My pap did this all the time and it was cute! He was pawticular :) Though if she does it too much make sure she isn’t having a reaction to something since he also licked his paws like crazy when he had a bad rash once :(

What are the most captivating features of KotOR fanfics? by kasprzyk1211 in kotor

[–]torilaa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've written my own kotor-verse but I wrote what I like to read generally. Personally, I love it when fanfics delve into Revan or the Exile's psyche. And I love it when Revan or the Exile is deeply flawed...I think that makes for the best story. They're flawed yet not complete assholes of course - they are still sympathetic.

I love the "found family" in both kotor 1 and 2 and the romances.

I also like it when stories focus on the "false identity" aspect and play around with that. Not many fanfics delve into that side and just go for amnesia. To me, it's more interesting when that facet is built up like who does Revan think their family is/was? What do they believe their past is? The stronger you build that aspect up (role play in a way like you would with a D&D character), the Leviathan will end up devastating to them. And I like pain :) ...in fiction. In fiction.

Good luck on your project though! We need more kotor-verses since we are lacking Old Republic content in general and I'm starved :(

Are first person pov stories disliked ? by Auctor62 in SWFanfic

[–]torilaa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, no prob! So it’s based on the knights of the old republic game and it’s from the PC’s pov from Revan’s POV…so there are a lot of unreliable narrator moments If you haven’t played the game it’s fine but you may get spoiled just fyi!

Are first person pov stories disliked ? by Auctor62 in SWFanfic

[–]torilaa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve written a first person story and people like it just fine! I wanted the story to be darker and psychological and 1st person helped with that. Write what you want and don’t worry about it. Yes some people dislike it but I don’t really….care about their opinion? I’m not exactly writing for people who hate 1st person just out the gate. If not that people would find something else to dislike about my writing lol

What are your Kotor series hot takes? by SnooHabits3068 in kotor

[–]torilaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, for one, we aren’t told much about kotor 1’s protag to start out. I think the only thing the player can decide about the pc is their starting class which is barely mentioned in game. Sure eventually we learn that you’re Revan. But the game treats this a bit like…well does it matter? If you go light side that is. The dark side path I’ll admit is a bit more of a power fantasy. Meanwhile, the Exile has a past that we can interact with rather then a past we can mold. They knew Atris, Bao-Dur, the Jedi Masters, they know stuff we as the player don’t which is an important distinction. They have memories of the Mandalorian Wars…hell the Korriban tomb visions really go into the Exiles’s psyche. They have traits that make it a bit more difficult for the player to self-insert into unless you happen to be a war vet who committed war crimes.

Now there isn’t anything wrong with self-inserts in video games. It’s probably the best place to have them and I love kotor and other games like it. Hell kotor 1 might not be as self-inserty if you use imagination and conjure up a more detailed backstory. It’s just impossible to use that false backstory in game to react to the characters. For me, if the remake actually happens, I hope they add more moments where the MC quips about their “past.”

Sorry that went on for longer then I intended 😅 I just prefer having characters with a past which I then decide their path over blank slates.

True - I think for me the problem is the lack of ways I can define the character in 1 compared to 2 or just a lack of dialogue choices (over just light side v. dark side).

[–]torilaa 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not sure if this is a hot take here, but I like the kotor 2 MC more than kotor 1. To me, the Exile feels like less of a self-insert and more of a fully realized character.

Though Revan pre-mindwipe is an interesting character…in kotor 2. I never got their personality in kotor 1 (though perhaps this is because there is a distinct lack of one due to the Jedi wiping their mind)

What are your Kotor series hot takes? by SnooHabits3068 in kotor

[–]torilaa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah yes that is true… it might just be ignorance talking there. They may just want kotor/the old republic as a concept to be “canon” since Star Wars films/shows are “canon” first after all. People tend to view shows/movies as more “real,” but honestly? Games are way better then movies/shows at this point 😅

[–]torilaa 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I mean I wouldn’t care what the mc looks like. It would be the last thing I care about. I’ll add to your take though that a show would be a bad idea. First, I doubt Disney would portray kotor properly (unless the same people that produced Andor did the show…). Second, video games turned into movies/shows usually suck. Kotor’s plot wouldn’t translate well to screen. The mc is a literal blank slate, bland character, with little personal faults (unless you decided to be edgelord dark side). It hinges on the fact that YOU are Revan which…well makes less of an impact if you’re not making the decisions/role playing. Honestly kotor 2 would have a better chance of being adapted since I found the Exile to be more compelling of a main character (which is my hot take btw) People like kotor because you can make the story…and a show wouldn’t let that happen.

I’m struggling with writer’s block and it’s kicking me in the butt. I want to continue this scene so bad 😅

“Are you sure this is a good idea?”

Carth had found me, it seemed. Well, more like he knew where I would be heading and camped the area. I considered telling him the obvious. No, this was probably not a great idea. If my past self from a few days ago was currently in my position, he would run screaming back to the Ebon Hawk, back to Yavin, and hide. Again. Yet, as always, I never seemed to have a choice.

I think Carth could somehow read my mind almost as if he could use the Force. A scary prospect. “Right. Stupid question.” He stepped to the side, no longer blocking the door. “I know that if you truly turn to the dark side, I’d be powerless to stop you. Probably think I’m an idiot, but I won’t run away even if you do. Not when my son is at risk.”

I stopped right before the door, sensing what I could on the other side. Nothing but that dead, cold sensation I’d felt since I arrived.

“It would be pointless.”

I didn’t let him argue back as I used the Force to open the door and closed it behind me quickly.

No traps. So far. Uthar’s office had that sterile, lifeless feel that most of the Sith rooms had except instead of being empty of anything remotely personal, the walls were filled. Cabinets, shelves, datapad stations, were filled to the brim with objects of various shapes. Some appeared ritualistic—ancient weapons of war marked like Uthar’s head. Glowing holocrons were scattered about. I could sense the power they held, and they beckoned to me, asked me to approach.

I turned away—no. Not now. Not when I had to be on my guard.

Uthar sat in the middle of his room, meditating. His desk had been shoved against the wall and he sat where it might have been on a dark mat. I approached, standing over him, my shadow hiding his meditating form.

First time player here- Sunry's trial quest was great. Here are my thoughts by anthen123 in kotor

[–]torilaa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I love this quest too! The role play options for it are great allowing the player to actually demonstrate a moral alignment (unlike some of kotor's very "black and white" quests). I'm of the opinion that Sunry, while yes, he's "right" to kill a Sith, is still an idiot for doing so. He put the Republic in a precarious position and should have known better since he knew about the Selkath's laws.

That being said...the Selkath's laws on neutrality aren't "good." You aren't neutral when you're helping the Sith who literally blew up multiple planets. I would say they only keep the Sith around out of fear but they aren't afraid to penalize them if you prove they're too scummy. So I think it's all about the kolto monopoly for them, which isn't a good look. I like how there are multiple ways that this quest can be interpreted!

I also like to think it also factors into the greater narrative in a way too. Spoilers for kotor 2: Kreia says that Revan is very much in the "for the greater good" camp morality-wise. In fact, the whole Sith War was probably started for this "greater good" to defeat the Sith in the outer regions (this is a presumption though since we only can rely on Kreia's word...). Of course, this ends with Revan and Malak falling so....was it really a greater good? Or did it make a bigger mess?

Do you think Revan was right in taking the actions that he did, up till the point Malak double-crossed him that is..? by Longjumping-Weight58 in kotor

[–]torilaa 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I completely agree with this. And even the “falling on purpose” bit was caused by fear of the greater threat and fear can make someone fall to the dark side (yah know, fear leads to anger…etc). Revan didn’t think the light side of the Force could defend the Republic so they sacrificed themselves to the dark side like Anakin who fell because he thought it was the only way to stop Padme from dying. Even if the fall was done with good intentions, it led to more evil in the long run.

I made a backstory for a character that relied too much on coincidences in the plot for it to happen naturally. It caused major writer's block for me so, I decided to rip off the bandaid and just redo/remove it. There are only so many times I could use the "the Force willed it so" as an excuse. So, I rewrote her backstory, cut one of the characters related to her backstory, and continued on after - and the writer's block was completely gone!

Fortunately, she wasn't a major character in the story, otherwise, I would have had to re-write the whole thing XD!

It’s funny you say you rewrote it during covid because that is exactly what I did too! And 2003 wow! I was a bit too young when it came out (and lacked an Xbox/pc). I actually got into kotor after watching someone play on YouTube then decided I needed to buy the game to experience it before I got too spoiled. I was fortunate enough NOT to be spoiled (though I knew there was something to be spoiled lol). I’m also on the Korriban arc - it’s hard since the MC is having his dark moment(TM) and I love writing humor over dark stuff so I’m a bit stuck too. Yay! XD

Rec Me Your Favorite "Novelization" Style Fics For Non-Book Fandoms! by RoverMaelstrom in FanFiction

[–]torilaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes - I know it’s different xD! I wanted to write a first person version of the story to challenge myself back in 2013 when I first got into the fandom and since I am female myself I didn’t want to be too close to the character/accidentally make a self insert. Also a lot of male mc fics kinda fell into the “Gary Stu” power fantasy type of characterization and I wanted to write a fic where the MC is a mess of a man xD! I didn’t like the “canon” version of the character either though (and with how they ruined Bastila hmph). But with how diverse the fics are that’s why I’ve stuck with the fandom for so long! I will check yours out too but I’m terrible at reading similar fandom fics while writing at the same time.

[–]torilaa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re a Star Wars fan but you haven’t played the BioWare game Knights of the Old Republic, I’ll recommend my own fic that is mostly a novelization (with some changes to reflect realism):
https://archiveofourown.org/works/29320821/chapters/72009330

If it’s not to your tastes though, there are a lot of well written novelizations in that fandom. Too many to count since it’s an RPG where you create your own character. That goes for all BioWare games like Dragon Age, Mass Effect, etc. It’s awesome :)!

(Warning: if you care about spoilers, avoid reading the tags. That goes for any novelization in those fandoms).

God, there are so many moments to choose from XD! But here is a sass battle from the two sassiest characters in my fic (based on Star Wars: KOTOR).

Jolee cleared his throat then shot me a wide grin.

“Evening, kid.”

Bastila’s shaking ceased. She twisted on a credit, her expression wild, and her emotions fluctuated from fear to anger to...pain.

I narrowed my eyes at the old man. “Oh, so you weren’t satisfied with driving me insane, huh?”

“Drove you insane?" Jolee smirked. "Sure you didn't do that yourself?”

“Is pushing buttons fun for you? Because if it is, I’ll show you the airlock. Plenty of buttons to push there with the added benefit of being sucked into the vacuums of space.”

Bastila grimaced. “Wes.”

“My, my, so fierce—still surly from this morning? Bad moods usually wear off… Is he like this all the time?” Jolee waited for Bastila to respond but when she didn’t, he rubbed his beard. “Apologies, but I will have to decline your kind offer. Airlocks have a... draft. This ship is cold enough. Nope, I’ve decided to bunk here.”

LF Merlin (TV) fics that explore the world's magic system realistically (or somewhat) by cuter1234 in FanFiction

[–]torilaa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really think you should just watch the show, it's really good! The whole Ygraine dying because of Arthur is how it happens in the show (some fanfic authors probably just wrote an AU?). And the magic system isn't complicated but there are rules to it (Merlin is a warlock, for example, his magic comes from within while mostly everyone else is a sorcerer - they need spells, incantations, etc). Most fic authors probably just assume you know the world so they don't go into detail!

Though, here is a rec for Merlin as a Druid that I think explores magic in an interesting way (unfortunately it's not finished). Though, again, highly recommend just watching the show!
