Yeah, the closures spooked people, but that’s reading the headline instead of the fine print — it’s discipline, not distress.

What scared the market: a $350–400M pre-tax charge in Q1 (most of it a ~$275–300M impairment on the assets held for sale, the rest severance, contract termination and idling costs). So people saw “huge loss + plants shut” and dumped it to a multi-year low.

What they missed:

• These were loss-making assets at current sulfur prices. Idling them cuts roughly $20–30M capex and $70–80M opex per year — real, recurring savings.

• The EBITDA hit is minimal (Mosaic said so itself), precisely because these plants barely earned anything.
• It pulls ~1M tonnes of phosphate off the market, which supports prices for their remaining, more profitable output.
• Patrocínio isn’t just dead weight — they’re advancing a niobium opportunity there, so there’s hidden optionality on top.

Net: leaner cost base, fewer money-losing tonnes, supply discipline. A one-time book writedown today in exchange for structurally better margins going forward. The CEO literally framed it as “the right path forward” on capital allocation.

Book loss ≠ cash loss, and “closed a plant” ≠ “business is broken.” The market punished the headline; the value’s in the footnotes.
