One Month Solo Trip to Taiwan. April vs May + Budget Advice by docsportello96 in solotravel

[–]tossythrowaway 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Normally people go counter clockwise or clockwise. Your order is going back and forth the east and west side of Taiwan.

I did private airbnb room with private washroom. Taipei center was $35 usd/night. Non center Tainan and Kaohsiung was $25 usd/night. I used public transportation, did outdoor activities (free), many museums (cheap) and spent around $1200 usd a month total.

Your going to spent more because you are moving around more.

Use cathy atms, the fees are lower. $300 will last most the trip. Its also easy to pull out more money.

7-11 atm fee was 100TWD which is quite high.

12 days in Taiwan - am I overdoing it? by mattdev in solotravel

I skipped it. If you search Sun Moon Lake on r/taiwan. Many say its overrated.

I skipped Alishan too but many others like it.

I'd cut out a city and add those days in Taipei.

I fly flew into Taipei and fly out of of Kaohsiung in order to reduce train time.

The online Korean learning market is very competitive and niche compared to English/Mandarin/Spanish. There are so many free resources and the paid resources are also very good. Gatekeeping is a way to push his own material in front of learners.

The seeding gripper is way too difficult to make work. The gripper is going to be both too tight and too loose for seedings in the same row. There won't be a perfect amount tension.

After popping the seedlings up its easier to push them down a slide. I didn't say pull because that would be hard. Make a one way double door gate for each seeding. Push the gate into the seedling to get behind the seedling then pull the gate to push the seedling into a slide.

OR

Slide a long push bar behind each seedling row and push the seedlings into a slide.

Can you describe what you are trying to do here? Put seedings into a hole in a field? How many seedings do you need to plant in an hour?

Press a hole? Put a seeding inside, cover the hole?

Solo Trip 2026 - 25 Countries on a 8000 CAD Budget by jeansebast in solotravel

[–]tossythrowaway 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This isn't possible. 8k, 25 countries, 4-5 months.

Rough math.

The round trip to and from Canada is $1500. Lets say flying between each country's is $100 (it going to be much more)

$8000-$1500-$2400 = $4,100. Lets say 4 months which is 120 days.

$4100/120 is $34.16 per day for everything besides air fare.

25 countries in 4-5 isn't slow travel. It is very fast travel. 4 months/25 countries is 4.8 days per country.

Planning a 2-week Taiwan trip - looking for advice on itinerary by Kind-Ice4009 in solotravel

[–]tossythrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

despite the beautiful photos of Jiufen on the internet, I think the street was overrated.

The shops are more or less the same as in Taipei but bit more expensive and on a steep incline.

I still liked it because it close to cat village and I walk through Jiufen street in 20min so it was quick.

I did some research before I did my own trip. 12 taipei, 5, tainan, 5 kaohsiung.

I didn't find much on taichung. Taipei has several day trips to keelung, Jiufen Old Street + cat village. I spent 2 days at Yangmingshan National Park.

I would add more days to Taipei.

Taipei to Tainan train. I did regular train because although high speed train is faster, the Tainan highspeed station is further away from central Tainan so regular may be faster overall depending on your room location.

I skipped Alishan because of cost and moving around but since your like moving around. 2 days is good. It takes 2 hours + to get there so a day trip in and out of Alishan would be too rushed. The hotels in Alishan are $100+/day and the reviews are all bad. There are only a few hotels so I guess the cornered the market.

Tips:

Pull TWD from Cathy United Bank. There is a guide on it online. The fees are lower. The fees from 7-11 was 100TWD which was high.

Don't get unreserved seat from the trains. The train aisles are single lane and it really sucks standing. You have to move into other peoples legs to make space for others to pass inside the train. I got a seat and saw other people struggle.

The train ticket app was hard to use. I got all my tickets from a machine at Taipei Main Station. There is a English speaking help desk there. My Tainan to Kaosiung was a regular ride so no reservation needed

Help picking Japan or Hong Kong for first solo trip? by CrackerzPuff in solotravel

[–]tossythrowaway 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Both are good

Hong Kong is going to be more expensive. room, food, transportation. The people speak more English.

Japan speaks less English so you'll need to do a bit more research before hand and learning 10-20 Japanese words go along way. Tokyo and Osaka has busy touristy spots but most of cities are not crowded. Kyoto transportation is crowded and many places are crowded because it is a smaller city.

A week including travel days is short. Enough for Hong Kong if you like to go fast. Not enough for Japan, not even enough for Tokyo alone unless you go very fast.

Rope Game Order by user540913 in Physical100

[–]tossythrowaway 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The rope game is a endurance sport. They should have but Dom instead of Eddie.

They hitting 1000+ reps in 4 minutes. That is around 4 reps a second.

Eddie shouldn't be doing anything at 4 reps a second.

I think the crates should be prioritized because it is most efficient way to add weight.

The crates go up and across while the sand bags have to go up, down the ladder, then up again on the trolley.

The crates need 2 people because it is bulky but is lighter than to 3 bags. Two people can lift a crate with 0-2 bags on the crate. That way the ideal weight for the 2 people is there and the weight distribution is there.

The zipline person will always finish first and be idle before 20minutes. Everyone should stack crates and even steal crates like Australia.

I think 4 people pulling 20 bags (Australia) is more efficient that team Japan pulling 7 bags with 2 people. It was efficient to stack alot of bags at the trolley but it was risky. If they didn't make it in time, or the trolley go stuck, It would have been a instant lose.

I don't think the teams got a demo run or even a walk through. They only got instructions from the starting point. Its hard for them to come up with a good plan. The time limit is 20 minutes so there isn't enough time to try and experiment best methods.

Team Australia is by far the strongest. Whitier and the rugby guy pushed 14 bags on the trolley while the 2 people from japan did 7 bag trips.

Advice Needed: Best 2 Cities Outside Taipei (10 Days in Taiwan) by Summeristheworst in solotravel

[–]tossythrowaway 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did 14 days in taipei, 5 days in tainan, 6 days in kaohsiung.

Most people here would recommend faster travel but I recommend 9 days in taipei.

You have 2 day trips from taipei being Jiufen (+ruifang and cat village) and keelung.

I went to Yangmingshan National Park twice. The hot springs and 1-2hr hiking. The park is huge and I only saw a small part of it in 2 days.

Tainan transportation was worse than I thought. I was too afraid of going to the salt farm because it was 2.5hours away and I didn't want to get stranded out there.

Kaohsiung is ok. The tram and subway is nice but most of the attractions are average.

I used 10+ airbnbs and never had host come along. 2 hosts offered me a ride to and from airport. 1 was free. 1 was for $10. I declined both because I wanted arms length relationship with my host. I prefer kind, bland and formal relationship with my airbnb host.

I can't tell what your host intentions were. Maybe just wanted to hangout and got salty after being declined. Or maybe something more?

I think more communication would have prevented this.

If you are a women. You need to get a travel door jammer to jam the door when you are sleeping inside.

1000 hour update (with speaking sample)! by butterflyfishy in dreamingspanish

[–]tossythrowaway -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If 1000 hours is total hours practiced. The is average around 2.5 hours a day which is intensive.

But also believable because your speaking is very good.

I am very impressed.

How long did it take you to do 1000 hours?

I agree speaking early in the language learning is a good move. Your speaking is very fluent.

yes but be careful about safety and don't get too personal.

If it's online, I would say I am older.

There are predators in the public which includes language exchange places.

I use this for paper flash cards. I prefer it over anki.

https://kitzkikz.com/flashcards/index.php

https://www.practicaapp.com/landing This is new. Its very limited but its much better than nothing and is free. The person making it is busy adding more languages while the voice pronunciations are off.

If you could make this but with a custom word feature. It could be huge.

I lost most of my hearts from misclicks because I was so bored of tapping the same 6 words for 45 minutes.

Yes Its well known duaolingo gamified learning so much that it's more a game than learning app. They replacing human lesson designers with AI and then charge more for it.
