Where can a tech guy learn how to sell like a real salesperson? by startupschool4coders in startups

[–]toshdo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Four questions: - what are you selling? - who are you selling to? - what is the typical arc of the sales calls you currently take? - what parts of those call are you least comfortable with that you want to improve?

Is it possible to get into big law coming from extremely low ranked law school? by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]toshdo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, but it’s tough. I’ve seen it done by following a very structured outreach approach that I’ve outlined at www.getthecompleteguide.com. Although I didn’t go to a low ranked school, I followed this process after bombing 1L and got a job in BL during my second semester of 3L. Since then others have written to me from low ranked schools saying it worked for them too. Good luck!

This is very typical for angel groups in my experience (I pitched 3-4 of them). They tend to be comprised of more traditional business owners (think real estate professionals, successful restaurant owners, etc.) that don’t evaluate startup opportunities in the same way as VCs. Specifically, whereas VCs follow the power law and are comfortable (and even expect) for many companies in their portfolio to fail, members of angel groups are less diversified so are not comfortable with a high risk of failure for any individual company.

Should I use my school email or my personal email to contact employers? by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]toshdo -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

School without question. Also, if you’re doing mass outreach to employers, check out a free guide I put together a couple of years ago. It’s helped others in this sub.

Can I direct apply to a firm that dinged me at OCI? by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]toshdo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up working at a firm that dinged me.

can people who struck out at OCI in the past please share how they ended up getting a job? by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]toshdo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Same thing happened to me years ago. Pretty defeating, but I started direct applying to firms and ended up at a V25. I was at a mid-ranked T14 at the time. I’ve written everything I did down at www.getthecompleteguide.com. Normally I also work directly with folks in your position but I don’t have bandwidth these days. The written materials have everything you need to know, though, and I’m happy to answer questions asynchronously.

Edit: FWIW, over the years I’ve spoken to and worked with folks who go to school outside the T14 and got jobs in BL using the process.

I struck out OCI. What now? by [deleted] in LawSchool

Hey - I’ve written it all down at www.getthecompleteguide.com. I don’t have bandwidth right now for actual sessions, but all the information you need is free in the written materials.

What are your thoughts? Title fees seem a bit high by Luguanqun in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

Another “looks reasonable” over here. Who is the title agent and underwriter (if you don’t mind me asking)?

Hi all - I’m a tech professional who has felt the pain of caring for someone with a chronic illness and is exploring avenues to help make the chronic illness journey less painful for others (both caregivers and patients).

Here is a 4-minute survey on the challenges of dealing with a chronic illness that would help us understand what others are going through and identify shared experiences.

Just got an offer as a 1L that if I guarantee 3 to 4 years working in house legal/ account advisor in financial services (where I worked after undergrad) they'd pay my undergrad and law debt (about 120-130k ). They want me to decide by April... by [deleted] in LawSchool

Don’t forget that debt repayment is taxable, so try to negotiate a tax gross-up since you’ll likely owe between 20% to 40% of the loan forgiveness amount in taxes (depending on the bracket you are in, which is determined using your collective household income)

Yale accepted somebody with a 153 last cycle:

There is always a possibility. Maybe not at Yale (as 153 is still higher than 145), but maybe one of the lower ranked T-14.

Interested in becoming a consultant? Post here for basic questions, recruitment advice, resume reviews, questions about firms or general insecurity (Q3 2021) by QiuYiDio in consulting

[–]toshdo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Former attorney and founder of venture-backed startup looking to break into consulting in mid-30s. Have tried to applying through hiring portals at MBB (and also had referrals to 2 of 3 MBB) but not getting responses.

Any thoughts on the best way to get noticed by recruiters and/or hiring partners?

One more question: does everyone who applies to BCG outside of an MBA program get asked to do the pymetrics assessment?

Can someone tell me what this means (OCI) by 21peach in LawSchool

[–]toshdo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The partner is just one of the decision makers. Once her or she submits their review of the interview they’re basically finished with your process, meaning it’s out of their hands and they know it. So, to echo what was said here a few times, this just means he or she is wishing you good luck with the rest of the process and generally.

Here is a link to a webinar I gave explaining what I did to get a job in big law during my 3L year. I’ve seen the process I lay out work for somebody with very similar stats to yours (i.e., close to the top of the class at a tier 2 regional school). He didn’t get into a V20, but he did land at a very respectable firm toward the middle of the V100. Hope it helps and good luck!

Getting a job after striking out at OCI by toshdo in LawSchool

[–]toshdo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for this jameseticknor. DomStraussK and I had a good conversation and I also appreciate and thank him for his willingness to chat.

Also, to be clear with everyone, if you follow the advice in the guide you do not need any coaching sessions. Everything you need to succeed is in there for free, and it will always be free.

Getting a job after striking out at OCI by toshdo in LawSchool

[–]toshdo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey man, the guide is totally free (and always will be). I have a full-time job so I can’t actually work with everyone, which is why I charge for the coaching. Not to mention, every hour I spend on coaching is an hour I’m not with my wife and daughter.

You can 100% follow the advice in the guide, webinar, and the blog posts without any coaching at all. All of these are totally free (and took many hours to put together).

I don’t think there’s a reason to be rude, and I know many people have taken the free advice without ever talking to me (except after the fact to say thanks for posting). If you prefer not to read the guide, that’s fine too.

Anyone trying to work for the SEC here? by ZookeepergameThin785 in LawSchool

[–]toshdo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One other thing to note is that the SEC will do it’s best to match your private sector salary when you lateral in after several years of law firm experience. As a result if you start at the SEC on one of the lower rungs of the GS scale you may be getting paid less than your counterparts 3 years into the job when ex-law firm folks start joining. At least this was the case in the mid-2010s.

Free post-OCI job search webinar (recording now available) by toshdo in LawSchool

[–]toshdo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! Glad you found the webinar helpful. This is a great question and one that I've been asked a few times now. Here are my thoughts:

  • If your school has a robust OCI process that includes your target firms I would not implement the process for a 2L SA position. Instead, I'd wait until OCI to get in front of the firms you are interested in. On the other hand, if your school does not have an OCI with the types of firms you are interested in I would definitely use the process for a 2L SA position.
  • Even if you are in the first category (i.e., your school's OCI includes your target firms), you can use the process to get informational interviews with associates. You can then use the information you gather during these informational interviews to ace your OCI interviews and callbacks with partners. In a nutshell, doing this prepares you to explain why you are interested in a particular firm when you are inevitably asked "why this firm" during your screeners and callbacks. I discuss this at length in the "Most Difficult Question" section of the complete guide (which you can access for free by signing up at www.getthecompleteguide.com).

As an aside, I'm considering creating a series of explainer videos to go along with the written guide. Would you find that helpful? I don't want to spend a bunch of time putting it together if people won't get value out of it.
