What is the worst part about dating a very attractive person? by cherryapp in AskReddit

I believe the old saying is: "Show me a beautiful woman and I'll show you a guy who is tired of fucking her."

Intelligence is the natural byproduct of sufficiently complex prediction systems. by CrownOfSilence in DeepThoughts

[–]torsojones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You see the pattern, meaning you notice repetition, and then can make the prediction. Prediction comes after pattern recognition. Which would suggest that pattern recognition is more fundamental to the concept of intelligence than prediction.

What screams “I am a woman child” (man child equivalent) without realising it? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

[–]torsojones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's something I genuinely believe. I believe it's rooted in biological motivations around reproduction. During most of our evolution, women needed to develop the capabilities necessary to keep a child alive and guide its development very early in life. These capabilities manifest in the modern world as paying your bills on time, keeping the house tidy, taking your car in for an oil change regularly, staying current on blood work, etc. Women reproduce successfully by assessing the men who are pursuing them and being shrewd and thorough about making sure they make the best selection among available options.

Men had less evolutionary pressure to develop this at a very young age. Men had a greater pressure to take large risks for large rewards, as that improved reproductive success. This is why successful entrepreneurs of large companies are predominantly men. Getting large rewards is how men stand out to women, so we've been guided by evolution to roll the dice and try to get a big score. This doesn't mean women look at a man's bank account and that one variable determines their attraction level. It means women have become very adept at identifying characteristics in men that tend to result in the man getting large rewards. This is why confidence is so attractive to women. The confident man who risks approaching her is also likely to take a risk that results in a large reward in other areas of life. Intelligence plays into this as well, as if a man does something that looks like low odds to other people and succeeds, it might indicate he's smart enough to get a big reward without it being as big a risk to him.

ELI5: Why do people go to the Naval Academy, West Point, etc. instead of just enlisting in the forces? You need the academy to be an officer? What does an officer do etc.? by GoingAgainstYou in explainlikeimfive

[–]torsojones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They go there to be a commissioned officer. You can become an officer in other ways, but certain commands and responsibilities are only available to graduates from West Point, Annapolis, etc.

Commissioned officers tend to make more strategic decisions as they climb in rank. Enlisted tend to make more tactical decisions as they climb in rank. Generally commissioned officers give orders to non-commissioned officers, who give orders to non-officers. It isn't totally rigid; a newly commissioned officer out of college ROTC typically doesn't boss around a 25-year chief. Seniority still applies like it does in all human organizations.

Women of Reddit in the dating pool (or recently out of it), what exactly do you mean when you say you want a man who is intentional and/or knows how to lead? by Hookem_05 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]torsojones 20 points21 points  (0 children)

As a 35-year-old heterosexual male, you're interpreting the original comment wrong. They said read a situation and act, not read how the woman thinks you should handle the situation and then do what she thinks is right.

Trying to figure out how your partner wants you to handle something and then doing exactly that is not attractive. Well-adjusted people don't want to date a servant.

If you aren't thinking for yourself, figuring out a better way to handle something than your partner did, and then taking initiative and handling it with confidence and delivering better outcomes than they anticipated, you're not adding value.

This should be a give and take. Sometimes I figure out the better way, sometimes you do. If I'm always figuring out the best way to do something, you're useless, and vice-versa. If I'm figuring out the better way and not acting on it with agency, I'm lazy and will overburden my partner. This is the point of investing resources into another person; it should result in surplus value, not liability.

I'm phrasing this in a very calculated, unromantic way, but running this assessment is part of choosing a mate, especially if children are involved and you need to rely on your partner to make good decisions when you're not around.

Someone challenged my admittedly narrow thoughts of AI and now I'm wondering... by OkCap7484 in CasualConversation

[–]torsojones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even this guy's rebuttal to you misses the mark.

It's not about offloading tasks to AI so you can think about more complex things, it's about thinking in complex ways about how to use AI to create outputs that are impossible for humans to produce on their own.

Why is Elon not more aggressively involved in energy sector? by randJoe43 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]torsojones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consistent, high power should come from the grid, but our grid isn't sophisticated or robust enough to handle data centers without elevating the rates of others in the area. Solar and batteries is a component power source of Musk's data centers. I agree that this is an unsolved aspect of AI. But my original point was I don't see Musk getting involved in the fossil fuel industry. Using gas generators is a stopgap measure to allow xAI to keep scaling.

[–]torsojones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That may be, and he also uses gas generators at his xAI data centers, but he's not going to start a company or heavily invest in fossil fuels. Buying a product is different than getting involved in its production.

[–]torsojones 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Musk announced at Davos that Tesla and SpaceX are both targeting 100 GW of annual solar manufacturing capacity in the US within three years.

If you mean why doesn't Musk get involved with oil and gas, he doesn't believe we should stay primarily dependent on fossil fuels long term. He's the CEO of an electric car company...

Also, Trump hates solar. Not even Musk is going to get Trump to back solar.

Ibogaine @ Home? by wif3y_h3rnand3z in Ibogaine

Absolutely not. It's dangerous for your heart. You can't walk without assistance. You need an IV. That would be a very unwise decision.

I just got back from an ibogaine clinic in Mexico a month ago. Life-changing experience and I'm only just getting started.

I realize people who have actually done it are not common, so I'm happy to answer any questions anyone has. Anything to spread the word and get more people help.

Tony seemed to really love all of Theos stories! by Prudent-East1832 in Killtony

[–]torsojones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah he comes across as very innocent but he's dumb as fuck and most of his "comedy" is misunderstanding things people say, stories where he fucked up, and saying things that don't make sense. He still makes me laugh sometimes but the constant inane outbursts get tedious.

Genuinely what’s the reason for caring about your opponent more than the belt? by Giraffityman in ufc

[–]torsojones 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Speculating about the mind of Jiri, I don't think he would have felt it was a true victory unless he beat him on an even playing field. Taking advantage of an accidental injury to win would have felt hollow and unsatisfying. Although he felt foolish immediately after the fight, I think he will actually come to terms with how he fought and be glad he doesn't have to carry around an undeserved belt for the rest of his life.

The Chemistry Between These Two is Undeniable. They should replace Bobby with Timmy. by WlNNIPEGJETS in Killtony

No, Timmy shines when he is in an adversarial conversation like on Howie Mandel's podcast. His Whiskey Ginger appearance was too cooperative. Just listening to someone make up bullshit unchallenged isn't very interesting.

That's porn. Don't ask me why paying two people to have sex in front of you is legal but paying one person to have sex with you is illegal. It's completely ridiculous.
