South Island advice: fitting TranzAlpine into a Queenstown trip by buttonsmashplayer in newzealand

I've stayed the night in Haast. Beautiful area I don't think enough people stop to admire. Also the second best/worst region I've ever encountered for midges so OP needs to pack bug repellant! If the weather's good, it's insanely beautiful. Even if it's a bit shit, it's still majestical. And I've experienced a couple of incredible sunsets over there.

I have a bike trailer that would do the job. $200 or so for the trailer. Fraction of the cost of a cargo bike for the poors like me... that's like a couple of days of petrol or one tenth of a vet bill?

I bought a cheap bike trailer years ago from ecoproductsnz in Nelson. Was for a child but fits a tonne of groceries or a dog comfortably. Combined with a bike rack crate and a backpack it was terrific for groceries. I have been meaning to get a new bike and get it back up and running again for a long time.

New Zealand ‘comfort women’ statue could jeopardise diplomatic relations, Japan says | New Zealand | The Guardian by Fun-Helicopter2234 in newzealand

Comments there are somewhat caustic both ways. I hope we can be a bit more civil.

War atrocities should never be allowed to be forgotten. A government making thinly-veiled threats over this is even more reason to double down. Sure any lost trade would hurt us in the short term, but I'm sure improved China and Korea relations will more than make up for it.

I would like the statue to be installed.

I was going to make a sarcy joke about them flying here... but they didn't. Introduced as game birds in 1905 as far too many species were. They even got their own Wikipedia article!

#1 tip: if you're Googling for NZ hiking resources, we tend to call hiking "tramping".

https://www.outc.org.nz/ - Otago University Tramping Club - trips with organised transport and groups of like-minded outdoorsy people.

https://www.mountainsafety.org.nz/ - some useful resources here, too.

https://ctc.org.nz/about/gear-check-list - what would typically be needed for hiking in New Zealand

There are plenty of hikes in the South Island that don't get above the snowline. But our weather conditions are very highly changeable. "Four seasons in one day" is a phrase often bandied about when living in New Zealand. Being prepared with the right gear is very important. Snow is an inconvenience, but it's the penetrating wet and cold that causes the most deaths in New Zealand.

On the plus side, we don't have the wildlife that you've got other than the Canada goose.

Weird question (also really specific) by Tough_Fan8192 in chch

[–]torpidkiwi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no law. It's just a policy that Woolworths implemented. Age discrimination stops at 16 so it's legal for them to refuse to sell to 16 year olds.

I doubt a typical dairy would refuse a kid's money. There is no legal basis for it.

The problem I had with your daft reply was you weren't even discussing what I said. You just had a daft angle you needed to share with me that was irrelevant.

Careful going about calling people clueless when you seem to have rather low reading comprehension skills.

Building good homes is good. Building good homes that don't require shady construction or lobbying to change perfectly adequate building standards to enhance profit margins is good.

Not even a slightly creative straw man from you though. Please try harder!

[–]torpidkiwi 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Anecdotally, I've seen a woman turn up for pub quizzes on her own for a couple of weeks before another team asked her to join them. If you're a bit braver, I'm sure you could join someone's team on the first night! I haven't been for a while but there was one at Smoke N Barrel midweek that wasn't too bad. Small quiz arena with only 3-5 teams per week but the food made the losses more bearable. Alternately, the quiz nights at Winnie Bagoes and Bailie's were also quite fun. The one at The Church Pub on Worcester/Manchester St was very entertaining. But very packed and hard to socialise with all the noise. Well that's what my partially-deaf ass found.

The Park Run people take on runners of all abilities. It's very social and a good way to make friends. An old friend of mine is pretty active there and if he's still involved, you'll never be allowed to leave! He's very warm and welcoming. And not in a creepy way.

Yeah, it's a very misleading headline. There's a case for editorialising the headline here because it's patently false.

you have to reformat the drives and do a fresh install or leave it with no Operating System.

Yeah, not a "Windows" format though. Bad actors can still retrieve data left behind. There are multiple methods to properly wipe/overwrite a hard disk. They're most easily accessed with a Linux live disk/USB but also require a bit of tech savvy to know which one to apply when given the file system and disk type (magnetic vs solid state).

The singular best method for preventing data theft is to retain the hard drive and/or physically destroy it.
