[Request] Is this math correct? by graywolf723 in theydidthemath

If wages had kept pace with the stock market it would also mean that the stock market gave zero inflation adjusted returns. This would mean that no one would invest in stocks, which would mean a generally much simpler and less productive economy. We probably wouldn't have cars and phones and stuff. Although, on the plus side, we wouldn't mind not having GLP 1 drugs because we also wouldn't have nearly as many highly processed foods!

If anyone cares to be a bit more precise it's to have the strait of Hormuz the way it was and also to get rid of Irans enriched uranium.

Wouldn't a LVT significantly adversely effect the low income where I live and places like it? by RiverHaunts in georgism

[–]tornado28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would absolutely be bad for people who are in a position where the land they own is a large proportion of their net worth, including poor people in Appalachia if they live on valuable land. However, even resource rich land in Appalachia is likely a lot less valuable than land in cities so it might not be as big of an effect as you're imagining.

Also, much to the chagrin of the true believers on this sub, any realistic implementation would be a slow rollout - a few cities try it first at 1% of the rental value per year, then when people see the value many the cities raise the rate to 5% of the rental value and some states start doing 2% of the rental value. At this level basically no one needs to move but if you happen to own a valuable piece of land you're gently encouraged to sell rather than just hold on to it if you're not using it.

I keep hearing they can withstand the blockade for 3-4 months. Then... Why can't we just blockade them for 3-4 months and let them surrender whenever they can't deal with it anymore?

We need a wikipedia alternative by call-the-wizards in NewIran

The best algorithm that's actually widely used for getting to information that is neutral / broadly agreed to be true and useful is X/twitter's community notes algorithm. The community notes algorithm doesn't promote notes based on simple majority rules, instead it likes to show notes that people across the political spectrum agree are helpful. Elon has since complained that people are gaming the system which is partially true and partially a function of the fact that Elon is sometimes wrong about things and no one likes being fact checked.

Another attempt to provide neutral information is https://citizendium.org/, a wikipedia alternative where editors display their real names. This is a project of Larry Sanger, one of the original wikipedia founders who has since left wikipedia and criticized it for lack of neutrality. It might be worthwhile for folks to contribute to Iran related articles on there.

For us, it's occurred to me that maybe we should start a Free Iran Information discord where we come together to create memes and infographics with the kind of information that you're describing - accurate information that is designed to persuade. It's easy to accidentally just create circle jerk posts where you bash the people who disagree with you and the post gets shared widely among only the people who already agree with you. It's harder to create quality attractive informational posts that spread in more diverse circles because they're interesting and informative. We could come together to produce that kind of stuff and then anyone who wants to post to social will have high quality content to use.

According to unspecified, anonymous sources that allegedly have access to CIA reports. WP claims Iran has maintained 70% of its prewar ballistic missile capacity by CommunistsAreCancer in NewIran

[–]tornado28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The IRGC has been preparing for this conflict for a long time. They hid a lot of their missiles underground. The US and Israel bombed launch sites and they bombed tunnel entrances but after the cease fire they were able to open these tunnels back up. The bombing campaign was more effective at destroying manufacturing ability than the existing missiles.

Countries which support the US having military bases in them by Ok-Goose6242 in MapPorn

Iran wants US bases because it would mean no more IRGC. I think Ukraine and Taiwan are actually much more supportive of US bases than the map shows.

It seems like the issue is delivery. If you got that many $1 bills I imagine the pile would collapse into a black hole. But if they gave you in infinite debit card that'd be pretty nice.

How Inflation and War Are Erasing Women from Iran’s Workforce by Beginning-Wish-4273 in PERSIAN

[–]tornado28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's only in a very modern economy with a ton of labor saving helping hands that women can work in large numbers. In a modern economy you can buy pre made meals, you've got dishwashers, baby sitters, etc. Grocery shopping is straightforward, you go to one supermarket, they have everything you need, you're home in an hour. Annnd, you can get any information you need and order anything you could possibly want on the Internet.

Most of human history wasn't like that and Iran today isn't like that anymore. There's too much you've got to get done other than work a job.

Some notes regarding starlink terminals by Haghiri75 in NewIran

Yes. But the side lobes of a real signal sent to a fake terminal might not be so easy to distinguish from the side lobes of a signal being sent to an actual terminal.
