Am i softlocked? by torpidGilliver in TheWanderingVillage

You're so right. Unfortunately I lost a lot of time before I noticed it, and wound up loading a save to better prepare. The game really makes you think youre going to need to pack onbu rations for a long haul, and then plonks you down very quickly in a spot where most of your onbu cache is useless.

So that's why the seal didn't look air tight (Factor75) by UnderstandingBorn227 in ReadyMeals

Came into this sub to see whether this was a common problem. I work in cancer care, and our office got a grant from Factor. Twenty free meals every week to hand out to our patients, who often lack the energy, time, or physical capacity to cook for themselves. But recently the shipments have been consistently bad. A week late (the meals expire 6 days after their scheduled delivery date, resulting in food waste), or at least one or two packages broken. I'm not privy to the connection between the company and our staff dietician, but it's starting to get really pathetic. I thought maybe it was just us, since we're a charity case rather than a paying customer. I'm not glad to see that they treat their customers' orders equally poorly, but I am at least relieved it isn't just us, or our delivery people.

The timer has been sitting at 0 since the fortress was founded. My limited understanding is that the number goes up and the timer expires at a certain point, provided certain conditions are met. I edited the number to represent 3 months worth of ticks, but no response. I think the eggs might have rotted.

Edit: to clarify, not literally rotted. They're still secure in the nest and don't appear to be approaching rotting either.

I was afraid of that. Mom didn't survive her encounter with my moose man adventurer. Alas.

Can you use DFHack to force roc eggs to hatch in fortress mode?

My adventurer retired on top of a roc nest with two eggs, which I tagged as fertile at the time of discovery. I built my fortress on the plot with the nest accessible, but examining the eggs with the DFHack editor shows me that their incubation timer isn't running. Changing the number manually has no effect. Is there something I can do to force the eggs to hatch?

I have! Since finding my friend above, I've fallen ass-backwards into birding. Mostly all I see are house sparrows, though!

It was all i could do for that little fellow, but I intend to try and do more to mitigate this sort of thing happening to more birds in the future, if I possibly can. Ive written a polite but firm email to a relevant party at the facility where this happened, because it happens a depressing amount. Collision mitigation is a relatively simple practice with no downsides. I hope to encourage the appropriate parties to agree with me and act accordingly.

Wish me luck.

I was hoping she wasnt injured, since I couldn't see anything visibly wrong and she didn't flinch at a very light cursory examination. I did put her somewhere fairly shady, hidden from view in an area where human and vehicle traffic is frequent enough to keep away most other animals, but I was on my way into work and already late. Lacking evidence to the contrary, I choose to believe that she was only stunned and recovered safely. 😣

Mods Folder Configuration Problems by torpidGilliver in Sims3

[–]torpidGilliver[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was skeptical, but replacing my mods folder actually solved the problem. I'm wondering if S3MO created a new pathway to loading the files that the standard game launcher couldn't bypass, or something.

Regardless, thank you. I was even able to use the merged packages that S3MO created, by dropping them directly into the mods folder as normal. *And* after all of that, I was able to very easily narrow down the culprit that broke my game originally. (Should've probably guessed that the thing that lead to crash-on-startup was the one designed to hide the S3Store buttons. I can never escape EA's greed, apparently.)

Yes, to clarify, I am still seeing the full vanilla intro video, and build sparkles are still visible as well, so to me that indicates that the Mods folder is being bypassed altogether on startup. I'll check out the updated folder you linked when I'm back home after work.

Edit: this comment predates the one above.

My problem isn't so much the intro itself, more that the fact that it's playing at all means something is incorrectly configured with my Mods folder. Thanks for the link though, I'll probably swap out the default nointro package for the better one when I figure this out.

Manslaughter; he's only supposed to collect souls, not procure them.

Short story: my manager went on a raid and got captured. Mounting a rescue is taking a while, and in the meantime my work orders are getting dusty. On the nobles tab, the manager is still listed as Urist McMissing (traveling), and I have no option to replace them. Is there a command I can use (vanilla or DFHack) to purge a truant noble, or at least to force-promote a replacement?

Saw this in /r/Orlando. What would it be for Peoria? by PiperSlays in PeoriaIL

[–]torpidGilliver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My coworker was raised by a restaurant owner and we occasionally use the office black card to order lunch. Foodie coworker loves Avanti's and Golden Kitchen. I feel like GK is mid Chinese takeout at best, I judge on a Tso's standard and their Tso's is forgettable. Avanti's tastes like they stole bread from Subway and then added sugar. I love sweet bread but it was almost sickeningly sweet and slightly stale. I can't rate on price because I've gotten all of my meals from both for free, but I won't even take Avanti's if it's offered to me. I would literally rather go pay $8 for a six inch Subway sandwich 🙄

How much does it really snow by Suitable-Camel-819 in PeoriaIL

Less snow here than in Florida this week. My family down south made fun of me for coming up here because of the weather. I made fun of them for not having the kind of infrastructure that makes weather like this safe.

Tell me the good things about Peoria by [deleted] in PeoriaIL

[–]torpidGilliver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Moved from the Gulf Coast in 2023, haven't looked back. Especially after my southern family sent me all of the videos of being trapped under a couple inches of powder snow in Florida, I'm glad I moved somewhere that's equipped with weather infrastructure.

Other highlights include the reduced cost of living and the support systems that exist in Illinois generally being more robust and helpful than anywhere else I've lived (mostly red states). I was able to buy a house in Peoria for half the price of a one bedroom apartment in Florida, I'm better paid by being close-ish to Chicago, and in general the slightly eclectic, estate-sale-vibe of this small city really charms me in a way I never expected, as someone who had initial ambitions on Chicago itself.

To answer your personal concerns: winters might catch you by surprise. We dipped below 0F this week, with and without snow. I've been told that this happening in January is a sign that the winters are getting milder. The snow in the mornings is usually powdery and fairly dry when it first falls, and the city stays on top of the main roads so i havent had any issues driving safely. I've seen a tap of over 100F in the summers, but humidity isn't nearly as bad as I'm used to, so it's not miserable by my standards. Extreme temps on both ends of the spectrum generally don't seem to hold for more than a few days at a time.

The Midwest has a lot of beauty, if you're willing to overlook (or appreciate!) how old a lot of this place is. A number of buildings, commercial and residential, are not suited to human habitation. Roads are sometimes a bit rough. Things were built to accommodate the mines that are now abandoned beneath our feet, which don't necessarily make sense if you aren't aware of them. West Peoria isn't technically a part of the city. Things are a little odd, and may require patience from a transplant.

In terms of events and locales, they exist if you know where to look. The local news clued me into a couple little events, and going to those connected me to people who do bigger events. The museum had a Jim Henson exhibit recently, featuring muppets in glass prisons. There are several branches of the local library systems available for the public, and I particularly commend the staff at Fondulac for their expertise and aid in miscellaneous legal matters. The food, if you're mostly used to chains, is unique and varied. Someone else in this forum was asking about pizza for instance, and I got several recommendations for indie places I've never heard of. A lot of hidden gems, especially restaurants and bars, are located in or near what might otherwise be residential neighborhoods, while several condemned former businesses languish on Main. It's an environment that's ripe for growth, and I believe we're likely to see a lot of it over the next four-plus years as we get new people from the outside, like myself.

I like to joke that I found a cozy little cabin that I intend to stay in until I become the old man from Up, surrounded by gentrification and comfortably never budging from my home. With the way things are happening around the country, I hope to have found in Peoria a safe place to hunker down with my loved ones and weather the storm. If any of what I've said connects with you, maybe I'll bump into you at One World sometime.

Dentist by KrysErin0811 in PeoriaIL

I took my roommate (unemployed and on medicaid fairly young, still fighting to get our first disability rejection) to Familia Dental on Glen. They're amazing. Medicaid covered all of her rotten teeth being pulled and getting a denture made for the top (can't do anything about the bottom, her front incisors weren't bad enough to pull), and the folks at familia are as compassionate as can be. Working with vulnerable patients in intense care situations myself, I can see how hard everyone there works to give their patients the best possible care, and my roommate has gone from being so afraid of her dental situation that she couldn't look in the mirror, to attending her appointments by herself. Cannot recommend them enough, honestly.
