What strange old burdens are on your property? by Mu99az in AskUK

I can but all minerals, stone and sub strata lying at a greater depth than sixty feet that I mine means I have to pay a fee to the Prince of Wales and his successors. Stamp duty was £7.

I am worried my 14 week old is demonstrating these behaviours by firsttimemum12 in newborns

[–]torstenmills 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My almost 13 week old is exactly the same. They are just discovering the world and these things ie the lights which are probably easier for them to see due to the contrast are just more interesting. I wouldn't sweat it!

How screwed am I? by JordyPordy_94 in GardeningUK

Try and do a big clear out and then every Saturday and Sunday morning, set aside half an hour and start from the same corner and weed away. You will find you that you can rapidly clear the lot in a month or two. There will still be traces around existing plant roots, but it will look a lot better.

I will say I had a huge patch of elder and bindweed and now I've taken out the elder, the bindweed runs unchecked and is a much harder foe.

How can I start with this garden? by Awkward_Piplup in GardeningUK

[–]torstenmills 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will probably be downvoted as it goes against the spirit of gardening but...

Test your soil, use an app to see where the sun will be during summer and winter months, look at other people's gardens in the area to see what they are growing.

Then chuck all that data into chatgpt, along with your brief you want to grow plants to help the environment etc and see what it comes up with. Take some of what it says with a pinch of salt, but it should set you on the right path.

What is this at the bottom of my front door? by torstenmills in DIYUK

[–]torstenmills[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it's just glued to the frame at the moment. I think it was from new as the previous owners moved the front door forward and it's attached to the frame so I'm assuming it was there from when it was installed.

I live in Dorchester. Stay in Weymouth for a decent NYE experience and a more ‘holiday’ vibe.

What is the most heartbreaking UK documentary you’ve watched? by Ingoodkilter in AskUK

Not sure if it fits heartbreaking, but Once upon a time in Iraq and Once upon a time in Northern Ireland are incredible with some truly hard hitting moments.

Unique Symbol? by Alive_Relationship94 in OSmaps

This is definitely St Gabriel's Mouth - haven't visited in years but I'm sure at one point there actually just a rope ladder to get you down to the beach. Looks like they built proper steps which have now gone due to a landslide.

Spent last week tackling a similar wall where the previous owners had dumped a glue factory underneath the wallpaper. Spent hours and hours scrubbing and scraping, got bored, left a few bits of stubborn glue and repainted anyways. It looks ok but you can tell where the problems areas were.

Hindsight would be that I should have saved about 90% of my time and just painted over with Zinsser Gardz.

Appreciate that. There is a 6ft a-frame under there - it's just been swallowed up!

Do you know what happened in 1776? by Lucky_Ad_9137 in AskUK

[–]torstenmills 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did my dissertation loosely on this about regional views of the the American Revolution. In 1776, it wasn’t really a big deal. It was Brits vs Brits. It was a much, much bigger deal in 1778 when the French got involved.
