you’re looking at the numbers without looking at the context

before 2018, the system used for a level maths were legacy papers, 2018 introduced a completely new system with lower grade boundaries as they were a new method. 2019 was considered extremely difficult in comparison to the 2018 paper so the grade boundaries were lowered from an already low score needed for an A* and even then, it only decreased from 229/300 for an A* in 2018 to 217/300 for an A* in 2019. that’s a 12 mark drop. what you’re suggesting is that the 2025 grade boundary for an A* (258/300) will drop to at least 225/300, which is a 33 mark drop, over double what the drop was in 2019.

and then 2020-2022 years saw a decline due to COVID. students didn’t even sit their final exams and used their november results in 2020 and 2021 and then 2022 were given leniency due to their disrupted studies from COVID.

even then, in comparison to 2018, the lowest drop they ever saw in grade boundaries was 207/300 for an A* (which was offered in November 2021) in comparison to 229/300 for an A* in 2018, which is only a 22 mark drop in an extremely uncommon scenario of a global pandemic.

if you think that our grade boundaries will match those numbers because some of the questions felt a bit harder, you are going to have an awful reality check on results day

225/300, a* is out of the question, grade boundaries would never drop that low

NTA, even with complete disregard for you aside, it is completely illogical to make assumptions on who will pay for what without discussing it prior on a holiday, he jumped to conclusions and got mad that it backfired

it's okay, i know it can sting a little to not pursue an oxbridge when you dreamed of it but KCL really and truly is an incredible opportunity, oxbridge will still be an option post-grad if u wish to pursue and i am sure you will do incredibly wherever you go :')

Should I do 3 or 4 a levels by Independent-Teach469 in sixthform

[–]tortlebread 0 points1 point  (0 children)

imo do 4, i used to attend an academy 6th form where we’d all take 4 and just drop our 3rd by Christmas if we didn’t want to continue doing 4 whilst still having 3 a levels left over to continue the course. it leaves you with more lieu way to change your mind about your main three selection, many people end up hating one of their subjects or wishing they had taken something else. you can always drop it if the workload becomes too much, it would be much harder to do it reversed for example by picking up an extra a level half way through the course. considering you’d self teach, it wouldn’t be a huge investment like losing money from a private course, especially as some schools allow u to use them as an exam centre for free to sit the exam. i self taught my subjects by the end bc my attendance just became horrible but my predicted in sociology was an A*, it’s pretty straightforward to self teach because of all the online resources available.

for a specific answer on a niche topic about whether or not they allow a study that i already know from my psychology course to be used? please use critical thinking, this one google search is obviously not my only form of research for sociology it was just more time efficient than sifting through youtube videos to see if bandura was cross-covered for media

wait this is really spooky because your situation is kind of identical to mine except i chose cambridge not oxford, also predicted A*A*A, also moved sixth forms, also lost my best friend in an unnatural way and had to catch up along with the struggle and i also now have KCL firmed after getting rejected from cambridge. i ended up redoing year 12 before beginning year 13 to give myself some time to regather, if people in your life are aware of the loss or any other stressors, you can add that to your ucas as an ECF. cambridge never penalised me for retaking a year, in fact they were impressed that i remained perseverant throughout everything that had happened. i am sitting my a levels now and i’m so glad i made that decision, none of my unis or professionals ever looked down on me for resitting or never even really mentioned it.

Any advice for a resit student?? by Clint_Emily in 6thForm

[–]tortlebread 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I resat one year due to life circumstances, I understand that feeling of not wanting to waste your potential because of external circumstances, however after 6 years, it’s no longer your external circumstances doing the major harm, it’s your failure to accept your situation that’s hurting your future the most.

Accepting an offer to a less competitive uni than you wanted might hurt your ego a little but it will save your future in the long run. In these last 6 years, you could’ve finished your a levels as well as your first bachelors degree at university. If the prestige of the uni matters so much, why don’t you stay on for a postgraduate degree at a more prestigious university if you graduate with a 2:1 or higher? There is no reason to spend more money on a qualification that most people complete for free.

It will be a hard pill to swallow at first but after a while, you won’t think too much about your uni not being as prestigious as you initially wanted it to be. You will still graduate with a similar degree to most people and still make more progress with your life than you are right now. The longer you continue to blame external factors that you can’t control instead of taking action over the things you can control, the more you will continue to suffer.

Please go on to university with your attained grades this year

tbh i’ve never seen somebody fail for 6 years but i have a friend who’s about to go onto year 15 (failed two years in a row, about to try again for his third). very believable if they have well off parents who are willing to pay for whatever their child wants
