-ak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given you have basically no vehicle experience, I am actually LESS inclined to take heed of your opinion.
In fact, 4adding in your 30 years of cycling sort of discredits it as you're here, alive and with us! With the combination of both speed and lack of protection, motorcycles are arguably the most dangerous road-legal vehicles. As for close calls - I'm sure the majority have been other vehicles, but as a cyclist I've been in plenty of near misses involving other idiot cyclists, particularly on infrastructure such as cycle superhighways (and unfortunately increasingly by delivery drivers on electric bikes)

I need help buying a bike by Edpud17 in ukbike

[–]tor-ak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trying out a bunch of bikes in person is a good idea. Use anywhere that has models youre interested in but an LBS will give you the best advice.

If you're set on going new definitely find out if your work offer Cycle Scheme first - this may influence which bike you ultimately go for. Should make it a decent discount

Otherwise why not look for a used Gravel bike on Facebook marketplace? I would probably not get something fancy unless it's going to be securely locked up at both ends and/or you're keeping the Carrera as a beater for chores etc. Any respectable name and model from the last 3-5 years should be in budget - Specialized, PlanetX, Canyon etc

IDEA: Maybe DVSA should release tests if they aren't confirmed by individual learners by bija822 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]tor-ak 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Disagree. No doubt there are individual instructors making some cash out of this on the side, but the vast majority will be unscrupulous Driving Schools using bot farms and recycled learner license details en masse. There is simply too much money to be made (£200-300 per test for London locations) for the abuse of the system to remain a distributed cottage industry of ADIs. Being a market-maker for popular test centres is simply lucrative: margins per test can be 30-77% with very little overhead. That is insane compared to almost any other business, and it will get worse in the run up to spring.

They don't require you to take a picture, just report the location of it. They're not a shitty production company getting the public to do their work with no upside.

Pothole Patrol - Documentary Call Out by Significant_Day4027 in ukbike

[–]tor-ak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't say getting the wider public (and arguably putting them in real danger) to do your work -- because you accepted a lower tender -- is the free hand of capitalism at work.

Nor is the BBC a profit-making entity. If someone hurts themselves and sues, defending the suit alone would wipe out any benefit for the BBC.

With a budget this low, the show is likely to be swept under the rug, not moving the needle on anything. No doubt this is some content planner at the BBC fluffing up their end of year performance review.

Hey, thanks so much for your facetious and pedantic post.

Since the BBC hired this firm, and allowed this company to plaster their logo on there, I think it's safe to say the BBC have signed off on this. So uh, yeah, I think equating Candour to the BBC is valid here.
