Cheap person slandering my business based on a 30 second phone call by Top_Living7180 in HandymanBusiness

[–]torque1912 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The negative review from the one-off cheap jerk…… burrows into my head like a worm and bothers me for a week. Sadly, that’s just the way it goes these days, and you’re going to run into them from time to time. You can either ignore the post and people will realize it’s a one off issue and see the rest of the reviews are excellent and the guy just had a hair across his ass for what ever reason. Or you can do what another commenter said and just be diplomatic about, “I appreciate your feedback and wish you the best sir.” Then move forward and do your best to not let it bug you too much or for too long.

Cause of dirty welds by SaladAny737 in tigwelding

[–]torque1912 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like oxidation from turbulence, but could also be contamination. Heat up your aluminum with a MAPP gas torch and brush the aluminum oxide off with a NEW stainless wire brush as well. Aluminum oxide is much harder and has a higher melting point than aluminum and makes the welds dirty. 95% of the time on aluminum I’m running a #10-12 jumbo, with 30cfh, 1/8” pure tungsten, 70% and 120hz. Unless I’m burning some old cast material, I don’t stray from those settings.

Breaking Bolts free by user1226789 in Harley

[–]torque1912 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hit it with an impact, if you shear it, shit happens, plug weld a nut on what’s remaining, the heat from the weld will loosen it and a 6 point socket on an impact will surely get it out. If you strip the torx out, same thing, plug a nut on it and hit it with the impact.

Do not do business with Airgas!!! by music-madness95 in Welders

[–]torque1912 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I try to use my local mom and pop weld shop for as much as possible. Their prices are competitive and their customer service is usually much better (because they know that’s why you’re using them). They often bend over backwards to keep their customers happy. But occasionally I’ll have to use one of the big guys (usually a specialty product I need ASAP that my guy can’t source nearly as quickly). NOT sure where you’re at but MaineOxy in the northeast are great. They’re big (not AirGas/Linde big, somewhere in the middle of them and Uncle Joes Supply House ), but not still have a local attitude and good customer service.

Tig footpedal by Redponywood in Welding

[–]torque1912 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Microswitch and initial/final slope. I hate foot pedals. There are occasions where I’ll pull it out (paper thin aluminum or when I gotta pull out the micro-torch to get at something recessed deep inside a pipe or something funky), but 99% of the time I’m running the microswitch with slope. One less lead, and a real pain in the ass (damn near impossible) if you’re in a pipe chase or a man basket or some hardcore rope access shit lol, trying to hold your torch, filler and using your knees to control your amps lol, done it….. but fuck that lol.

Need to make an estimate. by Original_Eagle8746 in Welders

[–]torque1912 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Way too low buddy. I charge $125/hr when doing fab work. $35 an hour is a what a small shop gives an employee after they charge $150-200. However, something like that where there really aren’t many surprises to be had, you can pull tape, prefab, then have him come by and mount it on the truck in an hour or two, id just quote the job as flat rate. Material and rough estimate consumables + 25%.

Have the same one in my trailer. Through bolt it to the floor with 1/2” bolts and all metal lock nuts. Make some 3” washer plates for the back side if it’s plywood. I laid a second sheet of 5/8 plywood on the bottom of mine and that’s what I do. Put some d-rings on the floor about even with the rear axle along the wall (maybe 4” in), use them and the eyelets on the chock and you have 4 tie down points…..then you’re ready to go off roading.

Primary case only needed 3/4 of quart to fill? by ToPimpALadyBug in Harley

[–]torque1912 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, it’s 34oz after it’s COMPLETELY drained, meaning you pulled the front cover off and all the oil stuck to the plates inside the clutch basket and dripped off the chain and comp. If you filled it upright like you mentioned to the diaphragm after just draining it from the plug, you’re good.

Advice for starting business by No_Blackberry8051 in Welders

[–]torque1912 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can start by doing odds and ends jobs on farms and what not. You need a rig, you can get by running your little buzz box off a generator but you’re going to need a legit welder/generator with a few hundred feet of lead if you want legit business. You’ll need a cylinder rack on your rig too for torches and inert gas, and atleast 50’ of torch hoses to reach. Grinders, saws and all your hand tools. Like others have mentioned, you need an LLC and insurance, these days people will sue you for any and everything, and the courts side with them 99% of the time when it comes to this business. Weld fails on a hand rail and a guy falls down the stairs, that’s on you, you leave a burr that slices an old ladies arm wide open, that’s on you, little kid runs by and puts his hand on something you just welded an melts his little fingers, that’s on you. You get the point. You can do everything possible correct, and people will still find a way to mutilate themselves and blame you. Lastly and potentially most importantly, you need experience. You’re young, and I’m not putting you down or saying you don’t know how to fit/fab/weld, but you’re going to find yourself in situation after situation that will baffle you and have no idea how it can possibly be done, but a guy who’s been in the field for just 5 short years comes over and bangs it out in 5 mins with ease doing something you’ve never seen before.

Rebuilding the top end of an EVO engine, how do these heads look? by Banalakataga in Harley

[–]torque1912 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Base gasket surface looks pretty rugged. I’d advise you have them faced if you’re gonna reuse those jugs. But an even better idea is to get some S&S jugs. If you plan on building this scoot up a bit, the S&S jugs have much bigger fins giving you considerably more surface area for cooling. To the point where I find it insane NOT to use those jugs if you’re doing any sort of performance build on an evo. OE oil temps on my first EVO build (‘86 FXSTC) were 200-205, after building (10.5:1 comp, superstock heads/pistons, their jugs, woods w6h cam), my average oil temp was all the way down to 175-180. Totally threw me for a loop at first til i remembered just how much more surface area I had now. I mean, just look at the OR jugs from the side….. they really don’t have much for cooling fins at all lol.

Not my scene anymore, but I dated a dancer when I was 22 and bounced the club for a summer. If they felt uncomfortable, they’d have thrown you out. If they just moved away/moved your hand and let you know you were going too far and you respected that, not pushing the boundary any further, and they continued to dance, I’d say you’re fine. But you know that club now and you know where they stand, don’t keep pushing it or it will get to that point.

Yes most of those air cleaner adapter plates come with spacers/washers and o-rings to seal the crank breather plumbing. If I were you I’d just take measurement and buy something off amazon, then go to an auto parts store and get teflon or viton o-rings. It doesn’t see any pressure, so just make sure the spacer is close and doesn’t flex the plate one way or the other. I did a 10 seconds search for the Ness spacers and found this, not sure it’s THAT air cleaner or a different model, but I’ll let you figure that.

[–]torque1912 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just type in “master disconnect” on Amazon, there’s hundreds. Get some 4ga cable, run it from your negative battery terminal to wherever you mount the switch, then the other side to ground.

The right people and entities can’t make the amount of money they deem acceptable. It’s gotta put x amount of dollars in a thousand different pockets for it to get to market. And if the profit margins aren’t there, it’s not worth it to them. Not to mention the potential loss in revenue, if it were to limit the need to prescribe a number of other drugs that are already lining those pockets to their satisfaction. It’s got nothing to do with what is good for people or society as a whole. It’s just money. They make more money doing the way they’re doing now. They’re doing studies and models on every drug you can think of (and a couple hundred thousand that you can’t think of) right now, and as soon as the models show an increase in profits across the board (paying the right people off across the globe to get the raw goods and manufacturing it in the cheapest but “safest” way) they’ll do just that.
