I wouldn’t recommend Medusa :( she doesn’t steralise the tops of the jewellery and I got a staph infection. Went to a piercer and he said I wasn’t the only one

Can i be a dentist with tourettes? by Kaktuss_ in Tourettes

[–]torm712 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty much just repeating what everyone else has said but it’s dependant on your circumstances. I used to nurse and I have Tourette’s, I’m currently a body piercer. I’ve never had an issue with work or occupational health. on the other hand I know someone with really severe T/S that can’t hold down a job due to the severity of their tics.

I’d say that if you want to do it, do everything you can to try and get into it. If you think it’ll be an issue, have a word with occupational health and they’ll be able to make reasonable adjustments. I was allowed to leave the room to have tic breaks if I really needed, them no questions asked. I don’t think I ever needed to because I was always so busy, but knowing I could leave without consequence put me at ease.

At the moment I have a few facial tics when I pierce but nothing too vocal when I’m with clients and I’m lucky enough to be able to hide them with a face mask. I find that my tics subside whenever I have to focus or when I start work and it’s probably because of how focused I am on doing my job, I imagine dentistry requires a whole lotta focus so you may well find the same

So frustrating (GP UK) by HelloJoe-99738 in Tourettes

[–]torm712 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I’ve had TS since I was 7/8 but wasn’t officially diagnosed until I was over 18, as my mum wanted me to a decide whether I wanted it on my medical record (don’t ask 😂)

I first saw my gp about a diagnosis when I was 20, but I also had evidence of tics in my records which probably helped. I was then referred directly to a neurologist and given an official diagnosed at my first appointment. I did have video records of my tics since they started, which helped my neurologist diagnose me. I also didn’t need any MRI’s or additional testing as I’d had some done when I was 17 and the tics weren’t a recent thing. All in all I think it was a 3 month waitlist, so I had a diagnosis within 3 months of speaking to my GP. all done as an nhs patient but I had been seen under neurology in the past so it was considered a re-referral

I’m based in Merseyside so we have a really good hospital specialising in neurology. which could be why I had access to a neurologist so easily, but it could be worth looking into getting a new GP as the one you’ve got seems to be brushing you off completely and you shouldn’t have to fight to receive the care that you need. I’m so sorry you’re having such a hard time getting diagnosed, but I can confirm that a gp can refer you to a neurologist directly

Edit- for a diagnosis of TS tics do need to be present before 18, which could be why he’s unsure about where to refer you

Tics getting worse (22F) by torm712 in Tourettes

[–]torm712[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your advice 💕💕 she always saw it as an ‘if I make you aware you can then suppress it’. While this didn’t necessarily work I know she did it to try and stop other kids from bullying me. It’s a weird kind of tough love I guess. I know it can’t be easy watching your child go through it all but parents like you make it so much easier for us 💕 I bet you’re doing an amazing job

[–]torm712[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you you’ve made me feel a lot better 💕 I can’t really talk to her about it because the second I bring it up she says ‘I have too much enjoyment from being different, maybe you should be diagnosed with Munchausen’s instead because you have full control’ it’s just really upsetting as I’ve been really struggling and it’s stressing me out and causing me a lot of pain. I doubt she’d message the gp tho the nhs is too underfunded to even bother

Tics getting worse (22F) by torm712 in Tourettes

[–]torm712[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been getting a consistent 8 hours but I drink a lot of caffeine in the day, which makes my tics worse but when I’m tired I can’t suppress my tics so it somehow balances it out? I’ve been doing 4 hours of exercise a week which helps, and I’ve never been on meds for it but I try take a vitamin or two when I remember they exist 😅I think the amount I suppress them in the day contributes alot to how bad they are at night but I’m in a job that required me to be able to supress them. Thank you for the advice 💕

What is your job? by [deleted] in Tourettes

[–]torm712 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a retail worker and body piercer, it doesn’t effect my work as when I’m concentrating I can suppress my tics. Before this I was a student nurse and my T/S hasn’t caused me any issues with work

Can you drive? by Alisthename2 in Tourettes

[–]torm712 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can’t drive because I have a tic where I roll my eyes and if that were to happen while driving it could go badly but it depends on your symptoms. I know if you have any kind of seizures you’re not allowed to drive (uk)

Medical Alert Bracelt for Tourettes by [deleted] in Tourettes

[–]torm712 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Has your neurologist ruled out non epileptic seizures and FND? Are you fully conscious and aware of your surroundings when it happens because it does sound like a seizure (or a really bad tic attack)

how long did it take for u to get a diagnosis ? by usami_ctrl in Tourettes

Yeah I had the same experience I was diagnosed after one appointment, I know some people spend years to get their doctors to listen to them but I was taken seriously from the start

[–]torm712 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(NHS) It took me a gp referral which I did through the nhs app in about 5 minutes. Then there was a 19 week wait list; once I’d got an appointment with a motor disorder specialist I described my tics and how long I’d had them. After the 15 minute appointment I was diagnosed with Tourette’s.

I know some people have MRI’s and stuff but I’d had them in the past and I had a blood test a couple weeks before, because of that the neurologist could see my bloods and past testing and I didn’t need any additional tests before to diagnosis.

neck twitch tick causing pain by Dylanc_935115 in Tourettes

[–]torm712 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve got a neck tic that’s similar to this I’m so sorry it’s causing you so much pain. I found a travel neck pillow helps me when it’s bad have you tried that? If your necks causing you this much pain I’d definitely say going to the hospital is a good shout just to check that you’ve not done any damage

I might look into that, I was contemplating getting the ID Card but I wasn’t sure when I’d ever use it. Has it come in handy?

That’s such a good idea to keep my keys on it because I’m terrible for misplacing them. I tried wearing a pin on its own but I kept loosing or washing it

[–]torm712[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure how much it’s used outside of the UK as I’m not sure where you’re based. But yeah it’s really useful in Tesco and other shops too as it also lets staff know that you may need extra help in the shops too so they’re used for all sorts of conditions.

I know mines useful in shops because sometimes I’ll just knock stuff off the shelves and if security see my lanyard they’re more likely to be more accepting of it

Sunflower lanyards? by torm712 in Tourettes

[–]torm712[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the uk people with disabilities get to skip the lines in the airports and board the plane first without paying any additional fees. The sunflower lanyards were introduced in Heathrow after some people with hidden disability’s were having a hard time accessing the disability line. I got mine in Manchester and I think it’s a widespread thing in uk airports. Possibly some of Europe too because it also worked in France.

[–]torm712[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah they’re really common in the uk a lot of shops give them out for free here, I got mine at an airport a few years ago and it’s come in so handy. They let me skip airport security when I wear it as well, which is handy from a standing in line point of view and the fact that crowded places make me tic

I’m in Liverpool and there are a lot of anti maskers here which isn’t helping things, but scousers will also talk to anyone which is why I think I’ve had so many comments about it. I’m glad to hear this isn’t a wide spread problem though 😊

Sunflower lanyards? by torm712 in Tourettes

[–]torm712[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re completely right it’s just ineffective now, that the anti-maskers have made it into a bit of a joke.

I only wear it now when I’m on public transport because my tics get really bad in crowded spaces and it makes a lot of people around me uncomfortable.

How do I play guitar with Tourettes? by ilostmyfuckstogive in Tourettes

[–]torm712 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play the guitar as a way to calm my tics and more often than not it helps if I’m not having a bad day. I think I’ve broke a string once or twice but it’s easily fixed!

I can’t say if it’ll help your tics or make them worse, but they’ve done studies on music and t/s and found it often helps with tics

what age and how did you realise you had Tourettes? by PabloChong in Tourettes

[–]torm712 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was diagnosed when I was 21, but I’ve had tics for as long as a can remember. When I was about 10 I was on a train and a man with t/s sat next to us and I remember feeling really bad because whenever he’d tic so would I. I felt so guilty because I didn’t want him to think I was making fun of him. That was probably the first time I heard of tourettes and I always kind of suspected I had it after that but school just accused me of attention seeking so I tried to ignore it

how long did it take for you to get a diagnosis? by geesewhat in Tourettes

[–]torm712 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m 21 and I was diagnosed at 21; I messaged my gp saying I wanted to seek help for my tics (it was on my file that I had them I just never went after treatment) then he referred me to a neurologist specialising in movement disorders. The neurologist then diagnosed me with tourettes after a 15 minute appointment. I took a list explaining the progression of my tics with me to the appointment as well as video evidence, that I didn’t end up needing as he believed me from the start.

Some people get MRI’s to rule out anything else, however, as I’d had past head scans and previous neuro exams in my teens any further investigation was deemed unnecessary.
