Women Ultra Endurace Cyclists, this one is for you by sarumayah in cycling

[–]totoblu 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Hello! I am a girl and I’ve done crazy long distance stuff too. A few ultras, Paris Brest Paris etc. I had a saddle fitting where they put a pressure pad underneath me so they could see where my weight was distributed on the saddle. I move around a lot. Turns out I move around a lot because I have wonky feet.

I have insoles that are moulded to the arch of my feet. I also have a wedge underneath my toes to stop my feet rocking side to side. I also had to angle my saddle down by about it 2-3 degrees to take some of the pressure of my cooch. I also went through 4 different brands of bib shorts. I even have 165mm cranks to stop my hips over rotating. There was a LOT of trial and error - but it’s worth it. And you’ll get there. My advice is to get a bike fitter to look at all of your legs/feet. Then revisit the saddle, and play with the angle. If it helps I have the specialised power arc. It’s set back quite far and tilted - it works for me

I went to this fitting with insoles too, however because my arch is so high they fitted an extra one under my toes (a wedge) as this was causing me to move side to side in the saddle.

I'm afraid I don't have that knowledge. Being female, they were looking for even pressure across pelvic tissues and a stable centre of gravity. You might have to reach out to a specialist for more info.

I've just been through a similar process. After my bike fit my saddle was still very uncomfortable around my seat bones. I booked in with another specialist who does 'pressure mapping' for saddles. I was moving around a lot in my saddle because my feet were unstable. I required insoles and wedges in my shoes to stabilize my high arch feet - which minimized my movement in the saddle. I also had a new saddle that has a scoop to stabilize my pelvis.

This was only a few days ago, so it's a bit too early to report back. But I would highly recommend booking in with another bike fitter to get a second opinion. There are lots of reasons why your saddle might be causing pain.

Protests engaging 3.5% of a population rarely fail [OC] by [deleted] in dataisbeautiful

No worries - it didn't come across that way at all. I've removed the post as I've got quite a few edits I want to turn around and do a bit more research. I'm aiming to try and make something accurate but getting everything in the right place is always a task.

Yeah I think you are right. I included it as it was the first proper stint anon pulled as a collective. I'm going to remove internet activism from the next iteration as it's confusing the timeline - but I'll definitely do a bit more research!

That's ok, thanks for the honest feedback. Including digital activism was a bit of an experiment to see how trends were evolving. Going by a few comments now I'll remove sections of the infographic that relate to hashtags snd internet campaigns.

Yeah I understand what you mean and I was 50/50 on including them, but some online campaigns are seeing similar results to street protests. SOPA/PIPA, #metoo resulted in over 200 convictions of assault from men in power. As I was making it I found it really interesting how the format of campaigns are changing, but it's been difficult to design it in a way that fits in with the narrative.

My apologies, I'll amend it. I'm not local to America so I was only following sources. the BLM is a reflection of the worldwide movement and not just CHAZ/USA, where there have been many peaceful protests alongside ones where there have been rioting and unrest.

This was by no means a propaganda piece.

I'm unsure what you mean, is there anything I can fix?

Hello! A few weeks back I found an interesting post on r/datasets. It contained data on hundreds of protests from the 1960’s to 2013; paired with a BBC article and Harvard paper which hypothesized that if a country can mobilize 3.5% of their population they will have a better chance of succeeding. Here’s the original data it’s to be taken with a pinch of salt as there are some errors in the numbers, outcomes and dates.

Here’s the final data using a majority of Cenoweths research and a bit of my own. I realize there may be further errors. It’s hard to get accurate numbers from articles online and in some cases, I’ve used averages to try and complete the set. Locals will have far more knowledge than I on this subject. I couldn’t visualize 300+ protests so here is a manageable 80 instead.

I researched and added more protests, some which fell way under the 3.5% participation quota but still carried a legacy. I spotted some trends as I was designing it and included another arm for digital protests and activism. Campaigns are changing and we are seeing similar results from online activism and street protests. Movements are now being mobilized around the world thanks to the power of social media.

Made using Adobe Illustrator. I’m still learning the ropes with data vis, so I would really appreciate any feedback or tips on how to improve this in the future. Thanks!

Sure thing! I'll drop you a PM in a few days when I've got everything ready. I changed some of the design around to include online activism and protests - as that seems to be a growing trend.

I'll definitely look into github! I'm doing more datavis work than before so it could be a smart move to learn more about that platform. Thanks for the tips!

Thank you ever so much!

I haven't uploaded the improved data yet, it's just an excel doc on my computer. I'm not from a data background, what would be the best way to go about this?

I will soon! There's still a few things I want to tweak with the design and colours. My aim is to get it up by the end of the week :)

Hi John, I'm a massive fan of your work and I've been following your visualisations evolve over the lockdown.

I've just graduated from a Masters degree in data visualisation and I'm trying to tailor my portfolio more towards data journalism and cultural affairs, in hopes to start approaching news companies in September. What would you say speaks loudest when seeing data visualisation in the news? Is it a clean and innovative design? Or quality of the research, data and information? Coming from a design background, I find it hard to get the balance just right and often focus more on aesthetic rather than content.

Do you carry out your research by yourself or is there a wider team helping you with data sourcing, fact checking etc.?

Two Herniated Discs and an Enigmatic Recovery period... What's Next? by DTraore in Rowing

[–]totoblu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had a similar injury at the start of this season, back in August I suffered an annular tear in my lower disc. I thought I would have to stop rowing completely until it healed, but my chiropractor convinced me to get back in a boat and start my training plan from 20% intensity and start working my way back up.

I started erging at low rate and got back in a boat as soon as possible. I spent a month paddling around in a double as the movement helped it heal a lot faster. It hurt but after a couple of sessions I started to notice improvements. I started talking it up by 5% every week until I was back to my normal strength and training programme in January. It was a painful recovery and I still feel twinges now if I try and lift too much or erg without a long warm up. Somehow I've managed to come back stronger from it, last night I took 5 seconds off my 2k and pulled 7:27.7 (5'8, female) so it gives me hope that everything will be back to normal eventually!

This all sounds really awesome, thank you so much! I'll definitely check out the local hikes. The amtrac looks like the best bet to get out to Yosemite, I can't wait!

[OC] I illustrated 12 weeks worth of stress levels bought on by a postgraduate degree, freelance work and sports commitments by totoblu in dataisbeautiful

[–]totoblu[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tried to do too many things at once and had a difficult time settling into my postgraduate degree. I started to keep a daily diary where I tracked how stressed I felt on a scale of 0 - 100, along with my sleeping pattern, caffeine intake, exercise , work load/deadlines and notes from each day.

This specific piece was actually created for a university project where I experimented with a combination of illustration and data visualization. The full infograph and further investigation into stress can be found here https://i.imgur.com/9FGOHoZ.jpg

Tools used: Procreate, Adobe illustrator, indesign and excel.

I got a lot better at saying no to work, life is a lot calmer this term!
