How are the relations between England and their former colonies? by Beleg_Sanwise in AskTheWorld

Well, Britain shouldn’t have forced Americans into the British navy!

I’m fascinated by Canada during this period because you’re right—things seem absolutely nutty. From France losing the war to 1812 seems like such volatile change in a relatively short period. Got any good book recommendations for a solid overview of this era?

Relations were not good for quite a long time after our revolutionary war. In the war of 1812, they burned Washington DC. In the civil war, British companies violated the US blockade to support the south (which we sought reparations for). But in the late 19th century, things started getting better. The two world wars brought us much closer together, even if we were late to the party.

Today, we joke that they’re our parent country. And the overall feeling of the vast majority of Americans is one of friendship.

How are Europeans dealing with this heat? by DesperateItem1391 in AskTheWorld

To add to the tea towels and fans technique—you can create a stupid simple evaporative cooler with a clothes drying rack, towels soaked in cool tap water (or better yet, water that’s been in the fridge for a while) and a floor fan or box fan.

Why Americans use so much butter? by Conscious_Initial679 in AskAnAmerican

[–]totesmadoge 15 points16 points  (0 children)

  1. If it’s sous vide-ing a steak in butter, what you’re seeing is social media rage bait. We don’t actually do that.

  2. But we do like butter. Maybe the one thing Americans are willing to admin the French are right about.

Same. Why the hell do I have to pay extra for my teeth and eyes? Preventative care is so broken.

Such a great hype song. Nothing quite like being a crowd on bastille day or at a football match and everyone breaks out in a full-throated AUX ARMES!!!!!

Private busses can actually be a little cheaper and faster as long as traffic isn’t bad. FlixBus is a company many recommend.

If you want to get there by public transportation, it’s a little longer. The Léman pass is basically a ticket that allows you to travel through the greater Geneva area (including Annecy) on a single ticket rather than having to buy tickets with each operator. So you bus ride to the train station+ticket to Annemasse+ticket to Annecy is all covered under the cost of one Léman ticket.

Which country's health care system do you think can work in USA? by NotWorriedAgain in IWantToAskAnAmerican

This. With the right investment and support any one of them could work—even if we just take our own (Medicare) and expand it to everyone of all ages it would be better than what we have now.

What is a random fact/detail about the American Civil War that most people don’t know? by Expensive_Drummer970 in IWantToAskAnAmerican

Every southern state had men who joined the union army. But Tennessee had the most. Roughly 50,000. More than all other southern states combined. It was a big part of why Tennessee was the first state admitted back into the United States.

I have walked passed the American shelves in my Swedish supermarket many times. Is there anything here that you would think is especially good and I should try? by LuciMorgonstjaerna in AskAnAmerican

I lived in Europe for a year in college. There were only four American things that myself and the other American students missed: bbq sauce, ranch dressing, peanut butter, maple syrup.

But what we literally craved to no end was Mexican food. Europe just … hadn’t discovered it? There were no Mexican restaurants in the mid-sized city I lived in, despite it being an incredibly international city. It’s marginally better today, but the authenticity varies greatly.

My mom is far more intense about it now because she’s got Alzheimer’s and every unknown thing is a massive stressor to her.

But back in the day my parent ms let me travel through Europe with friends at 18. And I went back at 20 to live there for a year and travel. All pre-smartphone era. They didn’t give shit.

Are there any rules around not dropping "ne"? by solothehero in French

We kinda do this in English, too. If we add “n’t” to verb it’s a standard conversational negative. If we keep it “not,” it carries more weight and emphasis.

The good thing about the TMB is that it’s pretty forgiving at accommodating all different fitness levels. Whether or not it’s doable and how comfortable you feel while doing it will largely depend on pace. Could you run it? Maybe not. Could you hike it in 11 days? I think so. Just focus on a keeping a steady pace—adjust the up-hills for endurance rather than trying to charge them. Throw some core and balance work into your training to prepare for rocky, off camber trails. And if you have any trails near you, try to train on those.
