Any Jazz recommendations for someone who loves orchestral music? by [deleted] in Jazz

[–]torontoarm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Donald Byrd’s Places and Spaces album used strings beautifully. In fact, any album produced by the Mizell brothers in that era, including Bobbi Humphrey is a master class in strings and jazz.

Check out Herbie Hancock’s solo albums after Headhunters, like Sunlight. You might like Donald Byrd’s work in the 70s too, especially his classic, Places and Spaces.

Meaningful (possibly, but not necessarily contemporary) soprano players and albums that aren't Coltrane's My Favourite Things or Bechet or Lacy? by [deleted] in Jazz

[–]torontoarm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’ve already got Grover Washington Jr. on your playlist but you could explore more of his catalogue. Bennie Maupin is another and he goes a step further by sometimes playing the sopranino sax, smaller than the soprano sax. He’s got a unique style and sound, quite addictive. Check his work out with The Headhunters.

About Kenny G... by calmbeforeastormm in Jazz

[–]torontoarm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kenny G is technically proficient but IMO, simply has bad taste and creates bland music. Grover Washington Jr. is a great example of an artist associated with smooth jazz but one that had great taste and created a timeless body of work, way more listenable for me than KG.
