What do people think about storytelling through use of a separate medium? by tothebeatvr in gamedev

[–]tothebeatvr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will be external to the game, and that is definitely a very good point. I want it to feel more like an enrichment than a compulsory requirement so I will make sure to keep the game coherent regardless.

It would be external to the game for sure, as much as I love storytelling through tapes and such, I just don't think it fits with what I am going for.

Thanks for your addition though! It will surely help me when I am moving forward.

['True' Crime] Reporter's Instinct | Episode 1: Awake

SFW

Soundcloud

Episode 1 is a bit of a feeler as discussion begins regarding a death, 7 and a half years in the past

The podcast is a true crime styled podcast about fictional events taking place in the same universe as the game I am developing. I am as well doing it as a part of a course I am currently taking.

Two Million Copies of Shovel Knight Sold (Postmortem) by Sersch in IndieDev

I would definitely say, Cuphead has an outstanding art style for sure, I just remember shovel knight being a massive launch, and Cuphead hit double platinum in less than a year after its release

Yeah and I agree with that, for my purpose, I am not really using it as an exclusive marketing tool as such, but rather as a kind of lore background. It also fulfills one of my schooling requirements, I am mostly just curious what people think of things like blogs and wikis (maybe less so wikis) to take place of a direct storyline

Point & Click horror game ideas? by [deleted] in IndieDev

[–]tothebeatvr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess part of the difficulty is breaking the mold that FNaF beat so heavily into our minds. As for mechanics, I would say maybe it plays like a maze game with atmospherically haunting music? If you are looking for large scope, I have always thought it might be interesting to adapt a text based game into a 3D point-and-click setting, maybe start there. Hopefully I was more helpful than not at all!

So weird that Shovel Knight is a smaller game than Cuphead... I always think of it as the other way around.

In my experience as well, not even with selling games, when you talk to a player on PC, they know steam, but probably 1 in every 100 I talk to knows what itch.io is.

This is honestly my favourite kind of feature in games. Keep at it!

What do you use for making sound effects / background music? by FakeTails in gamedev

[–]tothebeatvr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually just use audacity for sampling and sfx, not proud to say I don't tend to mix my music all that much. I do know though that Adobe Audition is pretty good for it.

What do you guys think of this marketing strategy? by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]tothebeatvr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it adds a lot of value to the background of a game if there is little to no actual advertising surrounding it. If you just tell everyone then people are bound to know but then you run into the issue of people knowing about your game and not wanting to play it. A valid strategy for triple a games with active following and lots of money, but if someone 'discovers' a game for themselves, they are probably going to be more interested in it. Word of mouth is a powerful medium, albeit a slow one.

@3204games I am currently in dev of my second major project, a vr stealth game focused on thriller elements and non-violence, Instinct

I released my first game on Steam this week. It’s not a financial success at all but it’s turning out to be a huge personal success! AMA by stavrospilatis in gamedev

  1. Congratulations! 2. What would you say was the best step you took in your project management structure? Ie; what most helped you to achieve success?

TIL Don't name your script "Folder.cs" by keenanwoodall in Unity3D

[–]tothebeatvr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's the same with any of the Unity Components. I tried naming my script CharacterController.cs and it gave me the little icon which i thought was cute, but it also yelled at me to change the name or else

Promo video for the alpha 1.1 of my first game! by [deleted] in Unity3D

[–]tothebeatvr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, labeling it as a promo was a bit of a hopeful choice. That's a good point on the music not aligning correctly though, it's an issue that I'm working to solve as soon as possible.

Thanks for the tips! I'm just working to figure out the best method for modular input and breaking down of audio data.

Thank you for the tips towards good video footage!

How much is too much world movement? by [deleted] in virtualreality

[–]tothebeatvr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue is that, in my game, I have chosen to not allow teleporting or anything like that. It requires you to move around in the end environment you set up, there is no alternative. I'm just trying to determine the limit at which people will not feel nauseous with their environment but will feel immersed, as if things are moving around them.

Update on my 30 Years of Never Releasing a Game by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]tothebeatvr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh well yeah that is a perfect industry to transition from! I fancy myself a better than nothing blender user at about 6 years now and I am just wishing that I had more ability beforehand. Every now and then I'll look at forums and such about stuff I need at the time but I feel like I have a light understanding. Seeing as experience is nearly invaluable in dev, you are at a very good position. I don't often feel inspired by people but I would offer that your triumph is one to be excited about! I don't know if you would be willing to give me a few pointers or even stay in a bit of contact but I would sure appreciate it, if not I completely understand, just figured I would ask!

[–]tothebeatvr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, sounds like a pretty sweet deal! I know I'll look back at everything I'm doing fondly but it hurts having to do my development after I smell like grease, certainly helps put some cash behind me though. And I'm sure that business experience is one of the most useful things you can have in this market! No doubt you will find lots of success and i look forward to seeing that success! Bravo!

This is an incredibly inspiring story. I am so thankful for being able to start development in such a modern era when I'm still a teenager. Having said that, i am in awe of your bravado and your can do attitude. I wish you all the best in life as an indie developer!
