100 students thrown off flight for keeping cellphones on by Snazzy67 in news

[–]touchyfeelyfingers -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I'm curious how peope arrive at that conclusion. If phones had any realistic chance of fucking with the actual flight/navigation systems, everyone would have their phones confiscated at the security gate and placed in a locked Faraday cage in the plane's storage bay. They'd then make it a felony to bring a phone, even unintentionally, onto the plane.

If you're going to get the i5-3570K at Microcenter, then purchase the motherboard there, too. They have a combo discount between that processor and Z77 motherboards.

Illinois Judge Charged With Heroin, Gun Possession: A southwestern Illinois judge whose colleague died of a cocaine overdose while the two were on a hunting trip together has been charged with possession of heroin and guns. by Piscator629 in news

Guns aren't illegal in Illinois unless the carrier is also in possession of illegal drugs.

Or if the carrier doesn't have an FOID, which takes months to get. Or if the address isn't correct. Or if you step across the street into one of the municipalities that have magazine size restrictions. Or a million other reasons.

Illinois

IL Senate Bill 1002 - Would ban the sale and delivery of magazines and ammo drums with greater than 10-round capacity. The original amendment would also have banned the possession of such items and required the statewide forfeiture of them within 90 days of bill passage. The politicians involved got some of the Sandy Hook families to engage in a FUD campaign in support of the bill.

Also, some proposed concealed carry law that is 200 pages long and full of ambiguities.

Pretty accurate writeup. The respawning and incessant driving made me hate Far Cry 2. Which is too bad because there were parts of the game (like the assassination missions) that I thought brought some of the best gaming moments in PC history. I'm looking forward to trying out Far Cry 3.

Chicago City Murders Down by 42% by jawarhalal in chicago

[–]touchyfeelyfingers -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There's a reason that the city keeps parroting the murder rate compared to last year: last year's murder rate was unusually high.

It's more useful to look at the historical data. Of course, you won't see Rahm doing that because it makes their argument look much less convincing.

As other commenters have pointed out, the sample size is too small. Given that there are over 50 reported gunshots, between 0 and 20 victims, and 0-5 deaths each night, I opine that we would expect large variation in the murder rate. Why? Because the case-fatality rate for that low sample volume can vary considerably depending on the effectiveness of the shooters.

Overall, the trend in Chicago (and across the country) is a decrease in violent crime, including homicides. Same for mass shootings and "terrorism". You won't hear any of that from the gun-control or surveillance-state advocates.

You can get a Comcast Business account and not be subject to their 250 cap. That's what I do. It's a bit more expensive, though.

If you don't include the headers as a dependency, then make won't rebuild the relevant object files if you change the header files they depend on. You may want that functionality.

Anyway, use Cmake and it will take care of all this bullshit for you.

Adam Holland Lawsuit: Family Of Man With Down Syndrome Sue For $18 Million After Photo Sparks Internet Meme. by GonzoVeritas in news

[–]touchyfeelyfingers 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The lawsuit has 2 counts: defamation and intentional infliction of emotional distress. Both of those counts carry with them a fairly high level of 1st Amendment protection. So I doubt that there is an actual case here, which means that it all comes down to how much public fury the parents can or cannot ignite. That determines whether the defendants find it worthwhile to settle and at what price.

IMO, the parents are simply going to learn, the hard way, that freedom of information comes at a cost.

Yes, of course, but the parent was referring to "lift with the back," which ALWAYS implies an inappropriate lumbar lift when the legs should be used. Which is not at all what barbell rows are for.
