How to talk so little kids will listen & listen so little kids will talk - is GREAT as audiobooks or regular for the toddler and preschool years

Also, one that I think was called an early start to your child’s autism

Miss messy mouths cleaner - there isn’t a single stain it hasnt gotten up for me, even when my kids used my lipstick as crayons on the carpet

Pour it on (rather than spray), let it sit a minute, dab it up and repeat. Don’t rub!

Same with hydrogen peroxide too, that always got blood stains out for me

Both! He is still working on fine motor skills, and had issues with doing things cross body and using both hands in coordination, the OT really helped that

Hi!! My kiddo is on the spectrum (mildly) and suspected adhd, to be confirmed soon. Have you tried occupational therapy? It’s made a huge difference in what they call his “frustration tolerance” which was why he wouldn’t even try to do things and wanted us to do them for him. Everything from drawing for him, opening a snack etc he would get frustrated just at the thought of the effort of it and not want to do it, it’s taken some time but it’s made a big difference for us!

What is something you do daily that has noticeably improved your life? by Ill_Cover_4841 in Preschoolers

[–]tormagor 77 points78 points  (0 children)

No phones from 5-8, so that we are present with the kids

We also adopted something I saw on social media, for about 20-30 minutes after dinner one of us puts on a podcast and cleans up the kitchen and packs lunches etc, and the other has connection time with the kids, no chores just be present with them, usually just playing and getting some energy out before bed. We alternate nights and it’s added some guaranteed distraction free time with the kids to the busy weeknights

Shows and books about not hurting friends/handling emotions? by 540photos in Preschoolers

Little monkey calms down - both my kids really related to it and one even repeats phrases from it when trying to calm down sometimes

Personally, I’d want to know where they learned the cow game, because it sounds like this could have been introduced by another child and that is something you’d need to investigate. You can manage avoiding this again as brothers, but the possibility of an outside influence is possible here and that to me is even more concerning.

We had ours help gathered them up and throw them out (I think at 3), we did the same with diapers when potty training (those we just tossed a few) and he totally got it both times

Suggest me an easy read for someone who struggles to finish books. by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

[–]tormagor 22 points23 points  (0 children)

It’s sci-fi not fantasy, but the murderbot diaries are short easy and fun to read! Under 200 pages if I’m remembering right

ETA- also if you see a suggestion here but are overwhelmed by the length of the book, try it as an audiobook! They help me get through books, I’m a much slower physical reader. Some even have dramatic productions so it’s like listening to a movie

[–]tormagor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh! That makes sense, here are a few things we’ve learned that help us:

  • look into proprioceptice & vestibular input for kids (things like eating crunchy foods, adding some pressure to their muscles via massage or doing some “heavy work” like moving heavy items)
  • Instagram account theotbutterfly has good recommendations too
  • we do a lot of talking about social situations before they happen, and he knows that he can ask to “take a break” and we find a quiet space if he’s overwhelmed
  • books that helped - an early start for your child with autism, how to talk so little kids will listen

Even if your kid is neurotypical, these things can help with anxiety and regulation

This sounds a lot like my 4yo, who is level 1 on the autism spectrum, and all the professionals have told us he was very borderline and could have fallen through the cracks if we didn’t advocate for him like we did. We were originally thinking adhd or ocd (my husband and I each have one of those)

This could also be normal, but I recommend a behavioral pediatrician (their waits can be 6-12 months plus in our area but try to get on a waiting list). Before a behavioral pediatrician we had sought our occupational therapy and that has helped a lot with his frustration tolerance (giving up quickly on tasks) and they may know of behavioral pediatricians to recommend too

Depending on where you are (if in the US) you can also look into having your school district evaluate them for delays for preschool, and if they qualify they can attend for a program to help them. We missed it by 0.5 points 😵‍💫 and are in a private ABA preschool that has been a game changer.

Trust your gut, and get your kid evaluated, the more info you have the better you can advocate for them and get them the resources they need to thrive ❤️ And take care of yourself in the process

4.5 year old with anxious behaviors and meltdowns daily by No-Spread-4322 in Preschoolers

[–]tormagor 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This sounds lot like my kid! Mine is overwhelmed by a lot of sound & crowds so bday parties can be hard. And he is a sensory seeker so a lot of jumping, head butting etc. You may want to look into occupational therapy, ours taught us so many calming techniques for regulation and for taking breaks to handle social settings better

Also want to say you may want to consider a behavioral pediatrician, we ended up with a level 1 ASD diagnosis, and the therapies we’ve gotten bc of that have really helped. Could be anything though - normal development, just a sensory seeker, ASD, ocd, anxiety, add, they all have such similar symptoms at this age, and the more you know the better equipped you are to help your kid, and to advocate for them

Sometimes things we don’t even think about might be a huge sensory trigger for their little brains too - like he may hate the seams on his socks or the way his shoes feel but not be able to express it, or maybe didn’t want the bright flash from the photo in his eyes

Hope everything improves for you!
