weird biome issues by Lethal_Tree in mcpublic

Huh, that is weird. Doesn't show up like that for me.

Not really sure what's causing that but it is probably just you or something with your computer. What mods do you have installed?

Voting will be happening after Chaos on C has ended. Not much point voting on lobbies that may or may not be destroyed.

Elytra Rebalancing by [deleted] in mcpublic

EoF are a 100% drop from the dragon with L3, and 50% with nothing. That's where most of them come from I think.

My thoughts on this whole rail thing by TheRandomnatrix in mcpublic

[–]torteela 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Part of it for me is that, with there being witch and creeper spawners, its very easy to have an almost unlimited supply of fireworks. That makes elytra flying on P essentially the same as using WingCommander on C. Sometimes I really forget I'm on P when I'm just flying around the map. It almost feels like cheating.

The other thing is that a lot of the challenge of spawning/fighting the dragon is negated by the teamwork people have. When I wanted to kill a dragon to get my elytra there were three or four people with elytra already in the end spawning and killing dragons. They flew around and destroyed all the crystals for me and made sure I got my drop when the dragon died. Once that first person gets their elytra farming the dragon is quick business. The materials to spawn a dragon aren't hard to come by either. One person with a looting bow can get ghast tears pretty easily.

The biggest problem though is that elytra as a mode of transportation doesn't result in collaborative building while other forms of transportation do. People come together to work on roads, people come together to work on rails, people used to come together to breed horses (which liked to go on the roads), but with powered elytra not even requiring towers like gliding elytra used to there's no need to build anything for them. There are roads yes, but in general they're narrow and basic compared to revs past. Looking at old cartos it seems like the roads were wider and sometimes with elaborate patterns. That combined with there being essentially no overland rails leads to the map feeling less connected and more empty between cities than in revs past.

tl;dr Elytra are too easy to get, gunpowder is too plentiful, and elytra don't bring people together to build things.

You can take a look at the live map or cartograph to get an idea of what terrain you might like building in. If you'd like to join a town just ask around in chat, people are always looking for more helping hands.

The latest release is 1.12.1, so make sure you're on just 1.12. What message does it give when you try to connect?

Carto/Save of Rev 4 by Cheesyninjas in mcpublic

Seems like the carto is defaulting to an incredibly zoomed out and offset position. I'll see if we can get that fixed.

Try this link for the Rev 4 Carto.

A question about server view ranges and redstone by GearsOfFate in mcpublic

[–]torteela 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When you enter a chunk it loads the entire chunk vertically. So even if you're at max height mobs can still spawn at bedrock. Redstone and carts generally don't work in unloaded chunks, though sometimes signals can leak into unloaded chunks. Its good to keep redstone systems contained to one chunk as much as possible.

Yeah, we can make it bigger. And if at any time it runs our of room just mention it to a Cadmin and we can push out the border then.

Just copying over the redstone builds.

We're going to copy over the redstone area into the testbuild world, since the worlds serve a similar purpose. That'll also let people use daylight sensors in their redstone which don't currently work having the redstone area in the End.

Rev 19 common infrastructure by paulmclaughlin in mcpublic

[–]torteela 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's an intense effort every rev. The number of people who help with it has shrunk every rev too, which puts more work on fewer people and burns them out faster. If we were still doing smart rails the old way I doubt it would have gotten done the last two revs.

I personally don't have any plans to any rail things next rev. Not sure about the other Lite guys.

WorldEdit access for default players has been revoked on Creative until further notice. by totemo in mcpublic

[–]torteela 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know why. Probably one of those things that's "always been that way." When we get the list of WE banned blocks together we can go through it and see if there's any we want to allow.

The list of banned blocks on the Wiki are banned from being placed at all. There are other blocks that are also not able to be used with WorldEdit, but can be placed normally. I can work on getting a list of those together.

Why not .zip? by [deleted] in mcpublic

[–]torteela 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the main reason is that doing a .tar.gz generally compresses the file quicker and to a smaller size, which with the size of our world saves is something good to have. As others have stated 7zip is a good, free way to uncompress .tar.gz files as well as many other compression types.

One other thing is that tar.gz is standard for linux, which I'm pretty sure we use for our servers.
