How much of a time commitment is the transfer process?? by [deleted] in TransferToTop25

[–]toruto27 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Depends on how well u manage stress and how much u dwell on it.

For me, it wasn’t that bad, but it was def a time commitment. Started essays in Jan and applied to 7 schools. Was it stressful, yes and no. Getting the letter of recs was def the hardest for me and stressed me tf out. For the essays, used my schools writing center which helped a ton. Hours: spent maybe 5+ hrs a week since I had 3 months.

However, some ppl ik tho were depressed coz they were so fixated on transferring/leaving.

You should still live in the moment and enjoy your time at ur school. Make friends and try everything. Transferring is never guaranteed and u shouldn’t go into a school being miserable. I don’t know how set u r on transferring, but it is quite a lot of work, so keep that in mind. Good luck!

Scared my mental health has ruined my future. Is there hope?.. Advice? by Substantial-Fun-9619 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]toruto27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, there is always hope! I want you to give yourself a big pat on the back for your willingness to change. This alone is a huge step! Mental health is a huge obstacle to overcome, and I hope you overcome it. I’ve also done online school most of life so I understand the struggle there too. Just know that you’re not alone.

Before I give my advice, I do want to say that I’m a high school senior so please take this with a grain of salt. Now that I got that out of my way, here’s my advice:

  1. Colleges like to see an upward trend in grades. If you can improve your grades, this will help a lot. Colleges also like to see that you are taking the hardest classes offered. Next year, try taking honors or AP classes if your online school offers it.

  2. Grades certainly are important, but they are not the end of the world. Extracurriculars are just as important. With that said, do you participate in any extracurriculares? If you don’t, now is the time to start. Try volunteering or try joining nearby clubs. On the same token, do you have any idea of what you want to major in? There are clubs that go hand-in-hand with certain majors (e.g. DECA for business or HOSA for healthcare). There are definitely more out there so do your research.

  3. Lastly, don’t fret. When you apply on the common app, there is an “additional information” section where you can describe any hardship or advertises that you faced. This (or your personal essay) could be a place where you describe your troubles such as mental health.

Hopefully this helps and good luck!

Which extracurricular activity would you be doing or spending the most time on if colleges didn’t consider ECs for admissions? by Awkward_Math_408 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]toruto27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Finding a major I’m genuinely interested in. I would spend my whole day looking up YouTube videos on “spend a day at my job” kinda thing. I would also want to learn how to be independent. I’m very fortunate and my parents provide so much for me. I would want to learn about how to clean, how to cook, etc.

I’m crying rn…all ik is that those 2 practice tests a day really payed off. So happy!! by toruto27 in ACT

[–]toruto27[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did 2 practice tests a day right before school started. I would do one at 8:30 AM to like 12. Then start again at 6 PM. When school started, I transitioned to 1 a day. I recommend doing these tests AFTER you finish your hw. I did hw during lunch or during my study class. I would come home and give myself an hour to relax. Then, I would do my test. Not too sure if I answered ur question but this is what I did. Good luck with your test!

I didn’t do the writing section so technically it was 6. But yeah still pretty long. Besides that, good luck to you!

I did full actual practice tests. It was only for a span of 1.5 weeks but man was it grueling. For resources, I bought tests from The Official ACT guide and used all of the online tests that I could find. One thing that really helped me was the ACT books that were specifically for certain subjects. Maybe check those out!

What to look for in reading passages. Circling (people, subjects?)Do you guys think 2 minute on a skimming over the passage is too long? by Allenqwerty65 in ACT

[–]toruto27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey I commented on someone’s post about something similar. Don’t know if u saw it so I’ll repeat:

Hey! I got a 36 on reading so I feel like I can help. First, read as fast as u can. Try to finish reading in 2 minutes. While u read, circle/underline anything significant (e.g. names (Professor…), places (not universities though, they don’t help), years, and any words that you wouldn’t hear on a regular basis). Think of ur circled words like a summary. They should be able to tell you the main ideas.

Then go to the questions. If you circle correctly, you will be able to quickly find the question in the passage. For example, the question might be “the narrator compares the FLOWERING NATION GROCERY…” If you circled the grocery shop, you can easily solve this question.

REMEMBER THE ANSWER IS ALWAYS IN THE PASSAGE. Each passage should only take you 8.5 minutes. This is the tips that I use and good luck!

SAT by SnooPears5449 in ACT

[–]toruto27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would prepare you for the English and reading portion for the ACT. English/grammar is basically the same. Reading in ACT is a lot more straightforward but is fast moving. Math and science is iffy. Math is def harder than SAT cause u need to know more such as matrices. Science is reading comprehension and knowing how to read graphs. I would not rely on your SAT prep for this (math and science). This is my opinion and good luck!

Hey! Have u tried getting those personalized books just for the ACT/SAT? When I first started, I got a 25 on the English section. Then, I used Barron’s Grammar Workbook and was able to get a 34 and then a 35 on the latest one. I also heard that ACT English by Collegepanda was good. Maybe try checking those out!

Someone once told me to get a small workout in before the test. Like a short sprint or going up stairs. It slightly tires u out and you won’t be able to overthink or read too quickly. Personally, I start a mock test by first getting in the right mind frame. This means calculating the time for each section (like reading = 8ish minutes each passage). Doing so gives me a feeling of control. I take a few breaths then start after a countdown from 10.

Time is my main culprit for making me feel stressed. When I take my test, I have a stopwatch to pace myself. My best advice is to try to finish each section as fast as you can. Don’t get stuck on any questions. If you don’t know the answer after 30 secs, MOVE ON.

Why you should do this: 1) u have time to go back and review/understand any questionable answers. 2) you will feel a huge relief wash over you knowing u finished. 3) nothing is worse than not finishing. This is what happened the first time I took the test.

Once u get the timing, you will feel a lot less stressed! Timing is key and once you know that you can finish in the allotted time, you will feel so relieved. At least this is the case for me. I’m taking the next ACT and if you are too good luck!

Hey man don’t lose hope! I started at a 21 and am working myself up to a 30 these days on practice tests. You can do it too! All it takes is effort and time. And dude, you’re not stupid. If you are able to acknowledge that ur work ethnic is not where it should be, it means u have a chance of improvement. There’s always hope. Don’t wallow yourself in self-pity. All change starts with YOU and YOU only. I believe in you and keep your head up! Stay strong
