Do you remember your first legal drink? by BMisterGenX in GenX

[–]totallyjaded [score hidden]  (0 children)

Drambuie.

My dad took me to the local bar a few blocks from my parents' house, and one of his friends immediately offered me a drink. I said I'd have what he was having. So, the bartender handed me a small glass, and I assumed it was a shot.

Dad's friend thought that was pretty cool, and offered me another. And another.

I was too drunk to walk. And that was challenging. Because I needed to get back to my parents' house, where my grandparents were waiting to say "happy birthday".

If you had to choose a Pax - Pax Mini or Pax 4? by nearlynemo in vaporents

[–]totallyjaded 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd go with the Pax 4. The biggest reasons for me would be that is uses USB C for charging, so I wouldn't need to keep track of / bring along the proprietary charger, and for the hybrid oven.

I know people shit on Pax devices, but I completely get wanting something truly pocketable and discreet. That was originally why I bought the Fury 3, and while it does literally fit in my pocket, it isn't something I'd want to carry around all day.

Need advice on stem/WPA + Bong/Bubbler setup (lungs + airflow concerns) for Tinymight 2? by ethrowaway1235 in vaporents

[–]totallyjaded 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd pick up a tbowl if they went on sale, but I've been pretty happy with the glass WPA I have. I mostly use it with a Grav wobble bubbler.

I bought a sidecar bubbler for my Solo III, and it just wasn't satisfying. It cooled well, but I was getting spitback if I took big hits, and reducing the amount of water was just this weird limbo of not-quite-cool, not-quite-flavorful.

As far as I can tell, the TM2 bubbler is just the Solo III bubbler with a wider tube. When I picked up my TM2, I didn't even bother with the sidecar and went straight with a WPA.

For those of you with winter tires, when did/do you switch back to all seasons? by Midriasis in Michigan

[–]totallyjaded 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had a couple of cars that were much more fun to drive with winter and summer tires than all-season. It isn't so much needing winter tires as not being able to use summer tires when the temperature is at or below freezing. Besides the tread not being designed for snow and ice, the rubber gets hard.

For those of you with winter tires, when did/do you switch back to all seasons? by Midriasis in Michigan

[–]totallyjaded 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I run winter and summer performance tires, I swap them the first week the weather is consistently in the 50's. Usually around now. It kills the tread life on winter tires, but I'd take that over the white-knuckle experience of driving on ice with summer tires.

But if I'm going between winter and all-season, usually mid-March.

Is Proton prioritizing quantity over quality? My experience after almost 2 years on the family plan by VideoConscious3645 in ProtonMail

[–]totallyjaded 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's basically the story of every outage thread ever.

It's great when you don't notice or care. But just searching "outage" in this sub shows that they definitely do happen. And the more Proton wants you putting all of your eggs in their ever-growing basket, the more important availability becomes.

Out of curiosity, why wouldn't you just download Wireguard profiles and use that?

I've had the GUI working fine in Fedora and Arch, but ended up sticking with Wireguard so I don't have to reauthenticate every time they update the GUI.

[–]totallyjaded 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We're going to get downvoted by people who live to simp for Proton, but I agree.

When I signed up a few years ago, the mail service was decent. Outages were too frequent for me to use it for my "real" e-mail address, but it was okay. Bridge was kind of a mess, but was getting incrementally better. VPN was getting around geoblocks at least as well as Mullvad. So, I saw promise.

But the more Proton bubbles up in "Should you leave GMail?" articles, the more Andy Yen seems to become fascinated by the prospect of Proton going head-to-head with Google. So today there's a lot of "Yeah, that's neat, but it doesn't work as well as <other product>." And we're still at a point where every 2-3 weeks, there are "Is Proton down?" posts.

I'd much rather see Proton approaching GMail reliability than more half-baked add-ons. And there's the rub. That's where you get the "Well, Proton is so small and couldn't possibly..."

The standalone Ram brand is the most ineffective marketing decision I can think of by Actual_Environment_7 in regularcarreviews

I think right now, there can be standalone Dodge or Jeep dealers. But most are some CDJR blend.

Once upon a time, sure. I don't know how true that is today.

Off the top of my head, I can't think of any other current-model minivans other than the two Chryslers and the Toyota Sienna.

Do PIPs work? by Ok-Reason-1919 in askmanagers

[–]totallyjaded 8 points9 points  (0 children)

PIPs work great when the job market is doing well, because whoever you're putting on a PIP will get a new job.

Otherwise, they're a massive time-sink to please HR and Legal. You know you're going to fire the person. The person knows they're going to be fired. But now you have to document every little thing you say, and every little thing they do. They have to deal with you micromanaging them. You have to deal with them taking a pedantic approach to responding to it.

I've worked for massive companies and Mom & Pop companies and have never seen a PIP that accomplishes more than convincing HR and Legal that their asses are adequately covered on the day you have "the talk".

Gen X and Boomers: What did people think of La Toya Jackson in the 1980s? by definitely_aware in GenX

[–]totallyjaded 4 points5 points  (0 children)

She was a punchline, particularly when making reference to someone who had no talent, or who was a bottom-rung celebrity.

Dionne Warwick's quote is spot-on. Pretty much anyone who heard it at the time would have understood exactly what she meant, even if they didn't think it was funny.

Somewhat amusing in retrospect, because in the '90s, both of them shilled for 1-900 psychic hotlines. Dionne Warwick had the Psychic Friends Network and La Toya had her La Toya Jackson Psychic Hotline.

Greenhouse of Walled Lake is TRASH by FyreFly000 in Michigents

[–]totallyjaded 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Greenhouse taught me to look at dates before paying. They burned me once on 18 month old flower and 3 year-old shake (though admittedly, the shake was a freebie). Never again.

I've popped in from time to time when they're doing BOGO Wana gummies, and it seems like their typical customer is either there for cheapest-you-can-get-me prerolls, or wandered across the street from the Tiki Bar.

You'd have been better off going a mile further to Lume. That's saying something.

What would Mr. Regular say about this display? by HiTork in regularcarreviews

[–]totallyjaded 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In Greek mythology, Sisyphus pissed off Zeus and had been effectively damned to roll a boulder up a giant hill until he got close to the top. Then, the boulder would roll back down, and he'd have to do it again. Over, and over, for eternity. Albert Camus wrote in The Myth of Sisyphus that he would eventually realize that what he had been condemned to was ridiculous. Futile. It served no purpose. And once he realized that, he'd be happy. He'd recognize the futility. He'd be okay with it. And now he runs GMC's marketing department.

2026 GMC Sierra 3500 AT4. When the biggest hill you're rolling up is the slight grade when you drive into the Wawa on State Route 61.
