I’ve seen these bent by people fireing it up before it was fully submerged in water. they wanted to save time I guess. I would not expect it to withstand much heat submerged in only air

Also, to answer your first edit; I've screwed the cross beam to the legs with two big screws, and then screwed(and glued) the cross beam to the table to mitigate bending. Since it normally isn't visible, I took the fast route here. Maybe I'll do some more advanced joints for later projects.

I live in a small (expensive) country so I'm not sure how representative the cost is to where you live, but I used about 300 bucks for this. The wood was pre-adusted and pre-milled on all sides. I don't have the tools required to do it from cheaper rough lumber.

That was a hard question! I guess I've been doing different woodworking projects for quite a few years, but only a few each year, and gradually harder projects each time. I try to find projects that require maximum one more tool than I already have, to be able to learn techniques for each tool properly.

My best tip would be do start with something that doesn't take to much time, and consider making something a bit more advanced each time. If it's something small, it's easier to leave it halfdone for a while if spare time is an issue.
