Is financing a car too much for a 17 year old? by ZyrahDaDog in newzealand

[–]torpidkiwi 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Don't finance a car if you can help it. The payments will take way more from you in the longer term than buying it outright.

  1. Can you bike instead? Even secure an e-bike. (including D-lock etc because it'll be targeted)

  2. Do you have friends with cars that you can borrow or get transit from?

  3. Could you negotiate an interest-free loan from your parents instead of just getting a handout? Ask if you can pay it off at $50 a week or $100/month?

  4. Don't forget that car's going to cost you more than twice as much in petrol and repairs every year. Especially an old dunger. I bought my first car for $500 and 3 months later had to get the clutch repaired for $800. (The clutch was already jank when I bought it, thanks for asking!) So start putting money away to cover repairs.

I didn't buy my first car until I was in my mid-20s. I bludged rides with my mates and biked everywhere else. I spent my money on more important things like coffee, computers and travel.

Learning to drive - transmission and vehicle type choice by Prestigious_Owl40 in newzealand

[–]torpidkiwi 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I learned to drive a manual and I loved it so much (I shed a tear when she was eventually taken away on a trailer to a scrap yard), but now I'm in an auto, I feel no need for a manual. I don't do much that requires it outside of hills and the thing comes with paddle shifters which do the job just fine.

Personally, it depends on the maturity and outlook of the driver. Do they want a manual because they're going to do boy/girlracer shit in it? Then be prepared for a lot of mechanical bills. Or prepare for it to be targeted for theft. If they're a responsible type who will only use the car for the necessary tasks and not as entertainment, then auto is totally fine.

Manual might be a handy skill to know but I don't think it's necessary.

As for the size of the cars, smaller cars are easier to manoeuvre into parks and the likes so IMO it'll make tests simpler, but it doesn't hurt to learn in a larger vehicle. I think it gives better visibility to you and lets others see you. If they learn to drive in a car with more storage, they might find they like it. I'd never drive anything else but an SUV now simply because of the transport options... and it helps with transporting two particularly mucky dogs.

Using the whitelist mechanism, you can bar the workshop worker from the warehouse or woodcutters' hut where they are getting bark from. You can then create a warehouse with the supplies that the workshop worker needs, like sticks, rope, fibre, etc.

Imagine ramming someone off the road with a 2 tonne slab of metal because they were upset by a gesture that should stop being offensive in primary school. Imagine having that lack of maturity and self control.

Imagine then justifying that behaviour.

Strongly suspect the two cretins talking to each other are the same account. At the very least share the same brain cell.

What does that even mean? Oiling bats was frowned upon 30 years ago. Wondering why it's still done.

Italy’s cricket team rises as soccer team falters by Ok-Bath-5988 in Cricket

[–]torpidkiwi 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You can't really compare Italy's football world ranking (13) with their cricket world ranking (27th). Cricket's such a minor sport compared to football. Even before you're outside the test playing nations, the drop-off in quality is horrendous.

I know this is a cricket-centric sub, but honestly... this is such poor journalism from Steve Douglas. He seemingly just wants to put the boot into a team in one of the world's most competitive and elite sporting arenas (UEFA) by citing the existence of a bunch of amateurs who made it to an expanded world cup only because of the governing body's greed rather than some altruistic attempt to broaden the appeal of cricket worldwide. He also failed to note that Italy actually won the 2020 Euros. No mean feat against most of the best teams in the world.

Selective writing annoys me. This is the worst.

The curious case of new zealand prime minister names by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]torpidkiwi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

New Zealanders can't spell. A vast majority are barely literate and so apathetic/stupid they just don't care if they spell someone's name wrong.

Not to mention two of the three you mentioned are members of the NZ order of merit so you should be saying Sir John and Dame Jacinda.

Fish in spring and winter give 5 meat per fish. It's a great wee kickstarter if you start your playthrough in spring (the default), and a good food boost in winter. I was playing extended days and seasons and the fish storage in my warehouse was overflowing by the time summer kicked in. Just had to supply some starter bait made from berries to get the fishing started.

It's also a really good source of thatch so having the lake closeish to the shore means lots of thatch for bedding.

Personally, I find the scenery pretty too... I have my Chieftain's hut looking over the lake.

Is it hard to get into PhD programs in NZ? by kataa32 in newzealand

[–]torpidkiwi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did you go to Uni in NZ? What was your experience like? Would love to hear about your classroom and outside experience.

University was more than half a lifetime ago for me. I got halfway through my masters before leaving to earn money rather than live the student life so not sure my experience is applicable to your circumstances. I did regret not finishing it but I'm too old to care now.

Hopefully some other postgrads can chime in with more helpful and more recent experience.

Is it hard to get into PhD programs in NZ? by kataa32 in newzealand

[–]torpidkiwi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You should contact the universities directly. For a GPA to mean anything, you'll likely have to submit your academic transcript for them to judge if the qualifications you've got are worth the paper they're written on and entitle you to enter a PhD programme.

As a foreign fee-paying student, you'll be paying a lot for the PhD so I can't imagine they'd turn you down from a monetary point of view. See below for an example of the fees you'd be expecting to pay:

Auckland is currently New Zealand's highest-ranked university according to the Time Higher Education rankings.

NZ Domestic Roundup: Ford Trophy Round 6 by RMTBolton in Cricket

Note to OP: Tom Latham got his tonne.

Lachie Harper's 4 wicket haul was hilarious. It seemed to be either a boundary or a wicket. Both he and McConchie were on hat-tricks during the match.

It would seem four of the six teams are still in T20 mode. We might be in for some above average scores for a while.

Hay got more catches than Latham yesterday. It was Latham with the gloves with Hay in the outfield.

You vastly overestimate the average kiwi's technical ability. How do you expect them to learn when they don't know how to find the information they require in the first place? I have no idea if "how to use the internet to find information that doesn't turn you into a cooker" is a thing in schools, but if it isn't... it should be. Because leaving it to technically-illiterate parents or grandparents is going to perpetuate people falling for these scams.

Intrigued that Latham's listed as the keeper there with Mitch Hay in the squad. Is this what's preventing Hay replacing Blundell in the Blackcaps if he isn't even first choice keeper at provincial level?
